More than150 years of Craftsmanship

Acorn tools are world renowned and have been made by Henry Taylor since 1834, combining the traditional pride and skillsof those far off days with the aids of modern technology. Only the best quality Sheffield steel is used, coupled with advancedheat treatment, to ensure that the finest of cutting edges is not only achieved but also maintained.

Many of the lower quality tools produced elsewhere are made under drop stamps or presses but Henry Taylor believe thatonly the hand forging method used by the Acorn craftsmen can produce the correctly shaped blade, with the bestmetallurgical qualities.

Only Henry Taylor s unique combination of traditional skill, individualised production, Sheffield s best steel, overlaid withthe necessary technology, can produce the wide variety of tools with the precision of form and excellence of cutting edgedemanded by skilled woodcarvers throughout the World.

Diamic brand woodturning tools have been produced in Sheffield by skilledcraftsmen, from the finest steel for more than one hundred and fifty years. Themanufacture of these tools marries traditional hand crafting and forging skillswith modern heat treatment and finishing techniques to give the quality ofdesign, finish and edge retaining properties demanded by woodturners of today.Stringent control ensures that the best Sheffield steel is selected. Each tool iscarefully forged, correctly hardened and tempered, then hardness- tested toguarantee edge retention.

Many tools unique to Henry Taylor have been designed in co-operation withsome of the worlds leading woodturners e.g. Roy Child, Dale & Darrel Nish,Richard Raffan, Rude Osolnik, Kip Christensen, Bonnie Klein, Ray Key andRudolph Dercks.

Straight ToolsThese tools are straight along the length of the blade but vary from flat across the

blade up through very shallow sections to deep V shapes.

ChiselsThe first tools in the range are 2411 amateur and 3701 professional, which somewhat

resemble an ordinary straight chisel but with rounded bevel on each side of the cutting

edge. The second tools in the range are 2412 amateur and 3702 professional, which

are the same as 2411 and 3701 except that the cutting edge is skewed to facilitate

cutting into very sharp corners. Available in product numbers: Straight 3701 and 2411Skew 3702 and 2412

GougesThe first gouges listed are the 2413 and 3703 which exhibit a very shallow curve

across the blade and so on to 2421 and 3711 which have a very deep U section. All of

these tools with a curve or U across the blade are called gouges, they are the most

used carving tools and are suitable for heavy stock removal with the wider tools

having the advantage of not splitting the wood along the grain as would a flat chisel,

or for cutting grooves or C cuts when used vertically. Gouges are available for both

amateur and professional, up to 11/2" wide in the shallower sections and 11/2" wide in

the medium and deeper shapes. Available in product numbers: 3703 to 3711 and 2413to 2421 inc.

Parting ToolsThese are straight tools exactly as the previous category. but are V shaped in section.

Three different angles of V are available in both amateur and professional ranges up

to 3/4" wide in the deepest V , 3/4" in the medium and 1" in the shallowest.

Additionally the winged parting tool - a very shallow V with curved sides in the

professional style only is available. and is used mainly for cutting V grooves,

outlining letterwork etc. Available in product numbers: 3745, 3739, 3741, 2455, 2449,2451 and 3747

VeinersVeiners are deep narrow gouges which are used for fine lines, lettering, detail, etc.

Available in product number 3748 up to 11/2".

Bent or Curved ToolsThese tools are exactly the same as the straight tools except that they are curved along

the length to facilitate cutting in recesses, inside bowls and curves, etc. All are

available in both professional and amateur ranges of sections and widths except that

the two straight cross section chisels (i.e. square and skew ends) are not made in the

form. Available in product numbers: 3712 to 3720 inclusive and 3746, 3740, 3742.2422 to 2430 inclusive and 2456, 2450, 2452.

Amateur & ProfessionalHenry Taylor Tools produce many different shapes and sizes of carving chisels, many of these being made in two

basically differing styles, which is, perhaps, currently the most extensive range available. Professional or Workmen s

tools are longer (blade length 4 3/4" [119mm]) with uniform black non-reflective finish, except on the insides which

have a straw coloured ground surface.

Amateur or Ladies tools by comparison are shorter (blade length 3 1/2" [88mm]) and are bright ground all over and

finished straw colour. The only difference between the two styles are finish and length, otherwise the quality and

shapes are identical. However, the professional range is more extensive. Professional tools are traditionally selected by

the experienced carver, particularly for heavier work and being longer can be repeatedly sharpened. Amateur tools

being shorter are, perhaps, more easily controlled by the less skilled or by the smaller hand and possess all the inherent

qualities of the professional tools. The Henry Taylor identification system uses four digit numbers and the professional

tools commence with 37.., and the amateur 24... Fishtail tools are available only in the professional length, prefix 50...

Spoon Bit and Spoon Bent ToolsThese tools are specifically designed for carving in the awkward spots, generally inside tight curves

i.e. concave surfaces. The general appearance of these tools is rather like a spoon with the tool form

being confined to a short spoon-bowl like curved or bent area on the end of the shank. Both amateur

and professional types are available in the spoonbit form in the full range of sections and widths,

except the shallow V form. Due to the curvature of the bowl end of the tool it is necessary to

offer the skew chisels in both left and right handed forms.

RH: 2432 Amateur 3722 Professional LH: 2433 Amateur 3723 Professional

Also: 3721, 3724 to 3732 inc, 3743 and 3744, 2431, 2434 to 2442 inc, 2452, 2454.

Back Bent ToolsVery similar to the spoon bit type except that the bowl end of the tool is reversed (upside down).

Available for both the amateur and professional in the full range of sizes but only in the shallower

sections. Available in product numbers: 3733 3738 and 2443 to 2448 inclusive

Fishtail ToolsThese tools are longitudinally straight and have a straight shank which widens out progressively to

the cutting edge resembling a fish s tail. Made only in the professional form, but the full range of

straight and gouge sections up to 1". V s are not available. The particular benefit of these tools is

that, mainly in the larger sizes, the shank does not interfere when cutting deeper areas in the carving

and visibility is improved. Available in product numbers: 5001 to 5011 inclusive

Long Pod ToolsSimilar in principle to the fishtails but the cutting form is taken further back down the shank and they

are available in all sections except the V and only up to 1" wide. The advantages and uses of these

tools essentially is similar to the fishtails and they are only made in the professional style. Available

in product numbers: 3761 to 3771 inclusive.

Allongee ToolsAgain somewhat similar to the fishtails and long pod tools except there is no parallel shank at all -

the cutting form tapering back to the bolster. These tools are very robust and have the advantage of

good visibility around the tool and the ability to cut without damaging the foreground. Available only

in the professional style and in the straight, shallow and medium gouge sections, but up to 2" wide.

These are the tools for heavy work. Available in product numbers: 3791 to 3799 inclusive

SKEW GOUGESA new generation of woodcarving toolsFred Cogelow has gained a considerable reputation in North America over the last decade, having won more best of

show awards in recent years than any other carver. Our first introduction to Fred was at the Davenport Congress in 1982

when his carving Hunts the Crying Bear won the Henry Taylor $5000 best of show award. Since that time we have

maintained friendly and regular contact with him. Combining his years of experience and natural talent for woodcarving

together with his broad knowledge of engineering, Fred has innovated a range of carving tools which offer the decreased

resistance of the skew (the same principal as that of the guillotine) in combination with the

control and contouring capabilities of the gouge. In addition, a variety of new bends and

lengths allow greater accessibility and greatly improved ergonomic performance.

The tools have been selected for production based on their individual merits and suitability

to a wide variety of carving products and styles.

Michael recommends two sets of three and six professional woodcarving tools for the

beginner who needs an introduction to their first choice of Carving Tools. Both of these

combinations will provide a variety of cuts for the small and medium sized projects

together with the knowledge that they have chosen a good foundation for a growing tool

kit.

AccessoriesAdzes These tools have been developed following extensive research and study into

the many traditional styles and museum pieces available. They are intended

for single handed use and remove wood at a fantastic rate - ideal for roughing

out, particularly on large carvings. The two patterns are identical except that

one has a blade with a straight cutting edge whereas the other is a gouge adze

which is curved across the blade. In each case: Handle (shaft) length: 10 1/2" (25cms)

blade length: 7" (17.5cms) width of blade: 2" (5cms) weight: 2lbs (0.91kg)

Mallets Traditionally wood carving mallets are always of wood and with a round head,

giving the excellence of balance required for continuous use without undue

fatigue and offering a large working surface to reduce wear.

Only wooden mallets should be used with carving tools.

Mallets have ash handles and a 3 1/2" Beech head.

Chip KnivesEssential equipment for whittling but also indispensable for

all carving whether for stop cutting or fine detail. These fine quality

Knives are also ideal for cutting mounts for photos or artwork.

Cutting abrasive woods at high speed concentrates a lot of wear at one small spot on the tool’s cutting

edge and the edge can get very hot. In these conditions carbon steel tools

soften and dull very quickly and require repeated grinding to maintain a sharp edge.

High speed steels which are more expensive have been developed over many years for

cutting tools that must resist abrasion and the high edge temperatures caused by

friction. A sharpened edge on a high speed steel turning tool will last many times

longer than its equivalent in carbon steel, thus far less time is wasted in

regrinding and the life of the tool is prolonged. Also the heat resistant nature

of high speed steel reduces the danger of accidentally drawing the temper

of the steel during grinding.

The colour of the handle readily identifies our

turning tools.

Chisels are used for convex, conical and cylindrical features in spindle turning, they are also used for cleaning up end grain and vee cuts. Oval section skews

are easier to use and offer enhanced sensitivity and precise handling, they are more stable on the rest and less prone to dig-ins . Standard skews are stronger

and heavier and less prone to vibration. Square end chisels are the traditional choice for planning cuts on cylinders and tapered forms. Used correctly they give

a wonderful finish even on difficult wood. Planning cuts can also be done with a skew chisel.

Chris Stott set of Micro Hollowing ToolsThis set, personally designed by Chris Stott is ideal for

small hollow forms up to 3 or 4 inches in depth or diameter.

The straight nose scraper will remove most of the interior

and the two bent scrapers will work the curved areas of the

work, including tight areas around the neck of the opening.

Fingernail Profile GougesMost woodturners have difficulty in achieving a fingernail

profile. Henry Taylor Tools have been providing fingernail

gouge to the overseas market for

a number of years and have now introduced a selection

of gouges with a factory ground fingernail profile to

the U.K. market.

We have adopted a medium grind as this is not only safe in

use, but also allows the turner to modify the profile to his

specific requirements.

Wing tips ground back so they cannot catch on the work.

Pulling and pushing cuts can be taken Delicate shearing cuts

and full profiling cuts are easier with this profile.

Mini Turning ToolsDesigned for miniature turning such as goblets, tops, tagua nuts and jewellery.

5. H.S.S. Turning Tools by Ray Key. - 3/8" & 1/2" H.S.S. Modified Spindle Gouges.Used mainly for making boxes, from hard dense end grain material. Internal hollowing from the centre is made easy

with the short stubby 60/65ß angle, this allows for a strong vibration free pivot cutting action, as the bevel can be

rubbed for much of the time. For outside shaping the long side grind is used with the bevel rubbing, the tool is pulled

along the material. Quality of surface obtained is the equivalent of a skew chisel, but is much better than a skew on

difficult woods. This tool is also used for refined shaping of the outside of small bowls. Used correctly the bevel

rubs with a slicing cut action and leaves a very clean tool finish, no scraping is required. End grain hollowing on

softer woods and larger work is best done with the 1/2" gouge. The end/side cutting scraper is made from a 3/4"

square end scraper. This is used to true up gouge ripples in the base of flat bottomed boxes and to true up the side

walls. The 1/2" skew is one that has a much longer angle than normal, it is used more like a sheer scraper on end

grain and for cutting the dovetail undercut on bowls and platters required by many of today’s chucks. The 3/4" round

side scraper is used for the truing up of gouge ripples in the base of soft curved boxes, goblets, egg cups etc. The

modified straight across the grind make it much easier to remove the nipple or pimple often found in such items

when the rounded end ones are used.

1. Designed by Richard Raffan.Richard began woodturning in 1970 and can be described as one of the world s foremost authorities on

this craft. Drawing on his vast experience Richard has designed a range of tools which are produced from heavy

section materials, with particular attention given to the curved cutting edge shapes. The tools are safe to use because

the thick material does not flex thus reducing the chance of catches. The curved cutting edges are less prone to catches

and much enhance the versatility and controlled performance of the tools.

3a. Parting Tool developed by Kip Christensen. This narrow parting tool is ideal for working with the hard dense woods used in boxes and tops. It produces a

shearing cut and a flat smooth surface.

The following tools have been developed in cooperation with international expert Ray Key.

A. Key Parting Tool HSS. Section 1/2" x 3/32"

Used with the widest width of the tool down on the rest, the tapered section gives tool clearance and stops binding. HS 107

B&C. Key French Curve Scrapers HSS. Section 11/2" x 3/8" for larger work 1" x 1/4" for smaller workThe shape of the tool makes it easy to remove any ripples and undulations from the bowl gouge. Blending of curves is easy and outward side

pressure on the walls of bowls is virtually eliminated when the tool is used correctly. (Side pressure can cause wood to flex and give a catch or dig in and shatter.) HS 108 & HS 109

D. Key Round Cutaway ScraperHSS. Section 3/4" x 1/4"

For inside work with small openings the

cut away section allows easier

manipulation under any shoulder and

minimises the chance of fouling the tool

on the far side of the opening. HS 110

E. Key Shear Scraper HSS.Section 11/2" x 5/16"

The stubby heavy section and rounded

edges makes for easy use and damps

down vibration. Used at an angle of 30¡

to 45¡ out of the horizontal, gives a fine

finish on difficult timbers when used in

this way, for bowls and flat work.

Supertip 000

* Starter kit consists of 300mm long x 16mm round bar holder fitted with a 300mmlong handle with two tips of your choice.

With a larger radius at the bottom of the

flute. Preferred by many turners for

grinding back to special pointed shapes.

Pointed nose style also available.

This works like a ring tool but has superior

clearance for shavings and - because it has a

smaller working radius is much easier to

control. Gives an excellent finish and can

hollow into deep and awkward places where a

ring tool could not reach. Also good for deep

straight sided hollows. It has two cutting edges

with different bevel angles.

Loop Hollowing Tool

Angled Gouge - Superflute profileThis tip produces a much superior

finish inside a bowl - even a deep

bowl. Easier to get a smooth

flowing interior curve without

steps in the shape. The handle can be used

horizontal so a pivoting head lathe is not

needed for good results.

Straight Gouge - Superflute profilePerforms exactly as the original

Superflute for general and heavy

duty bowl turning.

Tips just screw in. No grub screws to clog. No special tools needed.

Tips can be freely interchanged or replaced when worn.

Tool stays virtually its full length in use. Shank is strongerand more rigid than a conventional gouge. Shank cannotsnap. Extra long shanks available.

Tip is flush with the shank - nothing to catch on the tool rest.

Tips are easy to sharpen on conventional equipment and keep an extra keen edge.

Tool is just as easy to use and gives a superior finish.

Grind in the ordinary way on a standard grindstone or if a new wheel is to be purchased choose a soft white aluminium oxide wheel 60 to 80 grit

size, medium to soft grade K. The grindstone as with all tool grinding must be kept clean and dressed if glazed. H.S.S. unlike carbon steel will not

soften if coloured by the heat of grinding but the temper colours must definitely be avoided if maximum performance from the cutting edge is

desired. This is because there is a risk of minute cracks developing at the edge which weakens it. This again can damage the steel. Do not remove

more metal than is absolutely necessary to leave a sharp edge. Do not round off the bevel. Find the correct angle and stick to it. Honing is beneficial

for most of the tools especially when turning softwood. However, most turners only hone the chisels and use the other tools straight from the

grindstone.

Bevel angles, measured from the axis of the tool, recommended for general use :-

Superflute bowl gouge - 40 degrees. Chisels - 15 degrees, 30 degree included angle.

Spindle gouges - 35 degrees, less for softwood. Scrapers - 60 to 70 degrees.

Hints on Sharpening - H.S.S. Turning Tools

Cranked Paring Gouges.Long narrow blades with cranked neck, allowing the chisel blade to be used flat on work surface. Cutting edge

ground on inside giving an outside cut. Blade about 8" long.
