We’re moving into that time of year for thoughts of apples, pumpkins, and Halloween. SoCal weather, however, usually gives us an extended period of warmth and sunshine, broken up by an occasional Santa Anas to remind us of the hot days we’re leaving behind. It is hoped that those members of the Nobility who lost so much, or all, at the Al Bahr Shrine Camp, and the few “survivors” untouched by the Chariot Fire but now “marooned”, had an opportunity to attend one of the two “Town Hall” meetings of September 12 and 21, where counsel representing Nobles were available to analyze recent judicial proceedings and gave their best advice on what to anticipate in future orders, and recommended strategies. There will also be the observance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in the closing weeks of the month.October 1st is the scheduled Second Annual Potentate’s Cup, taking place at the Vineyards in Escondido, sponsored by the Islander’s Shrine Club. The Chief Rabban’s Fund Raiser is scheduled for Friday, October 20, in our spacious Temple. Please attend and support this event as it will assist the 2018 Potentate in his ventures AND ultimately inures to the benefit of all Al Bahr Shriners, their ladies, our Temple. October 27 and 28 are the dates for the Scottish Rite Reunion, featuring our Ceremonial on Saturday morning, the 28th at 8:00. Ladies, families, and friends are invited to witness their loved ones becoming members of the World’s Greatest Philanthropy. Reservations and payments for dinner on the 28th must be made IN ADVANCE of the 28th; contact the Office (858) 292-0092 for additional information or questions you may have. It is my pleasure to honor Henry “Hank” Marbott at our Fall Ceremonial, October 28th. “Commander” Hank is a 20-year plus retired veteran of the United States Navy and service in the Korean War and Vietnam. In addition to his Master’s Degree in Education and Lifetime California Teaching Credential, he worked 20 years in the Poway School District. Finally, CONGRATULATIONS to all the Ladies who worked together for their highly successful and well-attended “Champagne and Shoes Friendship Tea”. Kudos once again to our Director’s Staff for their innovative designs, props, and backdrops in support of this rewarding fundraiser.

I was fortunate to be born into a family of Masons. Indeed my older sister was Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Illinois. My DeMolay experience came very naturally because of my father and

brothers. Thus was my youth much enhanced.Burl Ives, Master Mason

Ladies and Nobles, it being the holiday season. I would like to pose this question to you. What does faith and/or belief mean to you and your loved ones? Does it mean that you have faith in higher power or supreme being or does it mean that you believe something to be true? Belief and Faith are two words that are often confused when it comes to their meaning, even though, there are differences between the two words. This is because they appear to have simi-lar meanings. Strictly speaking they are not so. They are, in fact, different in terms of their inner meanings. Contemplate these two and maybe you will learn something about yourself that you didn’t know before. Please keep the people of Texas and Florida in your thoughts and prayers, now and in the coming months. Yours in faith

Al Bahr Shrine Camp-Chariot FireTwo town hall meetings were held in September at the Shrine Center to hear from the legal firm representing Al Bahr Shrine in the lawsuit regarding the Chariot Fire and loss of Shrine property at Mt. Laguna. They presented information on the lawsuit in a concise and understandable manner and explained the process to date. Several questions from the Shrine members were asked and explanations given. The presentation was informative and well attended.Future town hall meetings will be announced via the Shrine’s website.

Director’s StaffThe end of October will be the Chief Rabbans’ fund raiser for we’ll have to see what sort of magic that Dockery and the rest of the Staff can come up with. I wanted to thank everybody in the Direc-tors Staff for their support in these different projects whether it be directly in producing the different backdrops or in a support roll such as cooking for the burger cookout. It all matters. I’m still look-ing at other Units and Clubs for any construction projects that you might need accomplished for your next function. The only request that we have is that the request come in at least 60 days in advance of the event to give us time to develop the project. Our Thursday Burger cook out is in full swing. It’s good to see Bob Stuckey, James Glunt and Steve Bumgarner at it again. It looks like the at-tendance to the Thursday affair has increased pretty soon we’ll have a cast of thousands which is a good thing. So, come by and enjoy a burger and some comradery.Bruce SmithDirectors Staff President(619)840-1943

Assistant Rabban - Gene YeeHello, Nobles. Here we are in Fall, 2017. Last month, our Grand Master, and member of Al Bahr Shriners, the Most Worshipful John R. Heisner, was honored in a Blue Lodges reception, and in return, he honored our brothers who were named Mason of the Year for their respective lodge. They were each honored for their outstand-ing contributions to our craft, and many of these special brothers are Nobles in Al Bahr. Two of special note are Noble Bill Stokes and Noble Jezzie Centillas. Besides their contributions to their Blue Lodge and the craft, Noble Bill has been active with the Past Mas-ters Shrine Club and the Grand Master’s trip to England, and Noble Jezzie is Vice President of the Peace Officers Shrine Club and a regular Samaritan Driver. Most Worshipful Sir Heisner mentioned in his talk that San Diego is the only Scottish Rite Valley in California where the Blue Lodges jointly put on the Mason of the Year award ceremonies. our base from whence we came. Our Grand Master gave a most inspiring talk that reached all Masons on multiple levels. He and First Lady Margo have spent these past 12 months on the road worldwide, representing all Masons of California as our Public Face, and I am personally honored and grateful for this representation. This month, as he relinquishes his gavel, I want to thank him and Margo both professionally and personally for their great sacrifices and for the positive reputation in which they presented our craft.

Shaaru CourtShaaru Court #37 has Units just like Al Bahr Shrine does. One of our Units is the Giggletimers (AKA Clowns Unit) which is very active. The Unit only has four members and has performed all over the San Diego area. Members consist of Barbara Martinez (AKA Sweet Baboo); Kathy Cannon (AKA GiGi); Mary Jo Dreyer (AKA Prissy); and Carol Dale (AKA Sparkles). The 2017 events were attended by Sweet Baboo, GiGi and Prissy for the following: Febru-ary 19th, Jump Start your Heart Walk; March 11th, St Paddy’s Day Parade; April 15th, Lakeside Parade; July 4th, Coronado Parade and July 19th Camp Wana Kura for American Diabetes Association Camp at Santee Lakes; and August 1st, Clown National Night Out at Santee Trolley Station with Santee Sheriff’s Station and Lake-side Sheriff’s Station. Also Barbara Martinez performed with the Al Bahr Clowns and Kathy Cannon does a lot of outings with the All Star Clown with their active members. The Giggletimers will be in the BOO Parade in October.Sharon Pennington for Jeanne Cohen

On September 9th a reception was held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center to honor the Grand Master of Masons in California, John Heisner. There were more than 550 people in attendance at this special evening. At this reception the local Lodges nominated one of their members to be recognized as their Mason of The Year and we are pleased to announce the following members of Al Bahr Shrine who received this wonderful recognition for their service to the Family of Freemasonry.

The Al Bahr Shrine Legion of Honor had the privilege of presenting the flag of the United States of America to open the evening festivities. It was a great evening for our fraternity and exhibited the true spirit of cooperation and brotherhood which exists within San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Chief Rabban - Oscar O. CañedoI hope you are all well. As I am home sitting at my desk writing my October article, I cannot help thinking about our September 11th 2001 national tragedy and the loss of so many lives. Estoy tratando de escribir mi artículo para octubre pero también estoy pensando de la tragedia que occurió el 11 de septiembre de 2001 en los Estados Unidos. I am also thinking about the victims of the hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Katia. También pienso de los damni-ficados que ha causado los huracanes Harvey, Irma, y Katia. Here in San Diego, many of us have not heard of the recent flooding that has occurred in Baja California Sur and also the terrible 8.2 earthquake in Mexico. Aquí en San Diego, muchos no han oído de lo que ha ocurrido en Baja California Sur y el terremoto (8.2) en Mexico. Our Shriners Hospitals for Children in the affected areas as well as our Hospital in Mexico City are fine. Nuestros Hospitales Shriners para Niños en las áreas afectadas de los Estados Unidos y México están bien. May God bless all who have suffered from the United States and Mexico. Que Dios bendiga a todos que han sufrido en los Estados Unidos y en México

Honored LadiesThe next meeting of the Honored Ladies of Al Bahr Shrine will be Saturday October 14th. Come at 9:30 for coffee and snacks and browse the book table. The meeting then starts at 10:00. At the September meeting, Niki shared a few entertaining humorous events with us. Come in October to see who is sharing their story. All are welcome to stay and play dominoes after the meeting. A big THANK YOU to Nobles Gene Yee and Oscar Cañedo for generously providing the lovely brunch of Lumpia, Pancit, and delicious birthday cake at our September 9th meeting. We welcomed two new members that day! All enjoyed the fellowship and delicious food. Thanks again, Nobles! Our Game Day is the fourth Thursday of each month, also at the Shrine Center. This month it’s October 26th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Bring a sandwich or purchase a delicious grilled hamburger prepared by the Director’s Staff. Hope to see you at the Honored Ladies meeting October 14th and Game Day October 26th. Fun fact: Valentine’s Day is no longer the sweetest national holiday—at least when it comes to candy sales. More than twice as much chocolate is sold for Halloween as for Valentine’s Day; 90 million pounds of chocolate are sold during Halloween week alone. In total, $1.9 billion is spent on Halloween candy each year. Happy Trick or Treating!Alice Mansfield, scribe

Antique & Classic CarThe Club hopes to have a few cars available for the Mother Goose Parade in November. Plans are in the works for a Club dinner on Tuesday, October 24th and notices will be sent to all members with the full details. The Club members have taken a few Thursdays off from working at the Shrine Shed due to traveling and the excessive heat. The usual Thursday get together will resume and all shrine members or any Mason is invited to drop by.Robert Seybold, President

Samaritan DriversAs we are still in a holding pattern waiting for the final Okay from the State of California we did not have much activity since the last issue of the ALBAHRoMETER. We did make 1 trip to Pasadena with 2 kids and sent 12 via commercial transportation at a cost of$360.00. There were an additional 3 transported to Sacramento by air. I have not seen the invoice for that yet. The driver’s did give 29 hours of their time while adding 482 miles to the vans. Some of our drivers are calling and want to know if there are any trips to be made. All I can tell them is that as soon as the state issues the license and we start getting transportation request’s they will be the first one I will be calling. Until then I want to thank all of you for your continued dedication to the children we serve. Keep the shiny side up and watch out for the other guy.Gene, PresidentSamaritan Drivers Club.

Recorder’s OfficeShriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. Nobles, we need new members. Not just members to pay dues but members to help our clubs and units, to help the Hospitals, to help Al Bahr. Go to your Blue Loge. Stand and present some fun facts about being a Shriner, tell a story of your own, show them we have fun. Remind them that if they need help we will come. The Past Masters help put on degrees, The Sons of the Desert will come fix dinner, The clowns will help entertain at events, all they need to do is ask! We need to return to our roots and our Blue Lodges, this is where our new members are at, this is where we need to provide more support and visibility. Let them know we are them and they can be us. When you find new candidates, help them understand what is to come. Help them get to a meeting, a fund raiser, a club or unit event. Be the mentor you once had or wished you had. Call on others to help them. Get them involved. Show them the fun. You can email us at [email protected] , call us at 858-292-0092, and even send us a fax at 858-292-5618. If you would like to send a private note to the recorder you can do that at [email protected].
