Edict of Nantes The Edict of Nantes, issued on April 15 1598, by Henry IV of France.it granted the Protestants of France substantial rights in a nation still considered mostly Catholic. the law granted religious and civil liberties to the French Protestants

Henry of Navarre Henry was born on December 13, 1553, in pau, France. HE was King of Navarre from 1572 to 1610 and King of France from 1589 to 1610. He was the first French monarch of the House of Bourbon. he put an end to the civil wars of France by embracing the Roman Catholic religion. HE was crowned by the united nation at Chartres in 1594. To secure his old followers, he published the Edict of Nantes April 15, 1598

What happened Henry of Navarre ended the crisis and restored order by signing the law the Edict of Nantes. This law guaranteed religious freedom for Protestants. It accomplished this by allowing for the amnesty and restoration of civil rights.

How does this event show religious disunity in Europe? In France, the protestants were at war with the Catholics. Henry, the leader of the protestants, converted and became Catholic. This ended the fighting. When he converted, the Catholics accepted him as king which led to political stability. In 1598, Henry issued the Edict of Nantes which gave Protestants religious freedom. The Edict of Nantes was a symbol of the fact that the war of religions was over.
