The Prophet (SAW) explained:‘The middle line is man; the four surrounding lines (the square) is death which encapsulates him and from which there is no escape; the protruding line is his hopes which extend far beyond his life the small cross‐lines on both sides are illnesses and events which transpire 

around him. Each short line is a trial…should he escape from one; another awaits…moreover, death surrounds him from all four sides, however his hopes (the protruding line)still extend 

even beyond death.’ (Fadhaeel Sadaqat)

Islamic Requirements Before Death

•WillAbdullah bin Umar RA narrated, ‘The Prophet (SAW) said, “It is the duty of a Muslim who has anything to bequest not to let 

2 nights pass without writing a will about it” (Buhkari)

Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated ‘The Prophet (SAW) said “Get the fixed amounts (of inheritance) to their people and whatever is 

left if for the closest male relative”’(Muslim)

What to do upon approach of Death• Talqeen (remind the dying person of the Kalimah)

Abu Saeed Al‐Khudri (RA) reportedThe Messenger of Allah said ‘Remind your dying men to recite 

La illah illal Laa’(Muslim)

I testify there is none worthy of worship besides Allah and  I testify that Muhammad SAW is His Servant and Messenger

•Once the Kalimah has been recited do not repeat it•Avoid talking about worldly affairs 

Immediately after the Death carry out the following actions

• Stop Talqeen recital • No other recitation should take place near the Deceased

• Remove any false teeth, glasses etc  • Close the eyes• Close the mouth• Tie the mouth and feet• Remove any Jewelry without harming the body

• Cover the body with a clean cloth

Narrated by Abdullah (RA) The Prophet (SAW) said ‘He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and calls or follows the ways and traditions 

of the days of ignorance is not from us’ (Bukhari)

Narrated by Al Mughira (RA)The Prophet (SAW) said

‘The deceased who is wailed over is tortured for that wailing’ (Bukhari)

Patience is at the first sign of calamity

Who should perform the Ghusl

Items required for Ghusl• Scissors• Disposable gloves• Cotton wool and cotton buds• Lukewarm water (soap, lotus and camphor can be added)

• Clean towels (2 large and a few small towels)• 2 clean sheets, that will cover the entire body preferably dark in colour and thick in material.

• Aprons• Sanitary Towels• 1 Jug• Masking Tape• Dustbin

Ghusl Procedure1. Cut clothes with scissors whilst covering the Aura with a 

sheet from the breasts to ankles2. Massage the stomach in a downward motion, wash and 

wipe the private parts with disposable gloves and cotton wool, under the sheet

3.  Perform Wudhu for the Deceased:FaceArms to elbowsMasah of headFeet to ankles

4. It is permissible to wet some cotton wool and cleanse the teeth, ear lobes and nostrils (then block with cotton wool)

5. Wash hair with Shampoo

6. Tilt the body onto the left side, rub soap on the right side of the body then rinse off suds 

7. Tilt the body onto the right side, rub soap on the left side of the body then rinse off suds  

8. Sit the body up slightly, rub the stomach gently and  rinse and wipe any impurity that may have emerged.

9. Pour camphor water on to the right side from head to toe 

10. Pour camphor on the left side from head to toe11. Remove the cotton wool

Dab the body dry with the towel12. Remove the wet cloth and cover the Aura with the dry cloth, without exposing the Aura

Umme Atiyah (RA) narrated ‘The Prophet (SAW) came to us when we were burying his daughter, and he told us “Wash her with water and with leaves of the lote tree, 3 or 5 times, or more then that if you think fit, and put camphor or something like camphor in the last washing then inform me when you have 

finished.’So when we had finished we informed him, and he gave to us his own under garment saying “Put it 

next to her body”’ (Muslim)

Why this particular sequence?

Shroud/KafanThe shroud for a Female requires 5 pieces of white material. They are:1.  Lifaafah (Large sheet) 63” x 108”2.  Izhaar (Smaller sheet) 99” x 63”3.  Khimaar (Head and Chest scarf) 27” x 54”4.  Qamees (Body Piece) 45” x 108”5.  Khirqa (Chest Wrap) 72” x 54”

Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated that The Prophet (SAW) said “Wear white cloth, for these are your best clothes 

and in shroud your dead in them”(Ahmad, Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi)

Kafan  Method•Place 3 ropes on each part of the bench, top middle and end•Place the Lifaafah (Large Sheet) first•Place the Izhaar (Smaller Sheet) second•The Khimar (Head and Chest Sheet) is then placed at the top end of the bench•The Khirqa (Chest Piece) is then placed on top•Lastly the Qamees (Body Piece) goes with the top layer rolled out•Once the body is washed and shroud ready, the Deceased must be lowered onto the sheets

•Put Camphor/Itr on the Sajdah places (forehead, nose, both palms, both knees and both feet)•Divide the hair into 2 parts and bring forward, so that it comes over the right and left breasts•Cover the head and hair with the Khimar•Begin folding the Kafan sheets, fold the right down first then left, tucking in neatly along the way•Tie the 3 ropes on the ends on hold in place•Remove the sheet covering the body and pull the Qamees down at the same time (ensuring the Aura is not exposed)•Do not put any Quranic Ayahs or Duas on the body

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) The Prophet (SAW) said ‘Hurry up with the dead body for if it was righteous, you are forwarding it to a good thing and if it was otherwise, then you are putting an 

evil thing down your necks’ (Bukhari)

Janazah & Burial

•Janazah Salah will now be prayed on the Deceased

•The Deceased will then be taken for Burial

•Sisters are not allowed to attend the Burial

Gifts for the Deceased

After person passes away, the opportunities that they had in  their lifetime to remember the Almighty Allah, to please Him or perform any virtuous deeds have also left. 

It is indeed a grand favour of Allah that the doors for reward to  a deceased person have not been shut , the channel of Ithaale thawaab (passing on the reward of some act of virtue) has been spared by Almighty Allah. 

According to some commentators of the Quran, this is one of the many specialties granted exclusively to this Ummah. 

Narrated by Aisha (RA)‘A man said to the Prophet (SAW) “My mother died suddenly and I thought that if she had lived she would have given alms. So, if I give alms now on her behalf will she get the reward?” 

The Prophet (SAW) replied in the affirmative.’(Bukhari)

Narrated by Urwa (RA) that Aisha (RA) said’ The Prophet (SAW) in his fatal illness said

“Allah cursed the Jews and Christians because they took the graves of their Prophets as places for 

worship”’(Bukhari)

Seeking Intercession at  the Graves of others

This is clearly a forbidden act, as no one can accept our prayers besides 

Allah Azza Wa Jal

Women Visiting The Grave

In general, women are soft hearted and they tend to cry and lament over the graves, especially if the graves belong to their loved ones. It is for this reason that the Shariah discourages them from visiting the graves. However, if a woman feels that she can control herself and her object is to benefit spiritually, then she shall be permitted to visit the graveyards on condition that she adheres to the Shari’ Hijab. 

Aisha (RA) said: ‘The Prophet (SAW) forbade the visitation of graves then permitted it, and I think he said: “For, truly, they 

remind you of the hereafter.”’(Muslim)

Can a body be moved to a different Country?

Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar (RA)The Prophet (SAW) buried the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud at Mount Uhud, even though the blessed graveyard of Jannat ul 

Baqiy was not very far away. (Bukhari)

A Muslim's body should not be moved from the country that they passed away in.

Some scholars do give permission for bodies to be transported between 2‐48 miles but not entirely different countries.

Narrated by Aisha (RA)The Prophet (SAW) said ‘Don’t abuse the dead, because they 

have reached the destination of what they forwarded’(Bukhari)

Narrated by Umar (RA) The Prophet (SAW) said ‘If four persons testify the piety of any Muslim, Allah will 

grant him paradise.’ We asked ‘If three people testify his piety?’ 

He replied ‘Even three’ Then we asked ‘If two?’ He replied ‘Even two’. 

We did not ask regarding one witness.’(Bukhari)

Remember to speak good of the Deceased

Flowers On The Grave 

• Placing flowers on graves has no basis in Shari'ah. This is the practice of non‐believers to express their gratitude to their Deceased. It is an unnecessary waste of money that does not benefit the Deceased. 

• One should rather spend money in charity on behalf of the deceased, or do Ibadah on behalf of the Deceased and ask Allah Ta'ala to send the reward to them. These acts will be rewarding and beneficial for ourselves and loved ones.
