There is a certain satisfaction in creating something yourself, and food is no exception – in fact it’s rather the opposite. We’re many who love putting a taste of home in a jar.

“People are growing more and more conscious of how we use our resources. It shows in all kinds of ways – in window gardening, in making your own jam or simply in deciding not to throw away the apples that are going a bit brown, but make chutney instead. HEMSMAK is our way of celebrating all this creativity, as well as making it even easier and more fun”, says Creative Leader Sigga Heimis.

The HEMSMAK limited edition collection consists of lots and lots of jars and tins and buckets and bottles that can be filled with all your favourites. As icing on the cake there’s labels, tags, string, bags and decoration paper for everything from frozen blueberries to the perfect going away present.

Starting in August 2015 you will be able to find all of this under one roof.

FOR THE LOVE OF GETTING INTO A PICKLE

Salad in a jar, homemade lemonade, tomatoes in spiced olive oil... There really is no end to the list of tasty delicacies people make out of everything from home-grown to leftovers. We love to be creative with food and add our own personal touch to what we make – and to what we give away. Because, even if there’s nothing wrong with flowers and chocolates, few gifts beat a homemade treat. And it doesn’t have to be complicated. Make a super easy strawberry jam or your own version of kimchi, add a tag on a string and you’re ready to go.

GET IN THE MIX OF HEMSMAK

The HEMSMAK limited edition collection is easy to use, and just as easy to make personal. Take the tin plated steel buckets, for example. They are perfect for storing dried foods but just as good as shiny give aways. The versatility has been one of the aims of the collection, says Creative Leader Sigga Heimis:“Mix jars and tins and bags and fill them with whatever you like. Put a label on, or ten. Or just dig out an old jar and give it new life with a pretty piece of string and a colourful gift tag.”

A PASSION FOR PAPERWhy stop at making jars and tins? To help organising all the good stuff, or just turn your jar into something extra, we decided to do tags and labels too. To our help we had the talented designers Hildur Sigurdardottir and Olof Birna Gardarsdottir at Reykjavík Letterpress who besides their love of food and homemade share a genuine passion for paper.“The labels are not only meant to keep track of the ingredients in every jar, but also to mark the date when it’s made. If you want, you can put different sized labels on each jar – one with ingredients, another with a recipy and one with a personal message”, says Hildur Sigurdardottir.

The tags and labels are indeed practical, like the adhesive ones where you mark the production date just by circling the number of the month and date, but they also

open up for your own take. Some bring back memories of great-grandma’s kitchen shelves while others add up to date colour and a playful edge to every kind of jar, tin or bucket. Olof Birna Gardarsdottir’s happy with the result:“We hope to make it more fun to label jars and containers when you’re done making all kinds of delicacies, and to make it easier for people to turn their homemade creations into decorative gifts.”

The HEMSMAK paper bags, also designed by Reykjavík Letterpress, add to the fun. The same goes for the cellophane bags and the white or black felt-tip pens that’s part of the HEMSMAK limited edition collection. Write directly on the jar or tin for a labelling that can be washed off, or on the tags for a permanent result.
