STORY
A TRAGIC TURN (CHAPTER 2) (SCENE 1 OF 3)
Bruno's teenage years were spent in Paris, where the boy worked as an apprentice to his grandfather, Xavier, at the family's small perfume shop
in Montmartre. Xavier taught Bruno all that he knew about herbs, flowers, alcohols and chemicals. The two formed a powerful team, creating
many fantastic concoctions. Their partnership came to an unfortunate end however, when Xavier died in a strange explosion in 1981. He was
trying to create an experimental new fragrance called 'Liquid Dynamite' when he accidentally mixed some dangerous chemicals together with
tragic results.
A TRAGIC TURN (CHAPTER 2) (SCENE 2 OF 3)
An article in the Unchained Duck Gazette - July 15th, 1981
Local Perfumer Found Dead on Laboratory Floor
by Pierre LaPlume, perfume correspondent
Xavier Delavigne, a well-known figure in the Parisian quarter of Montmartre, passed away yesterday. He died following a freak explosion in the
laboratory of his perfume shop. He was 76 years old. Xavier lost his parents when he was a child, and never found them again. On the other
hand, he did find a Polish immigrant on the metro, who raised the boy as his own and taught him the art of perfume-making. At the age of 19,
Xavier married his first love, Clairette Marciano. Although he never received a formal education, Delavigne became a talented chemist and
an accomplished perfumer through his hard work and dedication. In 1928, Clairette gave birth to their only son Marc, a jazz musician who now
lives with his wife in San Francisco. In 1933, Xavier opened 'La Parfumerie Xavier Delavigne', which became a favorite amongst locals.
Clairette died a few years later, leaving Xavier a widower. Xavier is survived by his son Marc and his grandsons Bruno and Felix. His shop has
been left to his beloved grandson, Bruno, who shares Xavier's passion for perfumes.

Bruno delivers the eulogy at his grandfather's funeral
Bruno: Xavier will no longer be seen opening his laboratory door.
Xavier will no longer be seen dancing on his laboratory floor.
He will not be sitting down for dinner with us anymore.
Xavier's daily soup will go cold tonight, but our hearts are still filled with warmth. Xavier loved his soup, but what he loved most were his
friends. Perhaps you were his customer, perhaps his grandchild, or perhaps a stranger who just likes to attend funerals, but the fact is, that with
Xavier, everyone felt like his friend. Yes, my grandfather had friends, many friends. And a perfume shop. He will be missed.

STORY
A TRAGIC TURN (CHAPTER 2) (SCENE 1 OF 3)
Bruno's teenage years were spent in Paris, where the boy worked as an apprentice to his grandfather, Xavier, at
the family's small perfume shop in Montmartre. Xavier taught Bruno all that
he knew about herbs, flowers, alcohols and chemicals. The
two formed a powerful team, creating many fantastic concoctions. Theirpartnership came to
an unfortunate end however, when Xavier died in a strange explosion in 1981. He was trying to create
an experimental new fragrance called'Liquid Dynamite' when
he accidentally mixed some dangerous chemicals together with tragic results.

Which of the following terms is a synonym for teenage?
Infant
Adult
Adolescent
'Teenage' is a synonym for 'adolescent', both terms refer a
young person, usually between the ages of 13 to 19 years old.
Senior
Excerpt: Bruno's teenage years were spent in Paris, where the boy
worked as an apprentice to his grandfather, Xavier, in the
laboratory at the family's small perfume shop in Montmartre.
#3
2/3 Correct
'Xavier taught Bruno all that he knew about herbs, flowers, alcohols
and chemicals.'
'Taught' is the past tense form of the verb 'to teach (1)'.
Now let's conjugate this verb in a few sentences:
'Yesterday, my teacher taught (2) me an important lesson on the
merits of wearing pants'.
'I taught have taught (3) English to prisoners for the last seven
years'.
(1) teach: The verb 'to teach' means 'to instruct' or 'give knowledge'.
The text explains that Bruno 'learned the art of perfume making from
his grandfather, Xavier'. Note that a teacher 'teaches' while a student
'learns'. The verb 'to teach' is irregular: teach/taught/taught.
(2) taught: The simple past tense of the verb, 'taught', should be used
here. The term 'yesterday' establishes a precise moment in the past, in
which case the simple past tense of the verb is appropriate. The verb
'to teach' is irregular: teach/taught/taught.
(3) taught: The simple past tense is only used to describe single,
completed actions in the past. Here the phrase 'for the last seven
years' tells us that this action is not yet finished!
(3) have taught: 'Have taught' is the present perfect form of the verb
'to teach' (in the first person). We use the present perfect to describe
actions which started in the past and continue into the present, OR to
describe actions which finished at an unspecified time in the past (I
have finished the report). Here, the phrase 'for the last seven years'
indicates that this action started in the past and continues into the
present.

Choose the TRUE statements from the list below according to the
text you just read.
There may be more than one correct answer, choose all that apply!
Xavier Delavigne died while trying to create a new perfume.
This is a true statement. Xavier died while trying to make a new
fragrance called 'Liquid Dynamite'. In the text we read that
Xavier 'was trying to create an experimental new fragrance
called 'Liquid Dynamite', when he accidentally mixed some
dangerous chemicals together.'
Bruno killed his grandfather while drinking a cup of herbal tea.
Slow down, partner! What's with this violent attitude?! This is the
only statement here which is false. Bruno and Xavier's
partnership endedwhen Xavier died, not because Bruno killed him!
'To kill (someone)' is to end their life, by force or other means.
You did not select: As a young man, Bruno learned from his
grandfather.
This is a true statement. In the text it says that 'Xavier taught
Bruno all that he knew about herbs, flowers, alcohols and
chemicals.' Note the difference between 'teach' and 'learn': the
verb 'to learn' describes the passive act of 'acquiring' knowledge
or information, while 'teaching' describes giving or imparting
information. This indicates that Bruno 'learned' a lot from
Xavier.
Excerpt: Xavier taught Bruno all that he knew about herbs, flowers,
alcohols and chemicals. The two formed a powerful team, creating
many fantastic concoctions.
Their partnership came to an unfortunate end when Xavier died in a
strange explosion in 1981. He was trying to create an experimental
new fragrance called 'Liquid Dynamite', when he accidentally mixed
some dangerous chemicals together.
A TRAGIC TURN (CHAPTER 2) (SCENE 2 OF 3)
An article in the Unchained Duck Gazette - July 15th, 1981
Local Perfumer Found Dead on Laboratory Floor
by Pierre LaPlume, perfume correspondent
Xavier Delavigne, a well-known figure in the Parisian quarter of Montmartre, passed away yesterday. He
died following a freak explosion in the laboratory of his perfume shop. He was 76 years old.
Xavier lost his parents when he was a child, and never found them again. On the other hand, he did find
a Polish immigrant on the metro, who raised the boy as his own and taught him the art of perfume-making. At the
age of 19, Xavier married his first love, Clairette Marciano. Although he never received a formal education,
Delavigne became a talented chemist and an accomplished perfumer through his hard work and dedication. In 1928,
Clairettegave birth to their only son Marc, a jazz musician who now lives with his wife in San Francisco. In 1933,
Xavier opened 'La Parfumerie Xavier Delavigne', which became a favorite amongst locals. Clairette died a
few years later, leaving Xavier a widower. Xavier is survived by his son Marc and his grandsons Bruno and Felix.
His shop has been left to his beloved grandson, Bruno, who shares Xavier's passion for perfumes.

Choose the TRUE statements from the list below.
(There may be more than one correct answer. Choose ALL that
apply.)
Bruno Delavigne inherited his grandfather's shop.
This is a true statement. Xavier shop 'has been left to Bruno'.
This means that Bruno 'inherited' or 'was given' his
grandfather's store, or that he is the new owner of the store. To
'leave (money)' is to pass it on or give it, often after one's death.
Xavier Delavigne survived the explosion in his laboratory.
This is the only statement which is not true. Xavier Delavigne died in
an explosion, he did not 'survive' it, which means 'to live (through
something)'. Xavier 'was survived' by his son and two grandsons,
which means that Xavier's son and grandsons will carry on the family
name, or that they are Xavier's inheritors or heirs.
Xavier Delavigne learned how to make perfumes from a Polish
man.
This is a true statement. In the article, we read that Xavier was
raised by a Polish man (whom he found in the metro) who taught
him 'the art of perfume-making'. The Polish man's name was
Sebastian, and he taught Xavier how to make perfumes. 'Taught'
is the past form of the irregular verb 'to teach'
(teach/taught/taught). Note the difference between the passive act
of 'learning' and the active act of 'teaching'.
Excerpt: He was raised by a Polish immigrant who taught the boy the
art of perfume-making. ...In 1928, Clairette gave birth to their only
son Marc, a jazz musician who now lives with his wife in San
Francisco. ... Xavier is survived by his son Marc and his
grandchildren Bruno and Felix.

'In 1928, Clairette gave birth to their only son Marc, a jazz musician
who now lives with his wife in San Francisco.'
Let's talk about birth, baby! Fill in the blanks below with the
appropriate terms.
(Not all of them were used in the text you just read.)
Today, everyone will sing to me, and I expect to receive many, many
presents, because it is my birthday (1) (anniversary, celebration of the
day a person came into existence).
I was born (2) (past participle of the verb which describes coming to
existence) on August 18th, the same day as Emperor Genghis Khan and
rapper Iceberg Titanic.
(1) birthday: A 'birthday' refers to the date of one's birth! Amazing!
The term can refer both to the date, as well as the celebration. Example:
What are you doing for your birthday this year? In this text, we read
that Clairette 'gave birth' to a son. 'To give birth' describes causing
something or someone to be born: My wife gave birth to a horse
yesterday, OR Karl Mark gave birth to Socialism.
(2) born: 'Born' comes from the verb 'to bear', and is the past tense
form of the verb. This verb is almost exclusively used in the passive
voice, in the past tense form: I was born on December 31st, and my
wife was born two days later. A 'birth' refers literally to the beginning
of someone's life, and figuratively to the beginning of any event.
Example: My entire family was present at the birth of my son. In the
figurative sense: The birth of the Art Nouveau movement was in 1880.

Xavier loved his soup, but what
he loved most were his friends. Perhaps you were his customer, perhaps his grandchild, or perhaps a stranger who
just likes to attend funerals, but the fact is, that with Xavier, everyone felt like his friend. Yes, mygrandfather had
friends, many friends. And a perfume shop. He will be missed.
#7
2/2 Correct
Now we will discuss Xavier's soup. I hope you're hungry!
Xavier loved his soup more than anything else --> False (1).
Xavier ate soup every day --> True (2).
(1) False: This statement is false. Although Xavier loved his soup,
it is not what he loved 'most'. Bruno says that what Xavier 'loved
most', or 'above all', were his friends. Do not confuse 'ate' (a form
of the verb 'to eat') with the verb 'to hate', which means 'to detest'.
(2) True: This is a true statement. Bruno says that 'Xavier's daily
soup will go cold tonight'. The adjective 'daily' describes something
which occurs every day. In this case, Xavier ate soup every day. Do
not confuse 'ate' (a form of the verb 'to eat') with the verb 'to hate',
which means 'to detest'. To say that 'Xavier's soup went cold' is a
metaphorical way of saying that Xavier is dead, since his soup will
literally 'go cold' and not be eaten!

Fill in the blank below with a term you heard in Bruno's speech.
'While I was away, I missed you so much my darling. I counted
the seconds until I could see you again, my sweet sweet honey
baby.'
missed: The verb 'to miss' has several meanings in English,
however in this context, it means to 'remember with affection' or
'to feel the absence' of someone. When Bruno says that his
grandfather Xavier 'will be missed', he means that Xavier's friends
will feel his absence, and that his friends will remember Xavier
fondly. Note that the preterit form (missed) needs to be used, since
the action occurs in the past.

GRAMMAR

Nobody wants ever (1) visits grandmother at the retirement home. It's
sad, because she is so old and lonely. Sometimes she talks to the plants.
The director asks her family to come and see her, but
they not never (2) do.
(1) wants : 'Nobody wants visits grandmother' is grammatically
incorrect. The conjugated verb 'wants' must be followed by an
infinitive verb preceded by 'to': Nobody wants 'to visit' grandmother.
(1) ever: Because 'Nobody' carries the negation of this sentence we use
the affirmative 'ever' to express the negation. 'Ever' is the equivalent of
'never' used in sentences which carry negation.
(2) not: 'They not do' is grammatically incorrect. The word 'not' always
follows the verb (they do not), unless there is both an auxiliary and a
verb (they have not come).
(2) never: Since the negation of the sentence is not already established,
we must add the negative term 'never' to correctly complete the
construction. The phrase 'they never do' expresses that 'they never
come and see grandmother'.

Polly: I don't want to.
Bob: Fine. I guess we should just go back to work then.

expresses the speaker's desire to see what Horatio is doing in the
laboratory.

Philip said that he has gone to was going to dance on his desk if
Kevin got promoted.
has gone to: 'Has gone' is the present perfect form of the verb 'to
go'. The present perfect tense is used to describe an action which
occurred at an unspecified moment in the past. This sentence refers
to a future, conditional event. The sentence becomes grammatically
incorrect if we use 'has gone'.
was going to: This construction is an example of 'reported speech'
(or indirect speech). When reporting something that has been said
in the past (Philip said) the verb in the second clause will use a past
tense verb construction, but may indicate a future event. We can
imagine that, in the past, Philip said 'I am going to dance on my
desk if Kevin gets promoted'. When reporting this, we have to use
verbs in their past tense forms. So 'I'm going to' becomes 'I was
going to', and 'He will' becomes 'He would'.

2/2 Correct
Since (1) he lost his sense of smell, Bruno can no longer stop and
smell the roses. For (2) years, he was ashamed of his handicap, but
eventually he accepted it as a part of his life.
(1) Since: 'Since' establishes a link between a past event and a
current action. Because Bruno lost his sense of smell, he can 'no
longer' smell flowers. 'Since' is used here as a conjunction, indicating
the point in time at which Bruno lost his sense of smell. From the
point in time that Bruno lost his ability to smell, he cannot stop to
smell the roses.
(2) For: The preposition 'for' can be used to indicate a general period
of time that is finished, or the duration which something lasted.
Example: 'For years, for months, for weeks,' etc.
