THE ANDRE AGASSI STORY
Andre Agassi is simply one of the biggest names in the history of tennis.
An eight-time Grand Slam winner, the American was one of the game’s most dominant
players from the early 1990s until well into the new Millennium.
On his retirement, the BBC described him as “perhaps the biggest worldwide star in the
sport’s history”.
Born in Las Vegas in 1970, the young Agassi famously beat football legend Jim Brown three
sets to love at his local club - earning his father $500 into the bargain. Agassi was just nine.
After moving to Florida at the age of 13 to continue his development, he turned pro in 1986,
bringing a riot of colour to the courts with his outlandish outfits. But underneath the
charismatic facade his talents really began to shine.
His dominance from the baseline quickly saw him move up the rankings and he won his first
Grand Slam in 1992 at, of all places, Wimbledon - a tournament he had previously avoided
due to its strict all-white clothing policy.
Five more Grand Slam finals quickly followed, Agassi winning two, before his star waned due
to a series of personal problems. However, in 1998 - having sunk to World No110 - a
punishing training regime with fitness coach Gil Reyes, along with a new-found determination,
saw him leap to No6 - the highest ever jump by a Top 10 player in a calendar year.
He never looked back, winning five more Grand Slams before retiring in 2006.
In a glittering career, he was the first male to win all four Grand Slam titles on three different
surfaces, as well as three Davis Cups and 1996 Olympic Gold for the United States. He also
earned a spectacular 17 ATP Masters Series titles along the way. His prize money topped
$30m. Since retiring Agassi has launched many business ventures - including BILT by Agassi &
Reyes - as well as becoming famed for his philanthropy, most notably the Andre Agassi
Charitable Foundation, raising more than $60m for vulnerable children in South Nevada.
He is married to former tennis star Steffi Graff. They live in Las Vegas with their two children.

Who is the Reyes in BILT by Agassi & Reyes? He’s the Man.
For more than four decades, Gil Reyes has coached athletes to become champions in their respective sport.
The greatest of those partnerships began in 1987 when a teenage Andre Agassi sought help from Reyes, then the head strength and conditioning coach for the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels basketball team. Reyes’ method of safely and efficiently building strength helped UNLV win the NCAA men’s basketball championship in
1990. He saw even bigger potential in Agassi and left UNLV that year to become Agassi’s
strength and fitness coach. Under Reyes’ guidance, Agassi won every major men’s singles
title in tennis over the next 16 years, including eight Grand Slam trophies on permanent
display at Reyes’ Las Vegas gym. Reyes’ unconventional approach to training stems from a multi-faceted career that has
included hosting fitness shows, writing about fitness and designing and building weight
machines. His simple training philosophies transcend sports and emphasize mental as
well as physical strength. For decades, athletes have relied on his many “Gilisms” to make it through grueling training
sessions, including “Weak legs command, strong legs obey” and “All the good stuff is on
the other side of tired.” Reyes has served as the strength and fitness training coach for the Adidas Player
Development Program since Agassi’s retirement from professional tennis in 2006. The
program provides coaching, fitness training, hitting partners, nutritional advice and career
management for tennis pros. Some of Reyes’ fitness clients include Fernando Verdaso,
Caroline Wozniacki, Sania Mirza, Grigor Dimitrov, Laura Robson, Raluca Olaru and Sorana
Cirstea. Before arriving in Las Vegas, Reyes was employed as a strength and conditioning coach at
New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. In El Paso, Texas, Reyes ran the Gil Reyes USA
Fitness Center and served as fitness training coach for former lightweight karate champion
Cliff “Magic” Thomas. Reyes also wrote fitness columns for the El Paso Times newspaper and hosted a
television segment on fitness topics on the local NBC affiliate in El Paso. Reyes graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1973 with a Bachelor of
Arts degree in political science. Stay tuned as Gil updates us on his summer travels supporting his athletes in their efforts to
pursue Grand Slam championships.

court,’ Andre confessed. ‘I had to work to find ways to be better and strength was a huge component to my success and also my longevity. ‘I credit my trainer Gil who cared about me for over two decades, so much so that he designed equipment on napkins while sitting on flights, with the aim of trying to get fitter. As far as equipment goes, this is everything that I needed.
‘I’m delighted that the hard work and passion that has gone into many years of development has been recognised by David Lloyd Leisure. The greatest seal of approval that the BILT By Agassi & Reyes could get, they know the business here and it’s a testament to what we’ve done, so it was worth coming over and celebrating it.’Once he’d proudly shown off his cutting-edge line of fitness equipment, the charming American, forever smiling, spent time with the burgeoning tennis talent David Lloyd has training at this facility.
Many of them weren’t even around during his star-studded career and hadn’t been born upon his retirement in 2006, yet the juniors, no doubt with the help of their parents, were made to feel like this master class experience was a highly momentous one.A Wimbledon darling during his heyday, Andre, still handy with a racquet by the way, was clearly impressed with what he had to see. ‘It’s a real thrill to come here and see the grassroots and witness the sport capture these kids’ imagination, where they can get involved with the game.’
The chance to rally with one of the game’s greats provided the beaming kids with a mightily impressive show-and-tell school anecdote for the following morning. ‘I wasn’t prepared to play but couldn’t resist the temptation, sweating up a storm and having a lot of fun. Although it appears it’s not a big deal beating me anymore, because everyone can do that,’ Andre jested.
A natural presence with children, the former world number one, a father of two himself, welcomed all questions, however irrelevant, serving up insightful replies to each topic, enlightening his audience on his upbringing, inspirations and career.‘When you’re growing up and learning the game, if you’re the best tennis player on the court, you should pick another tennis court,’ he advised. ‘The only way you improve is if you push yourself. Force yourself to play people better than you, so you can be down break point and match point and feel the pressure. Then every
now and then play someone you’re better than, just to make you feel good!’With the courts a hive of activity, most of the excitable children summed up their experience in the customary reply, ‘Amazing’. It was left to the equally spellbound parents to convey just what Andre’s visit meant to their youngsters. With their 10-year-old son Sean highly thought of by his coaches and the owner of a more than useful forehand, local parent’s Karen and Simon Meyer feel that Andre will now join Rafael Nadal as one of their son’s heroes.‘Sean comes down here on a Saturday playing in the All Star squad and he’s also played for David Lloyd Chigwell in the National Championships. He enters quite a few tournaments, around three a month, he just loves it, so this evening will definitely make a difference to him. Andre gave some fantastic words of advice, proving an inspirational speaker for the children, but it was as much fun for the parents as it was for the kids,’ Simon joked. ■

Agassi: Murray will not let up
First published in National Sport

Eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi believes Andy Murray must finda way to keep his cool on the court, insisting Great Britain's number one is a"tortured perfectionist".
Murray faced Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open last month butdespite making a strong start, the Scot crumbled, surrendering the title in foursets and losing the last set 6-0.
It was as much Murray's temperament as his technique that let him down inMelbourne, with Djokovic claiming 12 of the last 13 games, and cruising tovictory against an increasingly frustrated opponent.
"He's a tortured perfectionist," said Agassi, speaking at the launch of his BILTby Agassi & Reyes range - an innovative line of fitness machines installed atChigwell's David Lloyd Leisure.

Andy Murray’s recent pledge in Australia to try to be more consistent week by week was left blowingin the desert sands when he suffered one of the most bizarre defeats of his career.
The world No 3 went down to a 6-1, 6-3 defeat against 18-year-old Croatian Borna Coric in the DubaiOpen, illustrating again a continuing difficulty to apply himself every time he goes on court.
In the wake of a performance which produced some truly humbling statistics, he found somesympathy on Thursday night from Andre Agassi, the American great who described him as a ‘torturedperfectionist’.

AGASSI holds court
Andre Agassi is one of the
world’s most iconic sporting
stars, so when Nick Dines got
the chance to meet the eight-
time Grand Slam tennis
champion in Chigwell, there
was no holding him back
WITHOUT the
spectacular
explosion of talent
seen through Messrs
Federer, Nadal and
Djokovic over the past decade, the
diminutive Andre Agassi would still be
considered perhaps the greatest tennis
player of all time in many eyes.
Boasting a highly decorated career,
littered with accolades and a prize money
bounty exceeding $30m, the now 44-year-
old belongs to tennis’ pantheon of great
champions, a select group of players to
have secured all four Grand Slam titles.
After flying in from his home in Las
Vegas to negotiate a rather stringent
airport customs encounter, followed by
that cruel mistress the M25, undeterred,
here he was, Andre Agassi in… Chigwell.
This was his inaugural visit to this
neck of the woods and he began,
lightheartedly, quipping: ‘Rumour has
it, I can’t afford to live around here.’
Playing host to Andre, those at
Chigwell’s Roding Lane David Lloyd
Leisure Club were the envy of many,
welcoming the tennis icon for the official
European launch of BILT by Agassi &
Reyes, his exciting state-of-the-art range
of gym fitness equipment.
With his UK visits known to be
extremely rare, this was quite the coup
to welcome Andre to Essex for his grand
unveiling. The feeling was mutual as
Andre was evidently thrilled to bring his
brand, established in 2012, to the masses
in what appears to be an ideal doubles
partnership with a pioneer in the UK’s
premium fitness sector.
Comprised of The Olympic Flat Bench,
The Change of Direction squat machine,
The Power Stride and The Quad, our
county’s fitness fanatics will be among
the first in the UK and Europe to benefit
from the very latest in gym innovation,
a mini-circuit range modeled on Agassi’s
own custom-made equipment,
painstakingly honed over two decades.
Under the guidance of his loyal fitness
coach, Gil Reyes, strength, conditioning
and safety proved the key factors behind
a productive 20-year
virtually injury-free
career. Subsequently, it’s
these core elements that
play an integral role behind
the creation of Andre’s
range of equipment,
providing ideal strength and
conditioning training across
all sports, helping beginners
to professionals.
‘It’s no secret that I wasn’t
the best athlete on the tennis
‘I had to work to find
ways to be better and

Before your first serve, join the resistanceD espite its proverbial showers, April is a celebratory time of year for tennis fans. For those of us who aren’t part of the diehard tennis community that plays during winter (either turning out for clubs or at exclusive indoor courts), the warmer weather and lighter evenings mean a return to clay, grass or AstroTurf to hit some balls.
If, like me, you are a fair-weather player, you’ll know how frustrating those first few games can be. Our strokes are just as rusty as our rackets; our serve-volley has as good as disappeared; and our cross-court forehand feels disappointingly alien. Yet it’s not motivation we lack: we’re desperate to improve, and fast, so we hit the court (and miss the balls) several times a week. The more time on court the better, right? Not necessarily – and certainly not for those who
haven’t leapt for a smash since last September. Even the friendliest game of tennis can involve stop-start and multidirectional movements – the stuff of hamstring and calf tears, particularly among those who don’t train these movements year round – not to mention lots of stress on your shoulders. So while I’d never dispute that you need to play tennis regularly to get better at tennis quickly, it’s also good to take a longer-term view: be patient and build up court time slowly over April and May. You may still not, come June, be able to eradicate the English summer rain, but it’s less likely that injury will stop play. It’s not just a calm approach to court time that will keep you in check this tennis season but also the incorporation of resistance training (where muscles are strengthened via the process of working against resistance, such as barbells, dumbbells or just body weight) into your weekly schedule. Not only has Andy Murray attributed much of his success over the past few years – not to mention his defined, muscular physique

You’ll have a far better season if you give yourself four weeks to resistance train two to three times per week and then drop the gym sessions down to twice weekly in May so that you have plenty of time left to play tennis. In terms of what to work on, I’d suggest strengthening hamstrings, calves, shoulders (particularly the group of muscles and tendons that work to stabilise the shoulder, called the rotator cuff), abdominals and also your grip. It’s best to consult a fitness instructor at your local gym and ask them to write a basic programme that suits your needs and can be done within an hour. Most gyms provide this service free of charge but it can depend on membership. Just be sure to ask them to update it every four to six weeks as your body will adapt and it’s best to keep it challenged if you want to see a consistent improvement.

Advice from Jenny Pacey and Wayne Gordon, aka Enigma and Doom from Gladiators Graze: Both Wayne and Jenny say that if you have three big meals per day, you’ll burn fewer calories than if you have six smaller ones,
since you burn calories as you digest.
Be wary of intermittent fasting: Jenny says: “This can tend to make you overeat in the evening and take on all your energy load just before you go to bed, then the only thing it can do is settle as fat.”
Breakfast like a king: Jenny says: “You’ve used carbs and protein overnight repairing and recovering, so eat things like eggs and oats for breakfast, then a big lunch and filter off portion sizes towards evening.”
Drink a litre of water first thing: “I do that every
morning and feel like I go from a wilted flower to someone in bloom,” says Jenny.
Shake it up: “I put all my carbs, fibre and some protein in the NutriBullet and make one shake,” says Wayne. paceandgo.co.uk
my day,” Agassi tells me, “but it certainly was for me, and it helped me outdo many other athletes who were better than me. I wasn’t the most flexible, I wasn’t the most agile. But I was always prepared and I was pretty strong.“I have this belief, it’s pretty simple – if you have a muscle and you make it stronger, you make it more capable, whatever you want to go and do.”
Despite this belief, however, it seems that even the famous baseline genius has had to slow down a little over recent years.“I’m not interested anymore in pushing myself in a way that gets me to accomplish something physically but then leaves me with more wear and tear – there’s been too much of that over the years,” he says. “Since I can’t do a lot of the stuff I would like to do, I just do the stuff I can do, and do it in a very different way. I will still lift [weights] four days a week, focusing on two muscle groups each time, and do three days of cardio. “But I can’t run and I can’t get on
– to regular resistance training, but former world number one Andre Agassi recently launched a range of 12 ergonomically designed pieces of gym equipment for tennis aficionados, BILT by Agassi & Reyes. The equipment, available at David Lloyd gyms, is the culmination of the years of experience of Agassi and long-term trainer Gil Reyes. It includes a cable machine called Quad that allows you to practise your tennis strokes against resistance, so strengthening the shoulder girdle and rotator cuffs in particular. There is also a Power Stride that forces you to work your leg muscles without putting undue pressure on the joints, and a bench press whose retractable arm helps keep the shoulder safe when you’re returning the bar to its stack after pushing (with chest and arms) a heavy weight.“I don’t know if strength training was important for everyone in
a bike with my hips, so I’ll do very low-impact stuff, like walking at 4-5mph at an incline of four to five per cent.” Oh and “you don’t have to be good”, says the 1992 Wimbledon champion: “You just have to be better than one person. So choose your opponents wisely. Then show discipline. The discipline of shot selection, not taking an unnecessary risk – there’s a difference between thinking you have to win every point, and letting your opponent lose every point.”
So there you have it. Personal advice that is well and truly from the top. If you’re to have a great tennis season, you’ll need discipline (to ease yourself back onto the court), discipline (to regularly resistance train in the gym) and more discipline (to curb your ego). Just don’t forget to enjoy yourself. Andre Agassi is launching his BILT by Agassi & Reyes fitness range, available at selected David Lloyd Leisure clubs (biltbyagassiandreyes.com)

Andy Murray has been urged to keep his cool
Agassi: Murray will not let up

Eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi believes Andy Murray must find
a way to keep his cool on the court, insisting Great Britain's number one is a
"tortured perfectionist".
Murray faced Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open last month but
despite making a strong start, the Scot crumbled, surrendering the title in four
sets and losing the last set 6-0.
It was as much Murray's temperament as his technique that let him down in
Melbourne, with Djokovic claiming 12 of the last 13 games, and cruising to
victory against an increasingly frustrated opponent.
"He's a tortured perfectionist," said Agassi, speaking at the launch of his BILT
