FEIGENBAUM Dept. of Computer Science Stanford University STANFORD - CA 94305 U.S. A Dear Professor Feigenbaum, in the coming month of May, from the Ist to the 11th, two important scientific events will take place in Italy in honour of Alfred Nobel and Galileo Galilei. These celebrations are meant to show the importance of Science for peaceful research. The Nobel celebrations will be held in San Remo on the Italian Riviera and the Galilei celebrations in Rome. The Nobel celebrations will consist of five parallel Symposia on Physical and Life Sciences. More precisely one of the Physical Science Symposia will be devoted to "Progress in Modern Seismology", the other to "Nuclear Physics for Peace". The Life Science Symposia will be focused on the following topics: "The human brain", "Progress in Cancer Research", "New frontiers at the crossing of Life and Physical Sciences". These International Scientific Symposia are meant to celebrate the 150 th anniversary of the birth of Alfred Nobel. The celebrations are under the patronage of H.E. the President of the Italian Republic and of H.M. the King of Sweden, under the sponsorship of the Nobel Foundation of Stockholm and of other scientific and cultural Institutions of Italy and Europe. celebrations will take place in San Remo, because in this town Alfred Nobelspent the last six years of hif life. The Municipality of San Remo and theDepartment of Imperia, in collaboration with the Nobel Foundation ofStockholm, have decided to honour the memory of this exceptional anddevoted honorary citizen. The Nobel celebrations will close on the 7th ofMay with a formal ceremony with the presence of H.M. the King of Swedenand of H.E. the President of the Italian Republic, starting at 10.30 a.m. at

the Theatro dell'Opera in San Remo.

The solemn opening of the Galilei celebrations will start in Rome in

the Vatican at the Sala Regia on 9th May, 10.30 a.m. with the presence ofH.H. the Pope 3ohn Paul II and of H.E. the President of the Italian Republic.This Symposium will be on "Galilean Science Today" and will mainly bedevoted to the most important discoveries of modern Science. It will end on

the evening of the 1 0th.

I would like to invite you to attend all these events and therefore to

arrive at San Remo on May Ist, to leave San Remo on the Bth of May forRome. You can leave Rome on the May 11th.

In case you cannot stay in Italy for such a long period of time, youcan choose the dates according to which Symposium interests you the most.
