Auction reports

Finding some marbles worth keepingINTEREST in general auction sales, particularly from local private buyers, continues to grow and there were many new faces at John Goodwins latest collective sale held at the Pavilion Room in Ledbury. The sale room was crowded throughout viewing and the best seats were bagged very early on sale day. Lots one and two were cars. The first was a relatively modern Ford Fiesta with good local provenance but with its fair share of bumps and scrapes. This sold at 420 and is believed to have been an 18th birthday present. The second car was a 1936 Ford model Y, an unfinished project, which was towed very precariously into the distance having sold to the trade immediately after the sale at 1,850. Proceedings then moved inside and began with the picture section with top price to an oil by Brian Tovey of the Long Mynd at 400. Other prices included 250 for a rural landscape by a local artist J Noel, 250 for a painted porcelain panel depicting the Malvern Hills and 220 for a water colour of a typical civil war scene entitled The Desperate Defence by Cattermole. The furniture section seems a little brisker than usual with good levels of demand from the trade and private buyers alike. Best price in the furniture section went to a pair of metamorphic occasional tables with tip tops designed also to be used as fire screens. These achieved a hammer price of 1,000 much to the delight of the vendor who thought of them as a pair of plain old bedside tables. Other notable prices in the furniture section included a Georgian secretaire at 500, a round convex mirror which sold at 800, a Victorian pedestal desk at 320 and an unusual Victorian occasional table with beadwork apron which exceeded expectations at 210. Three good quality bar stools achieved a hammer price of 270 and pine was very well received with a pine double wardrobe selling at 360, a pine long case clock at 250 and a dresser at 230. In the miscellaneous section of the sale several lots of textiles were hotly conand, a little later in the sale, phone interest in a set of a lot of miscellaneous china WWI medals awarded to and porcelain including a Major Ingles. Porsche not the favourite item in busy sale roomA SMALL painting by the famed wartime artist John Piper realised 4,800 at the recent antique auction by Nigel Ward and Co in Pontrilas. The 5ins by 7ins watercolour and gouache painting of Tretower Castle, Brecon, was, in spite of its diminutive size, an excellent portrayal of the scene, capturing the soft illumination of moonlight. The work, which was signed and dated 1941, was knocked down after spirited bidding to a purchaser from the south east. Other notable paintings realised as follows: an Alice des Clayes (Canadian/Newlyn School 1890/1968) oil of a village scene with horse and cart 1,200; a Donald H Floyd oil of the River Wye at Brockweir 400; and an unsigned oil of a pastoral scene with two boys and a donkey 260. A number of antiquities were forward. An ancient Etruscan terracotta votive male head finely modelled with veil and beard dating from the 3rd-4th century BC made 3,000. Other antiquities sold as follows: Kashan type copper lustre pottery mug 700; an Amlsah type bronze rhyton although with repairs and reconstructions 580; a Parthian terracottage rhtyon in the form of a three-footed bird 500; a Safavid period 17th century small blue and white candlestick 460; and a Kashan fritward Albarello, circa 12th century, 350. Silver was heavily in demand with a 1915 Mappin and Webb cake basket at 350, a teapot dating from 1909 making 300 and a silver rose bowl 250. In the furniture section, lightwood seemed popular in comparison with darker woods evidenced by the fact that a 17th century oak dresser base made 860 whereas a pine kitchen table realised 650 and an 18th century cricket table made 290. Outside, a Porsche 944 with test to 2012 made only 580 whilst a more sedate mobility Above: The painting by wartime artist John Piper dating from 1941. scooter as new made 480. In the miscellanea section, there was something for everyone a Leica M3 camera making 500, an old Carlo Storioni violin in case dating from 1882 made 380 and a Blackamoor figural lamp 310. But the real surprise was an early Flora childs sewing machine with its original domed metal case which made 1,150.
