Overview of the Heritage Register

• Official list of properties with heritage value • Demonstrate community pride • Allows the City to “flag” properties with heritage

value and monitor alterations to buildings

Listing a property on the Heritage Register does not protect a building from demolition or alteration. This is achieved through higher levels of protection (i.e. Heritage Designation)

Page 4: Heritage Register Updateprincegeorge.ca/.../2017-01-09/documents/PPT_Heritage.pdf · 2019-01-07 · Heritage Conservation Areas ... of their home in 1921. By 1922 Pitman had established

Level of Protection Tool

No Protection

Heritage Inventory • Unofficial list of properties maintained by the Heritage Commission.

Low Heritage Register • Official list of properties with heritage value.

Moderate Heritage Conservation Areas • Buildings must follow specific design criteria to retain heritage features

Higher Heritage Covenants and Agreements • Local governments can negotiate terms of a contractual agreement or

covenant.

Highest Heritage Designation • Requires a Bylaw, Public Hearing and notification on Title.

Heritage Tools (Local Gov’t Act)

How are properties added?

• Council resolution • Statement of Significance (SOS) • Local Government Act requires

that municipalities indicate why a property has heritage value

Property owner’s consent is not required, but the Commission received consent for the proposed additions to the Heritage Register

The locat ion Of the Pitman House is in the prestigious Crescents NeighbOurhOOd Of the city. This neighbourhOOd was formulated in the 1913 Brett & Hall design for t he Grand Trunk Pacific Railway community Of Fort George. The Pitman site is at the north-east corner Of l oth Avenue and McBride Crescent. Due to the curvature of the street, the lots in the Crescent area are pie-shaped, with t he Pitman site having a frontage Of 67 feet, and a lane exp05ure of 54.5 feet.

Herttage Value:

The W J . Pitman family became established in Prince George in 1921 with the const ruction of t heir home in 1921. By 1922 Pitman had established a music and piano store under the family name on 3rd Avenue in Prince George. Family music ta lents made the family well known in the city to the extent that Mr. Pitman was the organist for the Knox United Church OecHcation in 1922, continued as church orga nist for some years. He was also a School Trustee. intermittently, from 1922 to 1933.

The family was also interested in books, and for a few years, 1927 - 193 1, allowed the loca l library to occupy space at the back Of the Pitman Music Store on 3rd Avenue. The library had been in city hall , and Mr. Pitman undertook to check the books in and out at his store as a public service. He also served as city alderman 1940 - 1942.

Up0n ret irement circa 1940, the Pitman Music and Piano business was purchased by B.C. •Bud" Moore and became Moore's Music & Electric company. However. the name Pitman STI ii resonates with our pioneers about t he earty days in Prince George.
