To All Our Team Schein M

    embers:

    Global warming. Soaring con

    sumption of diminishing natural

    resources. Overflowing landfills

    .

    Air and water pollution. These

are just a few of the complex g

    lobal environmental issues that

    we are facing together. The

    green movement, which has b

ecome a priority in many coun

    tries

around the world, seeks to add

    ress these and other environmen

tal issues in a variety of ways.

Like any other global issue, the

    solutions will come only throug

    h partnership and commitment

    by governments, organizations

    and each of usindividually.

At Henry Schein, we are committed to contributing to soluti

    ons to our environmental crisis,

    and we encourage every Team

Schein Memberto identify ways that he or she

    also can

    contribute individually. Answe

rs will be as diverse as our team

    , and may varyfrom community

    to community, but the essential

activity is to share our suggestio

ns with each other and to ado

    pt

    appropriate initiatives whereve

r possible. In this way, we can

be sure that Henry Schein and

    all Team ScheinMembers are d

oing what we can to protect ou

    r planet.

Going Greenis a first step in

    that process. The initiatives de

tailed in this brochure are just

    some of the successful program

s that have been adopted by H

    enry Scheins various locations

    around the world. Please cons

    ider implementing them if you

    REGARDING OUR GREEN PROGRAMS

Henry Schein has incorporated many green initiatives over the years and continues to

research alternative processes and materials on an ongoing basis. These initiatives are

underway at various Henry Schein locations around the world. If they are not happeningat your location, we hope this information will inspire you to look into the

initiatves that may be appropriate for your facility.

Car Pooling A car pooling site has been set up on TSX that allows

Team Schein Members to coordinate rides with other TSMs. We

encourage Team Schein Members to car pool where it meets their needs

and work schedules. Sharing rides is cost-effective, convenient, reduces

traffic congestion, and helps the environment. Team Schein Members can

post their information through the link:tsx.henryschein.com/C9/C6/CarPool/default.aspx

Green Certified Peroxide Cleaner is used for cleaning. This product is a peroxide-based

solution that is considered environmentally friendly.

Green Certified Carpet Cleaner is a product used in our facilities. It is an oxidizer

    and is considered environmentally friendly.

Green Certified Hand Soap is dispensed in a controlled amount via hands-free units

    installed in some facilities.

Paper Towels and Toilet Tissue made from 70% recycled material is used at

    several facilities.

Several facilities around the world recycle batteries.

Fluorescent Lights Tubes that contain mercury are considered

regulated waste and cannot be land filled. Fluorescent light tubes are

now removed by an approved waste hauler.

Motion Light Sensors are installed in some of our buildings to reduceenergy consumption.

Cardboard and White Paper is source separated and taken away

for recycling at many facilities, thus reducing our waste-removal costs.

At our Corporate Headquarters in Melville, New York, we have recycled

a total of 102 tons of paper and cardboard since January 2007.

Imprimvert Method In France and some other European countries only

printing companies who follow the Imprimvert method of printing are used.

This means they are using maximum care to reduce waste while using only

recyclable inks. This initiative fulfills requirements under the FSC

(Forest Stewardship Council is a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging

the responsible management of the worlds forests.) and the PEFC (A Program for

the Endorsement of Forest Certification, an independent, nonprofit, nongovernmental

organization that promotes sustainable forests through independent, third-party

    certification in European countries.)

Toner Cartridge Recycling We recycle toner cartridges in many facilities

around the world. According to Office Depot, each remanufactured toner

cartridge keeps approximately 2.5 pounds of metal and plastic out of

landfillsand conserves about a half gallon of oil. Dedication to Recycling:

Corrugated boxes used in Henry Schein Espaas are made from100% recycled products.

All ink cartridges and computer elements (screens, mouses, etc.) at manylocations are 100% recycled.

    Batteries from telephones are recycled.

Corrugated boxes from deliveries and couriers are recycled daily.

    White paper is recycled.

T-5 Fluorescent Bulbs These bulbs are in use throughout our Corporate

East building and our Grapevine Distribution Center, to name a few, and are the

most energy efficient of the fluorescent bulbs on the market today, reducing

both electric consumption and carbon dioxide emmissions.

Natural Gas Direct-Fired Absorbers and High-Efficiency Motors

These improvements were recently added to the Corporate West building,

reducing electric loads by up to 15kW.

Building Management System (BMS) Both of our Corporate Campus

buildings are equipment with a BMS. This BMS controls all aspects of the physical

plant including nightly set back and weekend set back. When the buildings are

not occupied the physical plant is shut down to reduce energy consumption.

Silver-Coated Roof The roof of the Corporate West Building is silver

coated to help reflect summer heat loads.

Catalog Production We use recycled paper for some of the catalogs and

sales flyers produced by our Company worldwide.

Computer Efficiency Whenever possible, we cut the physical number of

servers and physical hardware through consolidation and virtualization.

Consolidation of physical units greatly affects the amount of power

consumed by the data center and can also represents lower-acquisition

costs. Further consolidation is planned for 2009.

    Additional I.S. Initiatives Taking Place

Storage is reduced by the use of SANS (Storage Area Network)

and hardware devices that consolidate storage space.

Implemented energy-efficient hardware, such as multicore CPUs, reduce redundant

and external electronics and save on energy.

Installed CPU performance-stepping technology dynamically adjusts the energy

that processors require in relationship to processor load.

When possible, we purchase hardware that utilizes liquid cooling.

This can limit the amount of energy needed to remove heat from the data center.

When applicable, we follow the hot aisle/cold aisle layout for arranging equipment

in the data center. This design lets cool air flow through the aisles to the servers'

front-air intake, and lets hot air flow from the back of servers to the AC-return ducts,

which require less energy for cooling.

Whenever possible, we look for software or make application changes that aremultithreaded to take advantage of multicore-processor machines.

The Company is working with other facilities on a project that

would remove clutter from below the floors and run the electric

above the equipment. This will free up space under the floor for

    better air movement and cooling.

We are also working with facilities to contain and seal the Data

Center from above the ceiling to create a closed air system that

will save on air conditioning by having better air flow and circulation.Currently the air flow mixes with other areas outside of the Data Center perimeter.

Distribution Center Efficiency Many of our U.S. distribution centers have installed auto

faucets as well as auto lighting both indoors and out, including several distribution centers in

Canada and Europe. Many European, U.S., and Canadian facilities also purchase recycled

materials to pack and ship our orders, including their dunnage (packing material) and

corrugated boxes shipped to our customers. Where possible, much of this waste material

is recycled at each facility and is part of other recycling programs that include cans, pallets,

    printer cartridges, and paper.

Equipment Sales and Service Centers Our 630 plus technicians currently

drive the Chevrolet Express 2500 with the 4.8 liter engine. This is rated the most

fuel-efficient cargo van in its class with an average advantage of 9% in MPG

and produces 1.8 metric tons of greenhouse gas less than its closest competitor.

For model year 2009, we will be offering the option of a lighter service van with

a smaller engine which will reduce fuel consumption by 6% and greenhouse gas

per year of .8 metric tons per vehicle.

All furniture standards currently used in HSD sales and service centers reduce

environmental impact in the following ways:

Contain recycled contentthe standards are made from 20%30%

    recycled product.

Recyclabilityall standard furniture is greater than 83% recyclable.

Certification for low chemical emissionsall furniture is certified by

the Scientific Certifications System (SCS), an independent international

recognized organization, to have low chemical emissions.

Henry Schein Dental Trade Show Booth

Another prominent Company initiative with an environmental impact is the newHenry Schein Dental trade show booth, which the Company unveiled in

February at the Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting. The new booth,

which includes dental products and services from 13 of the Company's

business groups, also incorporates several innovations that make

60 percent of the booth environmentally friendly. The booth uses as

much postconsumer content as possible, including furnishings made

of recycled materials, reusable floor coverings, and recycled or reused

crates for shipping. It includes low-voltage lighting to minimize energy

usage and contains recycling receptacles throughout the booth.Henry Schein materials distributed during shows are printed on recycled

paper using soy-based ink, and the Company's trade show badge lanyards

are made of recycled soda bottles.

TIPS FOR GOING GREEN AT WORK

Turn out the lights. Lighting eats up 44% of electricity used in office buildings. We'd

collectively save enormous amounts by turning out all those little desk lamps and overheads.

Use Public Transportation or car pool whenever possible. Or just try to commit to this option

one day per week as part of your commute. Even one day can make a huge difference.

Smart Printing The average U.S. office worker goes through 10,000 sheets of copy paper

each year. Where appropriate, make it a habit to print on both sides of the paper or to

use the back side of old documents for faxes, scrap paper, or drafts. Avoid color printing

    when unnecessary.

Stop wasting office supplies. What's the point of having a job if you can't plaster your wall

with Post-Its, you ask? Think of it this way: it's about not being responsible for the felling of1,000 trees. Recycle paper clips, file folders, etc.

Go Paperless Make it a habit to think before you print: could this be read or stored online

instead? Request to be removed from mailing lists for any unwanted catalogs, newsletters,

magazines, and junk mail. Make it a policy to post Team Schein Member manuals and similar

materials online, rather than distribute print copies. Theyre easier to update that way too.

Reports When was the last time you took a hard look at all the reports you are receiving

each month, each week, or every day? Take the time to review your reports and see if you

still need or even look at the printed copies you are receiving.

Maximize Computer Efficiency Make it a habit to turn off your computer, and the power strip

its plugged into, when you leave for the day. Otherwise, you are still burning energy even if

you are not burning the midnight oil.

Traveling Make it a habit to take the train, bus, or subway where available instead of a

using a rental car when traveling on business trips. If you have to rent a car, some rental

agencies now offer hybrids and other high-mileage vehicles.

Video Conferencing Make it a point to use videoconferencing and other technological

solutions, whenever appropriate. This will reduce the amount of Team Schein Member travel.

TIPS FOR GOING GREEN AT HOME

Ditch the Paper Towels! Instead, pick up micro-fiber cloth towels to use all around

the house. Thousands of tiny little fibers literally grip and hold onto the dirt and bacteria.

The best part? They are machine-washable, so you can use them over and over again.Just spray a surface with a non-toxic, all-purpose green cleaner and wipe away.

Java Scrub The next time you brew a cup of fresh coffee at home, don't toss the used

coffee grinds into the trash. First, spoon some warm grinds into your hands and mix it with

your favorite hand soap. Now scrub away. The grinds will exfoliate dead skin off your

hands and the soap will keep everything squeaky clean. Scatter the remaining grinds

around your evergreen shrubs and treesit's an energizing fertilizer for your plants!

Energy Saving Lighting Artificial lighting accounts for 44% of the electricity used in

your home. Make it a habit to turn off the lights when youre leaving any room for 15 minutesor more and utilize natural light when you can. Make it a policy to buy Energy Star-rated light

bulbs and fixtures, which use at least 2/3 less energy than regular lighting. Install timers or

motion sensors to automatically shut off lights when theyre not needed.

Recycle Make it a habit to recycle everything you can in your home. Some local

governments already make some recycling mandatory. But what can you do if you want

to do more? You can recycle your old cell phones, PDAs, or pagers. Make it a policy to

place recycling bins in accessible areas around the home and have a family meeting to

discuss what you are all trying to accomplish. Traveling Whenever possible, take the train, bus, or subway, when available,

instead of your car when traveling with your family or friends.

Commuting Consider some alternative ways of travel such as joining a car-sharing

service like Zipcar (http://www.zipcar.com) which is expanding to more cities around

the country. This is a great alternative to owning your own car.

Healthy Homes Use nontoxic cleaning products. Putting plants around your home will

absorb indoor pollution. When redecorating or remodeling, consider buying furniture,

carpeting, and paint that are free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and will not giveoff toxic chemicals.

Soy Candles When burning candles around the house, choose clean-burning soy candles.

Traditional candles are paraffin-based, which is made from nonrenewable petroleum.

They also emit soot and smoke into the air, polluting your indoor air as well. Soy candles

are a much cleaner choice and made fromyou guessed itsoy beans! They're easy to

find and the best part is they burn longer than paraffin candles, so you get more soothing

scents for your cents. One final tip: Try placing unlit soy candles in your sock drawer to

    gently scent them.

    TIPS FOR GOING GREEN

  • 8/9/2019 HENRY SCHEIN GREEN PROGRAMS

    12/13

Dodge the Drafts Keep the blustery cold air outdoors by stopping drafts at

windows and doors. Place a draft dodgera long fabric tubealong the edges

where cold seeps inside to stop it in its tracks. For smaller windows, you can make

your own dodger. Just fill a large sock, such as an athletic sock, with pebbles thentie a knot at the end.

Be Sparing With the Paint Doing some home improvement work this weekend?

When painting walls, make sure you buy just enough paint. Use the HGTV.com online

paint calculator to help determine the right amount for the job. Select the type of

surface you want to paint, the finish and dimensions of the room. This will help

prevent buying too much paint and cut down on waste.

Put Your Computer to Sleep Remove your computers screen saver.

When those flying toasters are activated on your screen, the computer is stillrunning on full power. Instead, put your computer in "sleep" or "standby" mode,

so the stroke of a key will wake up your PC right away.

Recycle Your Cell Phone Bring your old cell phones to a Call2Recycle box.

Call2Recycle is a nonprofit program from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling

Corporation (RBRC) (www.rbrc.org/call2recycle ). They will recycle your

phone for free into new metal products. You'll find these collection boxes in

stores like Radio Shack, Best Buy, and The Home Depot.

Trap Your Trash Did you know most trash strewn on the street isn't fromlitterbugs, but from a gust of wind? Ill-fitting trash can lids (or overflowing cans

of debris) are the real culprit. Wind blows trash away or a wild animal may rip

open a plastic trash bag, causing trash to stray. The solution is simple: buy a trash

can with a tight-fitting lid. Also, don't toss debris into overflowing public trash cans.

Make Donations If you're trying to find a new home for a piece of furniture,

a bag of clothes, an old chandelier, or anything that's hard to recycle, give

www.FreeCycle.org a try. This free Web site connects people with things

to give away with people who need those things. It's organized by ZIP codes,

so it will put you into contact with groups in your community. No money can everexchange hands and everything has to be totally free.

Reduce Consumption. Do you really need that new shirt? Clothing is the top

contributor to negative environmental impact of all consumer product purchases.
