    HERBAL MATERIA MEDICAfifth edition

by MICHAEL MOOREA brief outline of major medicinal plants, giving

preferred media, strengths, and common dosage rangesCopyrigh t 1995 by Michael Moore

    FORMAT EXPLANATION

    * LATIN NAME. These plants are not ap propriate in pregnancy , either because

of their effect on the u terus or the hyp othalamus/ pituitary axis, their toxicpotential, or my ow n conservative attitud e about herbs in p regnancy. Severalp lants, such as Podophyllum, may actually cause birth defects.

LATIN NAME . These plants are potentially toxic , or are only safe in smalldosages

LATIN NAME. This is the primary listing, and reflects a combination of extant, older pharmaceutical, and recent Latin. Leptandra is Veronicastrum in current

botany, but the first name still is widely used by herbalists and is how I list ithere. Many p lants are listed simp ly by genus (such as Arnica) because I feel somany species are the equivalent of the official one or are so singular that I onlyuse one name to define them. Others are carefully specified by species becauseof d istinctly d ifferent aspects between them. Tarragon and Sagebru sh are bothArtemisias but I wou ld hate to taste Sagebrush Chicken.

OTHER NAMES. Other Latin and comm on nam es, indexed at the end.

PARTS USED.These are listed in UPPER CASE. The herb is p resum ed to be

used d ry. All fresh p lant uses are specified. An Infusion or Decoction is alwayspresum ed to be from a d ry botanical.

PREFERENCES: Under each plant part, I list each method of use in thedescend ing order of their value. Some herbs are better used as an infusion, and Ilist that first. I list fresh tincture ahead of dry tinctures most of the time (if bothforms are app ropriate for the herb) based on my own experience, althou gh theymay not always be available in commerce. My preferences also tilt toward sthose method s of using h erbs that makes the greatest use of the least amount of p lant mass. I have gathered many of these plants and have developedpreferences about their use. When you have picked or grown your herbs, youqu ickly learn how to get the most from the least. Some botanicals are onlyavailable in commerce, and I rely on the many sources for extraction principles:older Pharm acopaeas, Formularies and Dispensatories. For plants never listed ,their constituents usually give clear indications for solubilities and media.

Whenever in d oubt, I have followed my ow n inclinations or the observations of the best plant p harm acist of the mod ern era, John Uri Lloyd.

DOSAGE: These are all given for ADULTS; give kids simple stu ff. Beconservative with older folks, the chronically ill, and nu rsing moth ers. Alwayshonor the basic premise of using herbal medicines; they work best on acute self-limiting p roblems and subacute or su b-clinical d isease.I have also been free with warnings, contra- indications and observations . Ihave used and picked most of these plants and when I haven't, I have gone bythe book.

STATUS OF PLANT: Since many plants are under environmental or gatheringstress, I have add ed th is to the format. I have tried to view th is globally. Bear inmind that even such a widely dispersed genus as Arnica will have some sp eciesor varieties that are endangered .

    W/A (wildcrafted and abundant)

W/LA (wildcrafted and locally abu nd ant in one biosphere or global area)

W/Rare (wildcrafted or p oached and rare; use alternatives when possible)

    W/C (wildcrafted and cultivated)

    C (cultivated), and finally

    U (unkn own...at least to m e)

    OUTLINE OF PREPARATION METHODS

    COLD INFUSION

After pre-moistening a bit, wrap one part herb (dry weight) in cloth and suspendit in 32 parts of water (by volum e) at room temp eratu re, overn ight. Squeeze outthe herb into the tea in the morn ing, and add enough w ater to bring it back to 32parts.

STANDARD INFUSIONBoil 32 parts of water, remove from heat, and steep one part (by weight) of theherb in the water for 20-30 minu tes. Strain, and pour sufficient water throughthe herb in the strainer to retu rn th e volum e of tea to 32 parts.

STRONG DECOCTIONCombine 32 parts of water with one part of herb (by weight), bring slowly to aboil, continue for ten minu tes, cool until warm , and strain. Pour add itional waterthrou gh the herb to return the volum e to 32.

A WEAK DECOCTION is the same, but using half as much herb in thesame volum e of water.

COMMENTS. Except for the weak decoction, the above teas end up with anounce having the constituents of a gram of herb. If the dosage recommends 4ounces of Strong Decoction, and you only want a single batch, use 4 grams ofherb, or divide an ounce of herb into eight equal parts and use one part for thetea. (Yes, they aren't quite equal...4 grams and an eighth of an ounce...but theseare HERBS...lighten up already).

DO NOT MAKE MORE THAN A DAY'S WORTH OF TEA AT ONE TIME.

EYEWASH and DOUCHEMake an isotonic water by add ing a slightly rou nd ed teaspoon of salt to a quartof clean w ater (1/ 2 teaspoon per pint, 1/ 4 teaspoon per cup ), and make the teawith this solu tion as per the recomm ended strength. Make a fresh batch every5-6 hou rs.

FRESH PLANT TINCTUREOne part by weight of the fresh, chopped herb is steeped for 7-10 days in twoparts by volume of grain alcohol (190 proof or 95% ethanol), and pressed orsqueezed out. There is no reason to blend or shake this maceration; the tinctureis formed passively as a result of dehyd ration. Ethanol d raws ou t all plant

constituents that contain w ater, leaving only cellulose and dead tissue behind .

    DRY PLANT TINCTUREMaceration.

If the Materia Medica calls for a [1:5, 60% alcohol] tincture, it means this:you r solvent is 60% alcohol and 40% water (the water is presum ed), and one partof herb by weight has been invested in five parts of solvent by volume. Let merun you throu gh one. You h ave four ou nces of d ried Blue Cohosh roots, which

you then grind and sift dow n to a fairly consistent coarse powd er. The fourounces (1) must be mixed with 20 ounces of solvent (5). The solvent is 60%alcohol, the rest water , so you mix 12 ounces of ethanol and 8 ounces of water toget the final volume. Mix both together in a closed jar, and shake the mixture upfor a couple of minu tes twice a day. After 10-14 days of th is, let it set anoth erday, pour off the clear tincture from the top, and squeeze as much out of thesediment as you r press or wr ists allow. The 20 ounces of solvent (calledmenstruum) and 4 ounces of herb, may yield up 13-14 ounces of tincture (bywrist) and up to 17 oun ces (by p ress); the rest is immutably held in the sediment(called m arc). This remnan t moisture is fu ll strength tinctu re, and eventu ally thisknow ledge drives one out of four herbalists stark raving nu ts. The resultantattempts to constantly upgrade hydraulic presses rivals the feeding frenzy atcomp uter hard ware conventions.

    DRY PLANT TINCTUREPercolation.

This is a method that needs physical demonstration and hands-on practice. That being said , this is a brief run d own of the process. The same Blue Cohoshhas been freshly ground as before. Pack it into a measur ing cup to check itscomp ressed volum e...p robably about six oun ces. The menstru um will need tobe the 20 ounces PLUS the 6 oun ce volum e the ground d ry herb takes up . Theprop ortion is the same; 60% alcohol and 40% water. 60% of 26 ounces is 15.6flu id ou nces (the alcohol), 40% is 10.4 (water). This gives you you r 26 ounces of 60:40 menstruum. Place the powdered herb in a little mixing bowl with a top,add about two-third s as mu ch menstruu m as the herb took up in volum e. Ittook up six ounces in volume, so add four oun ces of menstruu m to the herb, andmix it thoroughly, then cover it. This may be confusing; the herb WEIGHS 4ounces, bu t FILLS 6 ounces of volume. The reason for checking its VOLUME willbecome app arent. Anyw ay, the menstruu m-moistened herb needs to staycovered and d igesting for at least 12, p referably 24 hou rs.

Now you will need a percolating cone...d idn't I mention that? Me and m ystudents find that a large Perrier bottle with its bottom removed sits upside-down inside a large-mouthed Mason jar very nicely, and the screw cap can be

used to control the rate of d rip out of the bottom (former top). Anyw ay, youwill need to p lace some m oistened herb inside a coffee filter cone, slide it into theneck of the cone, and gradually add the moistened herb on top. It needs to becompressed and compacted onto the first batch, until you have an evenlyd istributed column of herb inside the cone. Place a filter on the level herb-colum n, and p our some menstruum slowly on top. The menstruu m shoulddescent evenly down the herb column, and drip from the bottom at about oned rip per second . If it never d rips out the bottom, you packed too tight. If it d ripstoo qu ickly (drools is a better word ), lift the cone out of the Mason jar, and screwthe cap on until the drool becomes a slow d rip. Keep fresh menstruum coveringthe top of the herb un til it all drips throu gh. This can take one or two hours (ormore).

When it has finished , there will be 20 ounces of tincture in th e Mason jar, andthe last six ounces of menstruum (virtually inert) will stay in the herb column, like a moist sponge. Toss it. Now you see why you need to measure the dryherb volume; you make just enough menstruum for that batch of tincture, and

you won't have little jars with left-over excess menstruums that are impossibleto comp ute into another batch w ith d ifferent prop ortions. Every Pharm acist hasa copy of Remington's Pharmaceutical Sciences, which describes the process ingreat detail, and exp lains w hy you get better tinctures when p ercolating.

FLUIDEXTRACTBriefly, take 8 ounces of Tabebuia (Pau D'Arco), grind it, make up an arbitraryamount of menstru um (let's say four times as much, or 32 ounces). The tincturelists a 50% strength; make your fluidextract menstruum 20% higher in alcoholconten t (i.e. 70%). Mix 22.4 ounces of alcohol with 9.6 ounces of water to get aqu art of 70% alcohol menstruum. Take the Tabebu ia, moisten it, d igest it forTWO days, pack a larger cone with it, and drip (very slowly) a first batch of tincture that is only 75% of the volum e as the original dry herb weighed. Thismeans after you have d ripped 6 fluid ounces, take it away, and continue d ripp ingeveryth ing else into a second jar. As the rest of the menstru um finally starts tosink below the top of the herb colum n, start add ing water into the cone. Thissecond d rip can be any amount you w ish...a quart, two quarts, whatever. Youwill need to evap orate it all in a d ouble boiler un til it is reduced to 25% in volum eof the herb w eight...2 ounces in this case. Add th e vile remnan t of the secondpercolation to the 6 ounces from the first percolation, and you now have 8ounces of fluidextract, mad e from 8 ounces of Tabebuia Bark. A Fluidextract isby definition 1:1 in strength. Now clean up.
