Thursday Baskets Hazelnut Basket Bonnie Gale – Norwich, NY 12”H x 9” Dia

The hazelnut basket is made with fine peeled buff willow and is made over a loaned wooden mold. The basket has a small round base (provided) with a foot wale and then staking up. Sets of French randing include middle and top waling, followed by a rod border. A wrapped handle completes the basket. There is a ring of white willow in the middle. Awl, pruning shears, bodkin needed.

Fancy Williamsburg Market Basket Dianne Gleixner- Brookfield, WI 12”W x 18”L x 10”H

Weaving on a Williamsburg style handle, students will weave a filled base, learn chase weaving, triple twining, and stacked weaving while increasing the height of the ends of the basket. This beautiful, large basket is then topped off with a rolled Gretchen border. Some of the border may need to be completed after class time. Spoke weights suggested.

Mondo Candace Katz- Springdale, AR 13”W x 15”L x 11”H

Mondo starts on a walnut stained oval base using basic weaving technique of stop/start. The elements used to create and give Mondo its character are large walnut strips, contrasting dyed reed of your choosing, and rosewood cylinder handles.

This is my most favorite twill yet! The design may look like a double wall, but it’s not! The play in color with the spokes and the weavers create horizontal stripes on the outside of the basket and vertical stripes on the inside. Color choices will be available. Spoke placement and shaping will be emphasized. The rim is lashed with waxed linen. Two swing handles provide easy carrying. Black & White Basket Marlys Sowers– Milo, IA 7”H x 5”Dia

Students will taper dyed black and natural reed staves and weave over a puzzle mold using dyed black and natural hamburg cane. The dyed black rim will be glued on then and topped off with a dyed black lid. The wood is all cherry dyed with India ink. Small packing tool & sharp knife are needed.

Keturah Sandy Atkinson- Lennon, MI 79 ½”H x 35”Dia This woven round basket has notched spoke base with randing and inserted spokes. Beautifully done in triple twine with three color combinations to co-ordinate with collar color. The four strand top braid lays flat creating a pleasant rim on top of the collar, with rolled inside border for a finish. Kit includes collar in selected colors, dyed reeds to match collar, beads, leather, feathers, turtleback shell. $80 Intermediate 6hrs Thursday 9a-3p

Diamond design goes with any decor'. The seat is woven in a double diamond design, and the underside is woven in a checkerboard pattern, so you will be learning two design weaves in one class. This bench was made to fit up to a standard table or the end of a bed, made 18" high the standard height of most chairs.

Bent Branch Sandy Atkinson– Lennon, MI 7+”W x 8+”H , will vary

Woven on a bent branch or branch elbow handle, this ribbed basket is a unique design. Each bent branch handle will be different, no two alike. The handle will be drilled and preset with ribs, ready to weave on. Three point hitch starts the basket woven with leather, then continues into the rib weaving using reed. Color dark brown and natural.

Organize your bathroom or make-up table with this practical basket woven around a durable plastic q-tip and cotton ball lidded container. The basket begins with a small wooden base and skills taught are twining, triple twining, twilling and lattice twined outside rims. The lidded container is removable for easy cleaning.

The uniqueness of this practical caddy is the 3 sided handle which is attached into a wooden slotted base, along with learning how to string beads around the center where the colored spokes are. The basket is all start/stop weaving with a traditional rim. Matching yarn and strings of beads are added as an additional embellishment. Christmas Welcome Door Basket Pat Carothers- Columbus, IN 5”W x 14”H

This Willow Tray can be used as a trivet or a hot plate. A prepared and dried hoop is provided. Two double sets of stakes are placed followed by lines of alternate horizontal weavers. The latter are secured by a row of twining weave all around the inside of the hoop. The sets of stakes are then secured and trimmed. Wendy Jensen first showed this basket to me. Pruning shears, ruler, bodkin are needed.

Paper Strapping Tote Dianne Gleixner – Brookfield, WI 4”W x 10”L x 11”H

Weave with a material that is probably new to everyone! This strong and useful tote basket is woven from a product that is left over from the paper milling process. A herringbone twill base, twill up the sides while changing the width of the weaver and the direction of the twill weave. The rim is lashed with waxed linen thread. Hand strength is required; bring a blunt tip, large eyed tapestry needle clear drying white glue. $75 Intermediate (w/ twill experience) 8hrs Friday 8a-5p

Elegant Purse Bonnie Gale– Norwich, NY 5”W x 10”L x 10”H

This wonderful willow purse does include a leather strap in the fee. The basket is made with the unique Spanish catalan base. An oval hoop is provided into which rods are woven which then become the stakes. After bottom waling, there are a choice of siding weaves including French slewing with two color rods as well as zigzag weave. Quilted Memories Gina Kieft– Rothbury, MI 9”W x 12”L, unframed

This beautiful framed ‘quilt’ is the first in my quilt series and is woven entirely with black ash. The quilt features seven different quilt blocks with sashing between each block. The emphasis in class is to keep the quilt square to fit in the handmade barn wood picture frame. Frame is included with the class. Many color options will be offered. Students will taper dyed and natural reed staves and insert them into a walnut wood base, then weave over a puzzle mold using dyed and natural hamburg cane to create the plaid pattern that they want. This very useful basket starts on an oval ash base and uses dyed hamburg cane, with dyed maple strips to match. With basic weaving techniques used to complete the basket the emphasis will be placed on creating the wrapped and braided handles.

This elegant basket begins with an oval slotted base. Learn triple twining with seagrass lacing it in the center, a continuous twill in color and natural along with actually braiding seagrass for your inside and outside rims. I will share several shaping tips to be sure you achieve this unique shape. The basket is embellished with this adorable burlap flower. Available in a variety of colors

A basic market basket style that has many household uses. The open weave base, round reed stabilizing row and dyed reed accents make it a classic. Cane loop design on basket sides with triple twine and the wrought iron handle are impressive touches. Student may choose from pink or green accent colors.

Toddler Rush Rocker Steve Atkinson – Lennon, MI 15”W x 18”L x 18”H

New size for that growing little boy or girl. Built very sturdy and rocks smooth with security rockers that help prevent rocking too hard. Seat is woven with paper rush, an easy technique that is easily applied to larger chairs later. Rocker comes stained, sealed and ready to weave on.

The hen basket was created to carry the broody hen from farm to farm, where Mrs. Hen was very content to sit for the travels. A rib basket made with 3 hoops, round and flat reeds. A good study in a different rib basket design. This class is taught with concepts of the rib weaving, theory, and facts to rib weaving.

A classic market basket, with a filled-in bottom is so useful. This basic basket has a wooden D-handle, Filled-in base so items will not fall out, base twining, cane lashing, and space-dyed reeds in rust, brown, gold and dark green. A good size, sturdy basket for on the go. A great study of basic techniques.

This unique Top Hat has a thin 9” round base for its brim with holes drilled in a circle for the spokes of your hat basket. Weaving taught is continuous over/under, twining, a simple twill and ending round reed spokes. Included is the white fur, black felt belt, burlap bow, greenery, berries, pine cones and bells. Too cute! Burgundy paint available for purchase.

Tom’s Flower Basket Pat Carothers– Columbus, IN 10”W x 15”L x 12”H

My husband, Tom, is the family gardener. this basket was designed for him to gather or arrange flowers. Techniques: filled bottom, decrease weaving, shaping, and a muffled handle.

Double Wall Tote Basket Dianne Gleixner – Brookfield, WI 7”W x 12 ”L x 14 ”H

Students will begin this large double wall tote with a herringbone twill base, upset half of the spokes to weave the inside wall of the basket, upset the remaining spokes and weave the outside wall. The outside wall features triple twining and chase weaving. Learn how to connect the walls at the rim, and add sturdy leather handles. Slower weavers may not finish during class time. This attractive and large basket is woven on a round wood base and has 2 rosewood handles. Many, many techniques! They include: triple twining, 4 rod, 5-rod and 6-rod wale. Color placement and side embellishments give it appeal. Space dyed reed is used.

Huntington Picnic Basket Sandy Atkinson – Lennon, MI 8”W x 14”L x 11”H Woven on a plastic mold that holds its shape. Accents on outside are the hobnails inserted into the wood base and leather handles. Reinforced round reed spokes, triple twine and space dyed reeds in dark brown, rust and hunter green are woven up the sides with a double braided rim and inside braided lip. This large laundry basket starts with a solid woven base. The double woven three-rod arrows made with smoked reed sets off the side weaving. Learn ascending rows of weaving topped with bushel basket handles for easy carrying. Learn four-rod wale for the outside rim. Finish the basket with base stabilizers for those large loads.

Medium Nesting Bins Sharon Klusmann – Tallmadge, OH 12”W x 13”L x 8”H

These 3 nesting bins have solid woven bases and are completely smoked and dyed reed. Skills taught are start/stop weaving, twining, arrow twining, creating a handle opening, traditional rim and braided handle pulls. Great for storage organizers inside a cubby or standing alone. Pattern includes all 3 sizes. In this class you will weave the Medium Bin with Large and Small bins available for purchase.

Zebra Vase Marlys Sowers– Milo, IA 9 ½”H x 4”Dia

Students will taper dyed tan and brown reed staves and glue them into zebra wood base and weave over a plastic glass mold. They will weave the lazy twill pattern using dyed tan and brown hamburg cane. The turned zebra wood rim will be glued on then topped off with a zebra wood lid. Small packing tool and small sharp scissors will be helpful.

Sweet Pea Candace Katz – Springdale, AR 6 ½”H x 8”Dia

Sweet pea is the 5th addition to the series of baskets that use a round base with holes in place of a slot, this allows for a quick setup and time to work on shaping. The placement of flat reed allows for the embellishment of maple strip to create the arrows. The rim is a 4-rod wale with spokes used as an interest to the rim with braiding inside to complete the basket. Limited color choices. $45 Intermediate 8hrs Saturday 8a-5p

Polish Bread Basket Bonnie Gale – Norwich, NY 2”H x 12” Dia

This basket is made in unpeeled willow and is based on the Polish Tatzca basket design. It is useful on a table to hold bread. Six groups of rods are woven into a hexagon and then the rods are curved around and woven. It is a fun basket to weave! Pruning shears, ruler and bodkin will be helpful.

Really Random Bonnie Gale – Norwich, NY 8”W x 10”L x 9”H

This Really Random Basket is woven in unpeeled willow. It uses the technique of random weave to make a really elegant basket. The basket starts with the making of two hoops that are tied together to create a handle and openings. Random Weave does actually have some “rules” to follow- come and have fun learning them. Naturally colored willows are provided. Pruning shears, ruler and bodkin will be helpful.

4 Point Rag Twill Steve Atkinson – Lennon, MI 15”W x 15”L x 12”H

Our newest in the line of footstools, Brahma Webb is the new weaving material. The webbing is weather resistant, durable, and easy to clean with soap and water. Feels much like treated cowhide leather. Finished seat is beautiful in dark brown, incorporating the 4 point rag twill pattern, intricate design. Wood frame comes stained, varnished and ready to weave on. Bring long shanked tool or knitting needle.

Darlene Collins– Jamestown, OH

Darlene Collins is an avid weaver and has been weaving for over 29 years. She teaches basket weaving for the Greene County Public Library and currently displays and sells her work at the Wayne Township House in Waynesville, OH. Along with basket weaving, Darlene also creates ceramics and enjoys quilting. She keeps busy with her 3 corgis and her devoted husband in Southeast Ohio.

Sandy Atkinson began weaving in 1983 when she was home with her four daughters. She was so hooked, that within a few months she found herself at the library trying to find anything on basket weaving. In 1985 she and her husband Steve opened Atkinson's Country House, where she could teach basket weaving and sell supplies. The success of the business grew into a nationwide mail order company. Steve and Sandy live on a small farm, have eight grandchildren and love to travel in the motor home around the USA to teach.

Steve Atkinson worked for GM for 34 years. He retired in 2000 and joined his wife Sandy at Atkinson's Country House full time. He is in charge of packing and shipping, plus anything else that needs doing. Steve also took up woodcutting and now cuts all the wood work for the shop. Steve took up seat weaving a few years ago and really enjoys coming up with new patterns to weave. He builds all his own seat frames.

Pat Carothers– Columbus, IN

Pat has been weaving for about 25 years and teaching for almost as many. She began as a painter . When Pat discovered basket making, she knew she had found her passion. Pat has been fortunate to be invited to teach locally, at conventions and retreats around the country. Pat is always looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new basket buddies at the Heritage Basket Guild Fall Weave. Stop by and say hello!

Residing in Brookfield, WI, Dianne began weaving baskets in 1987. She enjoys weaving Nantucket style baskets, twills, and anything else with a challenge. She has written over 50 patterns and exhibits her baskets at art and craft shows near her home and online through her Etsy site. Since 2004, Dianne has taught in many states for their local guilds or state organization. In October 2012, one of her baskets won the Viewer’s Choice Award at the Assoc. of Michigan Basketmakers Convention.

Debbie began weaving about 30 years ago at a community education program in Arkansas. She retired from teaching first grade Reading and is now active designing new baskets, traveling, and working with her local guild. She has taught in AR, KS, OK, MO, IL, IN, NC, TX, OH, KY, WI, AL, WV, PA and NE at conventions, guilds and small groups. She also taught on the Basket Weaving Cruise in 2010, 2012 and 2014. She and Candace Katz co-own the business, Bases To Weave.

Candace has been weaving for nineteen years and teaching for thirteen years. Her designs include wood bases woven with reed, maple & cane. She has taught at MBG, LLWB, KBA, NCBA, Stateline, Oklahoma and Kansas weekend weaves. Candace is in partnership with Debbie Hurd in Bases To Weave, a supplier of basket weaving materials and kits. She enjoys meeting new people, visiting with old friends and sharing tips & tricks. For her the journey is all about the love of the weave.

Bonnie Gale has been a professional traditional willow basketmaker and willow artist for the past 30 years. Her baskets are part of the collections at Plimoth Plantation and Mount Vernon. In 1999, she was awarded an Artist's Fellowship from NYFA. Her living willow installations have been featured in Vogue, Vogue Living, House and Garden and Fiber Arts magazines. In 2009, her work was featured in the PBS "Cultivating Life" series and in 2010, she appeared on the Martha Stewart Show.

Marlys began teaching in 1986. She makes many different kinds of Nantucket, Shaker and Appalachian style baskets. She also raises many different kinds of willows and makes rib style, stake and strand style baskets. Since her husband Jeff enjoys working in his woodshop, Marlys can do many baskets woven on molds that Jeff makes with the turned wooden rims, lids, and bases. Marlys believes that creating things with your hands keeps you in touch with the world around you and the things that are really important in one’s life.

I began basket weaving when my youngest son was a year old. Twenty years later, I have over 100 patterns written and have had works published in two basket magazines. I am grateful for the opportunity to teach basketry at different venues in the Mid-West and East Coast. I teach at my local Art’s Council, Council on Aging, scouts and private groups. Registration Information Fall Weave, sponsored by the Heritage Basketry Guild of Dayton, Ohio,

will offer classes in a variety of techniques and materials

Fall Weave is open to the public on Thursday 5-9p, Friday 6-10p and Saturday 8a-1p. Public admission is $2.00 per person with a $2.00 off voucher for next year’s registration. One day registration is $25** or full registration is $35**; either must be received by June 27. Late registration fee is $15. Fill out the registration form, listing your first, second, and third choice of classes. If classes fill up, those registered first will be given first choice of classes.

Payment for your choice of classes should not accompany your registration. Checks for registration and meal tickets should be made payable to Heritage Basketry Guild. Please send self-addressed stamped envelope with your registration.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: Cancel by July 1 and your registration, less $10 processing fee, will be refunded. Cancel after July 1 and you will need to make arrangements to pick up your kits.

Bring basic basketry tools, plus any special tools required for your classes. These would include but are not limited to: pencil, measuring tape, spoke weights, pinchy clothes pins, packing tool, sharp scissors, old towel, bucket, & cable ties.

Refreshments & Meals : A variety of soft drinks and bottled water will be available throughout each day.
