Introducing Keith ProctorJack of Hearts

that their behaviour seems to come straight from the heart. He says: “What better subject to paint than children? They pick up on body language very early and use it well. I try to convey this body language in my work, through simple everyday situations, emphasising the humour or pathos.” another important element in keith’s work is outdoor life. He himself has many happy memories of his own childhood, playing outside, getting grubby and scruffy and loving every minute. His intention is to take us back to our own childhood. He says: “A child caught in a moment of thought; in the moment of making the memories that shape us and make us who we are… it is those simple precious things that last just seconds that I try to capture and thereby to hold on to forever.”

Long established and revered as one of the nation’s outstanding figurative artists, Keith Proctor is a superb addition to our portfolio this season. keith’s nostalgic oil paintings take the viewer back in time, to what he describes as “the more simple world of childhood”. His inspirational work conveys the natural spontaneity and charm of childhood with a rare combination of technical skill and intense affection. Many of keith’s works are inspired by his youngest son, Jack. Being a father to four boys has given him a unique insight into his subject. He loves the fact that children are so natural and instinctive and the way

“To combine a life of painting with spending time with Jack is a real joy. Like all young children he is a free spirit without the weight of the world upon him yet. As we grow up life shows on us all, but kids are truly natural and that’s what I want to show in the paintings of Jack, a lovely little boy doing little boy things.”

keith has been painting for over thirty years, first with watercolours and pastels then later moving on to oils. as a child he was influenced by his father who told him: “never draw a straight line; always break lines up when you sketch and paint - make your marks interesting”. advice that the young keith took to heart and has never forgotten.

keith always begins a piece with a charcoal sketch onto a pre-coloured cotton canvas, concentrating on balance and composition before he starts to paint. He keeps a very large mirror behind him and glances over his shoulder regularly to check things out from a different angle. His application of paint is very rapid and he uses a palette of only five colours. He says: “it is bold confident brush work that makes things work for me - once i slow down and start picking at the work i know that fundamentally the image is finished and it is at this moment that i start to hear my father in my head shouting “Stop - leave it alone!”.

THE COOLEST ARTIST ON

THE PLANET

Todd White is one of those people who simply seem to have it all. Looks, charm, wit, talent and a distinctive style and down to earth personality that have won him an international reputation.

over in the States he is a household name, and he also has a large and devoted army of admirers in the Uk. considering the breadth of his success and the adulation that follows him wherever he goes, todd has remained remarkably self-deprecating, never taking his collectors for granted. after his last sell out Uk tour, he had this to say to his British collectors and friends:

We are very much looking forward to Todd’s next UK tour when he flies in from Texas this October.

From a recent article in american ‘Boulevard’ magazine: “todd captures restaurant, night and Hollywood scenes with contrasting colours serving the viewers’ eyes as those in his stolen scenes serve or are served - wine, coffee, cigarettes, cigars, martinis and sex. He creates timeless scenes of diverse attraction, of known intimacy.

the smoke that rises from their lips, the drinks that linger at their fingertips, the clothing that adorns their bodies and the crowd created

among lovers, friends, patrons and co-workers all speak certain poetry. Each character depicts the subtleties of what one shows and what one hides. an asymmetrical face tells of an asymmetrical life, of how life wears and how we wear life - what we choose to carry in our hands and on our faces -- how we wear ourselves, what smoke and color we stand in.”

this was just one of a spate of articles dedicated to todd and his work. never far from the media spotlight, he has a list of celebrity collectors to die for including Sharon Stone, p Diddy, catherine Zeta Jones and Sylvester Stallone and an uncanny ability to stand out in a crowd. His fame and popularity was highlighted yet again when a piece of his work was described by the main character in the cBS tV series ‘Beverley Hills Cop’ as “a hundred thousand dollar todd white”. the producers had contacted todd to ask if they could use one of his paintings because Barry Sonnenfeld, the director of ‘Men in Black’ and ‘get Shorty’, is such a huge fan.

todd’s has also attracted media attention for his philanthropic work Since he established ‘The Todd White Art Project’ he has brought huge reward into the lives of thousands of american schoolchildren, opening the door to creativity and providing them with the materials to express themselves through art.

todd’s paintings captivate people with a strong and intriguing narrative. they often invoke laughter and demand repeated viewings. By revealing his subjects’ innermost feelings he creates timeless scenes of attraction and intimacy. Beneath the exaggerated features and textured skin of his characters there is truth – although sometimes it can be a little skewed! His subjects come from the everyday world, but his perspective is so unusual that he alters the way we perceive people and the roles we play around each other. He studies body language, using its nuances to capture the subtleties of what people show and hide, so when you next come to one of his shows, be careful what you give away….

in addition to the natural environment Sherree was deeply impressed by the artistic life of St ives. the St ives School of painting is now well known and credited as one of the Uk’s most exciting modern artistic movements. it was established in the historic porthmeor studios in 1938, but it was when the war broke out in 1939 and Barbara Hepworth and Ben nicholson moved in that the future began to take shape.

St ives quickly became a key outpost for the abstract avant-garde movement and after the war many young, pioneering artists gathered in the area. the term ‘St ives School’ has become particularly associated with this group of artists which includes such familiar names as terry Frost and patrick Heron. of course by the time Sherree was attracted to this area, the cast of characters and the style of artwork had changed, yet the spirit of the St ives School still remained, as it does today, and she mined a rich seam of knowledge, inspiration and technical skill.

RendezvousS h e r r e e V a l e n t i n e D a i n e S

The first summer after she graduated from art college, sherree moved down to Cornwall, eager to immerse herself in the south-West’s well documented and thriving artistic community. Blessed with the best of British weather, she travelled around the enchanting harbours and fishing villages, painting the impossibly blue skies, beautiful countryside and the children on the beaches. This experience marked the beginning of her love of painting in a seaside setting.

For many years I have felt drawn to the sea both personally and artistically, and it has

been a key element in my work.

Children on the beach seem to radiate

a happy innocence and I love to paint these

timeless images.

”“

Sherree’s beautiful new

collection demonstrates

once again her mastery of

the human form. She says: “For any figurative artist life studies – the painting of a human figure from observation of a live model - are an integral part of the artistic process. in order to paint the human form with any degree of veracity one needs to understand the basics. From the technicalities of form, shape and scale to the finer details of muscle tone and how the body moves in relation to itself, every component of the composition must be consistently described, whether in a realistic or more abstract style. whether the study is of a reclining nude or a fully clothed dancer or musician or a child playing on the beach, the same rules apply.” Sherree continues to be one of our finest artists. Despite the ever-changing demands of artistic fashion and a fickle contemporary art market, she has never compromised in her artistic aims and

values, and as a result has achieved a formidable status in the art world. in her own words: “In terms of my reputation I do feel that I have been quite fortunate. once your work makes it into major galleries and people start to sit up and take notice, you know that you are making an impact. This may sound a little strange, but I think I’m seen as a genuine painter, someone who buys into the whole concept of observation, interpretation, beauty, form, compositional balance, and uses the trusted medium of oils on canvas. This perhaps sets me apart from some artists at work today, and makes me appear to be a traditionalist. And insofar as I adhere to these traditional artistic values, I suppose I am. But I do operate strictly within the parameters of modern life, painting decisive moments from rugby matches or producing portraits of TV presenters in front of cameras! – In a way that I hope, believe, will continue to communicate with a contemporary audience.”

sherree says: “Although I am generally described as a figurative artist, in many ways the setting for my figures is as important as they are. As an impressionist at heart, I find myself attracted to the way the colours shift and change with the passage of time throughout the day.

nostalgic material, particularly at the beach. although my children are now grown up, they still often feature in my work in an earlier incarnation of themselves; the images become crystallised memories that mean a great deal to me personally.”

“My own family has provided the inspiration for many of my compositions. when my four children were small, i would always take my camera and my sketch pad with me when we went out on sunny days, and over the years i have gathered a wealth of

to her great surprise, she has confessed to enjoying these events immensely; meeting collectors, hearing their stories and discussing what her work means to them and to her has been both a great pleasure and a wonderfully affirming experience. She has also painted in front of live audiences including on board Queen elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 and attended celebrity events such as a recent fundraising dinner at Highclare castle with the cast of Downtown abbey (top left).

over the last two years, sherree has been on the move! Although she has never been one to seek out the limelight, the limelight does have a tendancy to seek her out, and she has finally succumbed to the host of invitations from the nation’s galleries.

“The Face of Modern British Impressionism”

each of Barry’s expressive scenes is brimming with emotion and atmosphere, evoked through his distinctive use of intense colours and bold textural contrasts, yet it takes more than just the ability to paint to keep an artist at the forefront of the contemporary art scene, so we asked him about some of the elements of his work that make it so special.

How do you choose your subject matter? while landscapes are close to my heart i have a number of other subjects which are of interest too, yet i seem to have a knack of painting “moody” skies that people relate to and therefore try to include them in most subjects that i paint, landscapes, seascapes, and urban scenes. in all of these i do not feel obliged to paint the colours that i see but interpret the scene as the mood takes me; they therefore vary from vibrant yellows and reds to dark, almost apocalyptic shades, grey, indigo blue, green and black.

How do you create your extraordinary sense of light? over the years through experiment one’s methodology develops and i have found that through the application of multiple varied glazes one can achieve a brilliance that appears to gives a painting a genuine sense of radiance, sometimes rendering it almost luminous.

How would you describe your style and technique?

Minimal and contemporary with a touch of tradition. i’m happy to use any implement - a brush, a knife, a scraper - to achieve the effect that i am looking for.

Do you work every day? i’m not happy if i miss a day in the studio, and that includes christmas Day! Most weeks i spend seven days chained to the easel unless i am on a walk looking for a landscape to sketch or paint or visiting a gallery.

Do you have a favourite piece or pieces? i do have a weakness for seascapes and estuary inlets. i lived in cornwall in the late 1970s alongside the river gannel - white sands together with the big skies, big canvasses covered in a calm azure blue or storm clouds brewing in dramatic indigo, quite beautiful! this would perhaps go down as my most satisfying type of subject matter.

Who would you cite as your creative influences? without doubt turner and his skies and whistler’s nocturne scenes.

What is your preferred medium? oil, simply because in my view you cannot produce the same depth and authentic reflections in any other medium.

Does your personality come across in your work? i am a typical arian! a little selfish with my time and never fully satisfied with whatever i do, always prepared to change and never frightened by exploration. Does that come across...?

Are you self taught or did you have formal training? ever since my childhood i have drawn and painted, but my formal training was in chemistry, although i had a strong interest in the making of studio pottery and obtained a First class Ba Honours degree in tableware Design with ceramics. gradually painting became first a hobby and then a profession.

Do you have any specific aims or ambitions? in the execution of painting happy accidents occur and hopefully one can sometimes turn these into something new. i will always be an experimenter and i am always aware that subjects come and go therefore i am always prepared – who knows what new direction is around the corner (no pun intended!).

What do you get out of painting? other than great personal satisfaction and enjoyment it is very uplifting to know that somebody somewhere likes my work enough to live with it.

Can you describe your creative process? i first prepare my canvas with three coats of gesso. this gives me the right amount of absorbency allowing the oil to soak and dry out at the correct rate for me. i then rub in a thinned down wash of colour (dependent on the scene to be painted) over the whole canvas which helps to unify the finished painting. working from sketches i then rough in the scene to be painted with a mixture of colour again dependent on the subject matter. the sky usually follows and this is carried out in stages as i lay down the over glazing. the foreground, especially in the case of my recent landscapes, is developed with the use of the brush then over painted many times with a palette knife until the desired textural effect is achieved.

“I genuinely don’t know what inspires me - it is something that comes from within and feels like a gift.”

their individual stories are as evident on the london pavements as they are on the new york sidewalks! the cityscape has become a hugely important genre over the last few years, establishing itself as a contemporary rival to the classical rural landscape.while this development is due in part to the increasing importance of urban style and the culture of 21st century city living, artistic acknowledgement must go to Henderson.

whilst visually very different, both cities offer an architectural treasure-trove representing a visual history of each nation as it has evolved over the last 200 years, with beautiful historic buildings jostling for position with the sleek lines of the glass and steel design feats of the present day. whilst their skylines are somewhat different, they are equally a hybrid of old and new, and

So says Henderson Cisz when talking about two of his favourite cities which contrast so strongly with one another in some ways, yet are so similar in others. For his latest London release, Henderson has chosen to feature one of the world’s most historic landmarks, the Palace of Westminster, while for New York it is the dynamic No 1 Times Square which takes centre stage. On the surface it would seem that hundreds of years separate the construction of these iconic landmarks, but surprisingly, this is not the case.

He is the winner of multiple awards including Best Up and Coming Artist, Best Selling Published Artist and the coveted John Solomon Trophy, which is awarded annually to the artist judged to have made the most impact on the art market; official recognition that his work has been both successful and immensely influential in the world of fine art. Such is the global demand for his work that both his original paintings and his published editions are exported to all four corners of the world.

“While I aim to portray individual elements of each city - architecture, population, culture -I also strive to convey this sense of ‘city as icon’.“

as the palace of westminster holds such an important place in our nation’s history it is commonly thought that it has stood for centuries. in fact, the original medieval palace was destroyed by a fire in 1834 and fully rebuilt in 1870. this was during the Victorian gothic revival years, which saw a resurgence in enthusiasm for forms and shapes used in the architecture of the middle ages in stark contrast to the neoclassical style prevalent at the time. amazingly, while we think of new york as an ultra-modern metropolis and london as an incredibly old city steeped in history, it is hard to believe that only seventy years separates the construction of these two uniquely stunning buildings!

‘Henderson achieves such arresting interpretations by creating much of his preliminary work out on location.’

fabian’s latest collection reflects his outstanding status both as an artist and as a major global entity.

all artists move and progress on their artistic journeys and Fabian is no exception to this. over the years he has explored many different paths in his search for greater self expression and artistic truth. His new collection brings together a broad range of figurative inspirations, from the geisha of Japan’s flower towns to the couples who haunt the night clubs of Buenos aires, all with a story to tell of their disparate and intriguing lives.

Fabian is the recipient of many awards and accolades, the most recent of which are the Artist of the Year award 2014 by the Academy of Italian Artists and, Art Tour International Magazine Contemporary Master Award 2014.

Such is the power of his oeuvre and his influence on the world stage, that Fabian has been the instigator of a new movement in the art world, which assures his place at the forefront of 21st century art for many years to come.

Neo-Emotionalism - this telling phrase was used to title his latest best-selling book - means placing the importance of emotion above all other considerations and becoming one with your subject. Fabian describes painting in this way as liberating, and believes that the viewer will sense and relate to this outpouring of emotional energy onto the canvas.

JENNINE PARKERt h e r o u g h w i t h t h e s m o o t h

Drawing and sculpting male and female figures goes back centuries to when we first discovered the rewards of capturing the living world around us, and I find the history, culture and artistry of the form gives me all the inspiration I need - the concept of male and female so different, but one and the same.

Drawing a live model is an extremely important part of my work; the sketches do not have to be perfect as you can capture so much of the way the body moves, and the shapes, forms and lines it creates. these quick, expressive sketches often mark the first stage on my creative path.

“Nature oozes with fascinating textures

and forms which i like to explore...”

Jennine says:

Jennine Parker is passionate about sculpture. This passion originates in her fascination with the human form.

There are times when I sketch the concept of an idea, but sometimes I just need to sculpt without too much preparatory work as I know exactly what I want to achieve in my head. I don’t always need to sketch as I am always thinking and creating ideas in my mind. However, these three sculptures, ‘Empathy’, ‘Purity’ and ‘Divine’, emerged from a life drawing session.

I started by constructing an armature - a framework around which the sculpture could be built. I always start in this way as the framework provides much needed structure and stability, especially when a material such as clay is being used as the medium, as in the case of these pieces.

Once this base became as hard as leather, I used it as the armature to sculpt the figure upon, pressing in natural debris and pitted stone to create the earthy sense of natural erosion. I worked a fusion with the smooth fluid figure so the textural transition from rough to smooth takes the viewer on a journey through both the visual and the tactile senses.

I love taking lots of photographs of interesting textures and patterns which inform the finished work. Nature of course oozes with fascinating textures and forms which I like to explore and translate in my own way.

i also work closely with a photographer and model. while the photographer shoots i sketch, so that i end up with multiple versions of the same image to work from. i paint a lot of work in oil and acrylic, using different materials and substances to experiment with the concepts of erosion and texture that i wish achieve in my sculpture. i enjoy working in oil as it gives a transparent feel to my work and i believe the paintings that i create complement my collections of sculpture.
