2019 Newsletter

What a crazy winter it has been this year. Whether it has been the snow, wind, or freezing rain, we have seen it all. Like many of you, everyone here is looking forward to March. The month of March brings the end of winter and the start of spring. We are all looking forward to spring this year.

In fact, this spring we hope that our Burger athletes are able to practice and play on the new sports field that was put in last year. This is welcome news for our school and community as we will go from having one full-size field to two full-size fields. This will allow both the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams in the spring to practice and play right here at their home school. In past years, our athletes have had to travel to Roth every day to practice and play. By adding this second field, many of our students will be able to stay on our campus and take advantage of the after school time to get additional academic help or participate in our athletic study hall program. It is a win-win situation for our students.

Next month, (April 2 and 3) our students in grades seven and eight will be asked to participate in the New York State English Language Arts Assessments. In recent years, about one out of four students at Burger have opted out of the New York State Assessment. However, last year we saw the number of students refusing to take the test drop even lower. Four out of five of our seventh and eighth graders took the NYS assessments last year. It is our hope that those of you that have opted your student out in past years, might reconsider this year. We would love to see more and more of our students participate in the assessment. The data we glean from the NYS assessments not only helps us evaluate our programs, it also helps us meet individual needs for students.

This year, students at Burger will be participating in Computer Based Testing (CBT) for the ELA assessment only. To help our students make this transition from traditional pen and paper testing to CBT, we will be participating in a statewide practice day on March 5. On that date, all seventh and eighth graders will have an opportunity to spend about 40 minutes using the new tools and learning the interface that will be used for all online testing across the state on April 2 and 3, 2019. We will require all students to participate in this practice session. The objective of the practice session is not about taking the actual assessment, but rather the opportunity for students to learn how to better navigate online testing. Like it or not, computer based testing will be an important part of our students’ educational program in the future. Many of the NYS Regents exams have already gone to the CBT model, and the ACT and SAT tests have also gone to computer based models as well. This will be the wave of the future for students in the 21st century, so we are happy to support their success in this area.

If you should have any questions about the upcoming NYS assessments or anything else related to Burger, don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your support.

Take care,

Greg Lane Principal

News from the Health Office Spring Sports Are Almost Here!!

March 4 - All JV/Varsity Sports March 25 - All Mod A and Mod B Sports

What Do I Need To Be Cleared for Sports?

Students: Here’s what you need to do to be cleared for sports:

Physicals - Each student who participates in sports must have a complete physical exam signed by a licensed practitioner dated within one year of the beginning of the sport on file in the health office. A physical is good for 12 months through the last day of the month in which it was completed.

Interval Health History - This form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian prior to the first day of practice for all sports. ALL information is required to be completed, please do not leave any blanks as this may delay the process to clear your child for a sport. An Interval Health History form is required for EACH sport your child plays.

If your child has any medical conditions, please follow the steps below.

If your child has asthma, the additional following forms are required prior to sports clearance:

Permission for the use of medications signed by a licensed practitioner on file inthe health office. If your physician determines your child is responsible to self-medicate,it is the responsibility of the student to have their medication with them at all times. Ifyour physician does not determine your child responsible to self-medicate, it is theresponsibility of the parent to supply the coach with the medication. Medications cannotbe taken from the health office and used for sports.

An Asthma Action Plan signed by a licensed practitioner on file in the health office.

If your child has a life threatening allergy requiring medications, the additional following forms are required prior to sports clearance:

Permission for the use of Medications signed by a licensed practitioner on file in thehealth office. If your physician determines your child is responsible to self-medicate, it isthe responsibility of the student to have their medication with them at all times. If yourphysician does not determine your child responsible to self-medicate, it is theresponsibility of the parent to supply the coach with the emergency medication.Medications cannot be taken from the health office and used for sports.

An updated Emergency Care Plan

If your child sustained an injury or had an extended illness prior to the beginning of the sport, the following additional information is required:

An updated physician clearance is required stating the date the student may resumenormal physical activities and sports.

A tetanus vaccine is required every 10 years for each student playing interscholastic sports. Please make every effort to provide the health office with all paperwork, preferably two weeks in advance of the sport, to avoid any delays in participation.

Breakfast is not only for athletes!

Remember breakfast is the key to the day! Eating a good breakfast really does make a difference. Something as simple as eating breakfast can significantly improve your child’s academic performance and psychological well-being. If your child misses breakfast at home, our cafeteria serves breakfast from 6:45 - 7:15 a.m. Please encourage your student to have

breakfast every morning. It will make your child’s school day healthier and more productive!
