KOUNTZE MEMORIAL LUTHERAN CHURCH GOOD NEWS Volume 38, Issue 10 November, 2018 Fellow Members of Kountze Memorial, I am pretty sure you all know the familiar Sunday School song: Refrain: I am the church! You are the church! We are the church together! All who follow Jesus, all around the world! Yes, we’re the church together! The church is not a building; the church is not a steeple; the church is not a resting place; the church is a people. I certainly believe that. The church is the people, the people of God gathered together as one around Word and Sacrament. We are the people of God. But we also call the building “the church” and that building is a very important place in our lives. It is where we worship; where we were baptized, conϐirmed, married … and where our funeral will take place. Many of us – myself included – joined Kountze Memorial from other churches. For me, I was baptized, conϐirmed and ordained at Our Saviour’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brooklyn NY; married at St. Mary’s in Sioux Falls, SD. Served (and was a member) at Bethlehem Lutheran, rural Backus, MN; Bethany Lutheran, Viborg, SD; Baltic and East Nidaros Lutheran Churches, Baltic, SD; East Side Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, SD. But now I am a member of Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church. And it is now Here in this Place . . . that I Belong. Most of you have a similar story, with many congregational memberships in your life. But now … you belong here at this place … at Kountze Memorial. Here in this Place . . .I Belong is our theme for our Stewardship Campaign for 2019. We will conduct it on Sundays, November 11 and November 18 (on November 18 we will also celebrate a Day of Thanksgiving). This year’s campaign is three-fold: 1) we will ask for a commitment for the general ministry fund as we do every year; 2) we will ask for a commitment to Kountze Commons, Phase 2 which seeks to address our indebtedness and 3) we will ask you to consider various ways you can serve in the congregation with your time and talents. We ask these three things of each other … because it is here, in this place we call Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church that each of us belongs. We have the privilege and the responsibility to call ourselves the Church. Pastor Olaf Roynesdal Here in this Place . . . I Belong

KOUNTZE MEMORIAL LUTHERAN CHURCH

GOOD NEWSVolume 38, Issue 10 November, 2018

Fellow Members of Kountze Memorial,

I am pretty sure you all know the familiar Sunday School song:

Refrain:I am the church! You are the church!

We are the church together!All who follow Jesus, all around the world!

Yes, we’re the church together!

The church is not a building;the church is not a steeple;

the church is not a resting place;the church is a people.

I certainly believe that. The church is the people, the people of God gathered together as one around Word and Sacrament. We are the people of God.

But we also call the building “the church” and that building is a very important place in our lives. It is where we worship; where we were baptized, con irmed, married … and where our funeral will take place.

Many of us – myself included – joined Kountze Memorial from other churches. For me, I was baptized, con irmed and ordained at Our Saviour’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brooklyn NY; married at St. Mary’s in Sioux Falls, SD. Served (and was a member) at Bethlehem Lutheran, rural Backus, MN;

Bethany Lutheran, Viborg, SD; Baltic and East Nidaros Lutheran Churches, Baltic, SD; East Side Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, SD.

Please consider becoming a Eucharistic Minister. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is one of God’s gifts

to us, His people. Through the Sacrament, we are forgiven, strengthened, and assured of our Lord’s presence now and forever. Because of sickness or other circumstances, if members are unable to participate in the celebration of Holy Communion during regular liturgies, trained volunteers of Kountze Memorial are equipped to visit them in their home and share the Body and Blood of Christ once a month.

Eucharistic Ministers serve as representatives of Kountze Memorial and are a vital connection between the liturgy and our home-bound members. Please join us for a brief training seminar on how you can be part of this very rewarding ministry. Please call the Church of ice to register or email [email protected]

Blessing an Advent Wreath and Christmas Tree In the German and Scandinavian traditions of Christianity, the Advent Wreath and Christmas Tree became important symbols of the Advent and christmas Seasons. These symbols can also be important opportunities for families to pray together; to discuss the Christian message of the season, as well as to share family stories. Blessings and prayers (i.e., devituibs) around the Advent Wreath and Christmas Tree are common and available from many Lutheran resources. Here are two:

Blessing the Advent WreathThe blessing of an Advent Wreath

takes place on the First Sunday of Advent or on the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. All may make the sign of the cross as a parent/ leader says:L Our help is in the name of the

Lord.Response (R) Who made heaven and earth.

Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines 16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read. These readings may be done by the children.

L The Word of the Lord.R Thanks be to God.

With hands joined, a parent/leader says:L Let us pray: Lord our God,

we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R Amen.

Blessing of a Christmas Tree(Whether done on Christmas Eve or

when the tree is put up earlier).With the family gathered, all may make a sign of the cross. A paren leader says:L Let us pray: O

God,who made this holy night [or, if don before Christmas Eve: this holy season shine with the brightness of new light. Bless this tree which we adorn with lights to honor him who comes to enlighten us. Let us see in this tree your beautiful simplicity and humble strength. Let this tree remind us of our responsibility for the care of your good earth. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

You are invited to make a inancial contribution for this annual holiday give away. Your gift can be given through the offering, please designate for the holiday meal bags or through the on-line giving page (https://www.kmlchurch.org).

Thank you for your continued inancial contributions, gifts of food, personal care, garden vegetables and orchard fruits. The Whitshank family lives in Baltimore, MD. The parents are Abby and Red in their seventies, they have four children, two daughters Amanda & Jeannie, one biological son, Denny and an adopted son, Stem. Stem thinks because of aging parents with health problems that he should move in with them to help so Denny thinks he should also move in. Making for con licts to come.
