May Value : Endurance
During the month of May, we
will be discussing what
endurance means to the
children and how endurance
can support and help them
with their learning. Children
will be reminded of strategies
to help them when they get
stuck and to persevere when
things get tough.
The value of endurance
highlights the necessity of
making mistakes in order to
learn. We want every child to constantly try their best, to accept
that learning has challenges within it but to not give up when things
get difficult. Endurance is about having a go, not giving up and
keeping a positive attitude.
In assembly, we will be sharing stories where the moral is to reach
your goals through endurance, determination and perseverance,
and hearing about endurance demonstrated by people in the
past.
You can demonstrate endurance by:
•Keeping going and not giving up.
•Having a go at a task even if it is hard.
•Believing in yourself.
Congratulations to Miss Kirby on
completing the London Marathon
demonstrating endurance.

What does the quote below mean?
What does it mean to ‘bear a hard thing’? Discuss.
Very little in life can be achieved without endurance – do you agree with this?
From the Headteacher
Dear Lanchester parents,
This is the first of many contributions I'll be making to the school newsletter and am very pleased to
do so.
My first three weeks as Principal of the school have been extremely enjoyable and positive. I've
very much enjoyed meeting many of you at the school gates and at the 'meet and greet' sessions
that we've organised - thank you to those of you who were able to attend. It's already been
useful to hear your views about the school and ideas for improving it and I will be following this
meeting up with termly parent forums which will start in the second half of this term. Of course, the
very best part of the job has been meeting your children, which has been delightful - they are
really lovely and a great credit to you all.
There is a wonderful group of adults working here at Lanchester, who show great commitment and
hard work. They are constantly aiming to provide your children with the best, safest learning
experiences that they can. I have been really impressed with the positivity and willingness to learn
and improve that the staff have shown. I have no doubt whatsoever, that the school will build its
quality and reputation and become the outstanding place of learning that your children
deserve.

Principal

Using our value for this month, children have been encouraged to demonstrate their understanding of their
learning. We have asked the children to think carefully about what it means to be understanding and to be
understood by others. We also encouraged the children to think about the choices they make and to
understand that how they choose to talk to others, and to act towards others, will affect how others respond
to them
Moon
Class
In Moon
class, we
have
been
thinking
about
understanding as a value. We
now know that to be able to
learn, you need to understand
Star Class
In Star class we
learned that to
help us
understand,
we need to
listen to the
other person
talking.
Sun Class
In Sun class
we have
been
learning that
when we
understand,
learning
becomes
fun.
Mercury Class
In Mercury Class the children
demonstrated this month’s
value when they worked
together to perform Goldilocks
and the Three Bears, They
showed real understanding
towards one another,
swapping roles so everyone got
the opportunity to play the
character that they most wanted to be.
Venus Class
In Venus class we
made a thought shower
about words which are
related to understanding
Jupiter Class
In Jupiter Class we made a list of some wonderful
words to describe what understanding means to us.
Listening
Feeling
Reasoning
Appreciating
Empathy
Caring
Saturn Class
In Saturn class we discussed our value of ‘Understanding’.
These are some of the ways we interpreted our value.
“Understanding means knowing the truth about something.“
Mariya
“Understanding means knowing the meaning of something
like a word.” Amrita.
“Understanding means explaining how you worked out a
problem.” Harry W.
“You can ask questions to help you show your
understanding.” Thandeka
“Understanding is when you help people see a different point
of view.” Nathan
Neptune
In Neptune we discussed the importance of
‘understanding’ and ways to support ourselves when
we misunderstand something. Some of us then had a
go at writing an acrostic poem. Use care
Never say bad words
Don’t leave injured people out
Endure others
Respect and be fair
Say good things
Think for others and show tolerance
Awareness of others.
Never judge or underestimate others.
Do amazing things to help others
In your life good things and bad things happen.
Negative thoughts towards others isn’t good.
Grasp a task.
Pluto
Pluto carried out a class
circle time where they discussed
the meaning of understanding. The
children were able to discuss the
different situations they face inside
and outside of school where they
have shown great understanding.
Pluto were then able to discuss how
we can be understanding to one
another in class.
Understanding – a review of last month’s value

YR3 Pluto
Pluto have settled back into school really well. They have been working so hard on their new topic of
Rainforests where they have been writing setting descriptions and have re-told the story of The Great
Kapok Tree. Pluto have also begun their Ukulele lessons which they are really enjoying. We are
looking forward to working with an artist to create some Rainforest art work before half-term which
we are hoping to display in the foyer. Well done Pluto keep up the good work!
YR3 Neptune
Neptune have got off to a good start this summer term. We are enjoying learning about the
Rainforest and have linked this into our English lessons when writing a story based on this topic and
thinking about what we might see and hear. We have especially enjoyed starting our swimming
lessons at the leisure center, as well as taking part in scooter training. Year 3 are going to be creating
some Rainforest artwork within the next few weeks which we will all enjoy!
YR2 Saturn
Saturn class has been focused after the Easter break on their learning. We have been looking back
at our number work in Maths. We have been thinking about the strategies we can use to solve
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division questions. In English we have started on our topic of
“Where the wild things are”, which follows the story of Max and his adventures in a new and different
land. We have been making our own wild thing character descriptions using lots of adjectives, noun
phrases and similes to make our descriptions come alive in our minds. We have been most excited
about our art lessons and using our outside environment to inspire and help us in making Richard
Long influenced art. In Inquiry lessons we are comparing parts of Kenya and the UK, looking at the
similarities and differences between the two countries. We will be soon taking advantage of our
spring weather and sowing seeds to look at plant growth and observe how they grow in our science
lessons. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank all our parents and their continued
support in our learning.
YR2 Jupiter
We hope you had a lovely break and it’s good to see every single
child motivated and looking forward to learning new things and
enjoying school. Thank you all for encouraging your child/children
to do their best. As you know we have SATs coming up soon and
we continue to support the children in preparation for these
alongside all our other learning. The children have been
particularly inspired by the life and work of the British land artist,
Richard Long and have produced some fantastic work of their
own. The children have been working very hard and I’m very
proud of all their efforts. We would like to thank all the parents who
have volunteered to support children in school with their reading.
Many Thanks - Jupiter team
‘Circle of friends’ inspired by Richard Long’s work

YR1 Mars & Mercury
Mercury and Venus Classes
The Summer Term has got off to a flying start in Year 1. The children have been mastering
multiplication in Maths. In their English lessons they have been developing their editing
skills, correcting their own punctuation and spellings with their purple polishing pens.
They loved searching for signs of spring on their visit to Cassiobury Park and, with the wonderful
support of our parent volunteers, they spotted daffodils, bluebells, bumble bees and butterflies.
They were so inspired by the beautiful blossom they saw in the park, they created some stunning
art work for a new display on the four seasons.
.
Moon Stars and Sun Class
This term in Reception we are learning about minibeasts! The first week back we went on a minibeast hunt; we used i-
pads and we looked for minibeasts all around our school! We found spiders, worms and even bees. We took pictures,
videos and we looked for information on the web! We continue our learning by attending an amazing and very
enjoyable workshop about animals and the jungle! We also made different micro-habitats for all the minibeasts that we
are learning about!
We cannot wait for the rest of May!
