Military children serve too. They make many sacrifices as their parent or
parents serve our nation — frequent moves, multiple schools, family sepa-
rations due to training and deployment, living apart from extended family,
among others. In 1986 Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger designat-
ed April as “The Month of the Military Child” to recognize their many
contributions. Installations and communities around the country and the
world hold events to bring awareness to these young heroes. Some of
these special events scheduled for our area include:
Saturday, April 12, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm: Appreciation of the Military
Child at the USMC Museum at Quantico. Celebrate with kid-friendly ac-
tivities including puppet shows, book readings, a LEGO display and face
painting. "Chesty the Bulldog" will also be on site for photos opportuni-
ties.
Tuesday, April 15: Operation “Purple Up.” Wear purple on this day to
show support and thank military youth for their support and sacrifices.
Purple symbolizes all branches of the
military, as it is the combination of Army
green, Marine red, and Coast Guard,
Navy and Air Force blue. Post your pho-
tos to social media with the tag
#PurpleUp2014 and get the buzz going!
Saturday, April 26, 11:00 am – 2:00
pm: 7th Annual Children’s Fair, Smith
Gym Henderson Hall. Enjoy a day of fun-
filled activities, games, and crafts. See
page 3 for more information on this per-
ennial favorite Henderson Hall event.

Interested in finding a summer camp for your kids? The process can be exciting and overwhelming. There are so many choices – how do you choose? And once you’ve chosen how do you prepare your child (and yourself!) for the experience? Below are some helpful re-sources that will get your started:
> The American Camp Association website, http://www.campparents.org/, has a wealth of information for parents about camps: camp selection, readiness, child and youth develop-ment, and issues of importance to families. Their “Find a Camp” webpage, http://find.acacamps.org, steps you through many camp choices including those that specialize in specific special needs and programs for special populations such as “Children of Military.”
> Choosing a summer camp that is a good fit for your child may seem especially daunting if
your child has special needs. This article steps you through the process of researching the different types of camps, as well as benefits of camp, starting your camp search, doing your research, and the questions to ask: http://kidshealth.org/parent/system/ill/finding_camp_special_needs.html#
> Preparing your child with special needs for summer camp can take more pre-planning. Kid-shealth.org has a good article on that process, and can get you thinking about the issues that may need to be addressed: http://kidshealth.org/parent/firstaid_safe/outdoor/sending_child_camp.html
> Fairfax County Public Schools has an extensive list of summer camps, organized by disabil-ity type. And these camps are open to all, not just Fairfax County students; in fact many of the camps listed are located in Maryland: http://www.fcps.edu/cco/prc/resources/additional/summer_camps/.
> For military child-specific programs check out the Military OneSource webpage, Depart-ment of Defense Summer Camp Experiences, https://www.militaryonesource.mil/cyt?content_id=268111.
> The Center for Parent Information and Resources has listings for camps open to all kids, and also those for kids with disabilities: http://www.parentcenterhub.org/repository/camps/.

The Education Directory for Children with Special Needs (http://
apps.militaryonesource.mil/MOS/f?p=EFMP_DIRECTORY:HOME:0) provides mili-
tary families who have children with special needs the information they need to make
informed assignment decisions and easier transitions. It provides general information
about early intervention and special education services available on or near military in-
stallations in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Although designed for chil-
dren with special needs, this directory is also useful for any military family transition-
ing with school-age children. The directory assists in identifying school districts (on or
near an installation) responsible for the provision of educational services to military
children. Knowing the districts and schools is helpful when a family is considering
where to live - especially if they will reside off the installation. The Directory is de-
signed so that all the user has to do is select the state, and then the installation the
sponsor will be assigned to in order to get a list of the early intervention agencies and
school districts. Links then take them to the websites for early intervention agencies,
school districts and schools.
The directory consists of two components:
The Early Intervention Directory focusing on early intervention services for chil-
dren birth through 3 years old
The School-Age Directory focusing on education services for children with special
needs, 3 through 21 years old

Did you know that beneficiaries who receive care for chronic, high-risk/high-cost, catastrophic or terminal illnesses may receive TRICARE case management services at no extra cost? Case managers are usually nurses or social workers who can help patients and families figure out complex health care and support systems. This could be a huge help for families who qualify. Go to www.tricare.mil/CoveredServices/SpecialNeeds/CaseManagement to find more information and see if you qualify.

Frequently Asked Question
Question: How does the EFMP provide relocation assistance?
Answer: Once you receive orders, please contact the Henderson Hall EFMP office for assis-
tance. The Henderson Hall EFMP office will coordinate with the gaining/losing EFMP office to
assist you in connecting services between duty stations. This “warm hand-off" (WHO) pro-
cess ensures a smooth and seamless Permanent Change of Station (PCS)
transition. Prior to your PCS from Henderson Hall, please complete
the EFMP Family Transition Checklist (http://mccshh.com/pdf/
EFMP_Transition_Checklist.pdf, relocation (resources are included on this
link) and then forward the information to your Henderson Hall EFMP Fam-
ily Case Worker (FCW). As part of the EFMP WHO process and in order
to ensure the continuum of care for your EFM, your FCW will review your
completed checklist and then forward it to the gaining installation and to
your new Family Case Worker so that he/she can assist you in finding the appropriate re-
sources and support services at your new duty station.

Many parents struggle with discipline techniques and strategies to manage their children’s negative behaviors. Other parents wish they could encour-age their children to finish chores, homework or other necessary tasks with-out them whining or complaining. The 1-2-3 Magic Discipline Class, offered by New Parent Support Program can help. This class, designed for parents with children ages 2-12, teaches parents consistent and effective discipline techniques. Classes are offered every other month. Please call 703-614-7204/7205 to register.
