  • 2 The second key experience that led me to Islam was Islamic Art

What I experienced as a blessfully Islamic in so many places in

Lisbons Islamic Gulbenkian Museum, in the Umayad Mosquqe in

Dumascus, in Cairo Ibn Tulun, the ancient mosque of Qayrawan or the

Salimiyah in Ederne is the tangible effect which Islamic harmony, the

Islamic way of life, and the Islamic treatment of space leave on both heart

    and mind.

  • 4The journey in celebrating heritage is ever so evident

in all old and most recent artworks produced by

Raeda Ashour. The architectural elements and

depicted detail reveal a strong and confident

visualization and realization of aesthetic components

known to be prevalent in the Islamic art and

ornamentation. Raeda has found herself when first

inspired by the old Arabian cities with its famous

architectural and aesthetic features. She never got

tired of exploring and researching the subject of what

constitutes Islamic art, its beauty, mystery, philosophy

and aesthetics. She moved from one element to the

other from one theme to another, without getting

enough. She became passionate and obsessed by

the beauty of the area. The more she delved into

the subject, the more she became engrossed in its

details and felt more connected and proud of her own

roots and heritage. Raeda specialized in miniatures,

motifs and Islamic decorative units and adapting

these in a modern interpretation that can be digested

by contemporary tastes, the result of which are

harmonious compositions and a melody of variance

in surface treatment, some were embossed celebrated

with beautiful soft colors that pleases the eye.

Raeda continues her artistic journey in researching

and analyzing different cultures that came across or

lived parallel to Islamic arts and eastern trends and

styles. Her aim is to find aesthetic compositions and

elements that she can be inspired by, emphasize and

reinterpret in her own style that makes her art unique

and distinctive, as well as celebrate the art of these

cultures of different ethnic backgrounds nonetheless

    respected worldwide.

  • 6Readily tackling themes from Islamic art and popular

heritage, Ashour does not confine herself to her

local heritage and explores instead what the Nubian,

Moroccan, Yemeni, Persian, and Indian Horizons have

in hold. She tackles heritage with simple color and

    sophisticated treatment, inspiring herself stylistically

from the vegetal and geometric motifs abundant on

old pottery, walls, balconies throughout the worlds

cities, and her themes often span palm trees, cacti, and

the deserts crossed by caravans, which contributes

to their warmth. Her palette is characterized with

austerity, simplicity, and ethereal depth, which turns

her surfaces into expressive horizons that make use of

    various modern techniques.

This is said in a sense that Ashours work features

photography, soft pastels, and deep manual paper-

carving, and that the disparity of the elements in

question comes against the fact that she has not had

a specialized art education until recently, but on this

matter she explains that her preference of multi-media

comes instinctively, and that it enhances her freedom

in experimentation without abandoning the spirit of

    authentic Arab Art.

Her palette is characterized with austerity, simplicity, and ethereal depth
