Newspaper Resources
Types of Newspapers
Generally newspapers are divide into two types:Local and National
Local NewspapersLocal papers are based out of smaller cities and towns.
Local newspaper publications will focus primarily on local stories.
National stories may be covered, but could be through a national news agency, such as the Associated Press, or focus on how a national event/happening/trend/etc. impacts the local area.
Local NewspapersNational newspapers are based out of major cities, e.g., New York City or Los Angeles.
National newspaper publications will cover national and world news, as well local news for their city.
National newspapers are often read by people across the country and world.
The contributors will often be a good authority on their discipline and highly credible.
Newspaper DatabasesThe Heritage University Library provides access to three newspaper databases:• Access World News• National Newspapers• Newspaper Source
Access World News (AWN) is a database that contains current issues and archives of 4,000+ publications from across the world.
There are many search filters available, including an interactive map that will allow you to search by location all the way from a continent to a state.
Access World News
Access World NewsAWN offers “Find a Topic,” a helpful feature that can assist you in starting your research if you are having difficulties thinking of a topic.
Located in the upper-right of the landing page, once clicked you will be able to click through topics and sub-topics that will conduct a search for you. You will then be able to filter the results to be relative to your topic.
National Newspapers Core
National Newspapers Core (NNC) is a database provided through ProQuest. There are 12 national publications available through NNC, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.
To search throughspecific issues of
publications, select the “Publications” link
from the landing page.
Newspaper Source
Newspaper Source is a database provided by EBSCO. There is a range of national and international publications, including The Times (UK), The Daily Telegraph (Australia), Toronto Star (Canada), and others.
Articles are not supplied with Subject Headings, so searches will be conducted using keywords.
