As always, this newsletter takes a look at a few of the projects that we consider to be most relevant, fascinating or simply of interest to the like-minded people that read our publication.

Hence, you will see this edition go to southern Spain (page 10) to have a look at how storage tanks coated over 18 years ago for Italian customer, Decal, still remain in perfect condition today. Or up to the Faroe Islands, where our HEMPACORE coatings are being used to provide intumescent protection in one of Europe’s toughest climates, while the article on page 8 details another feat of modern engineering in which Hempel is playing a crucial role, namely the installation of Vestas’ huge 8 MW wind turbine in Jutland, Denmark, conceived to dramatically reduce the cost of offshore energy production.

As always, this newsletter is an opportunity to show you some important new developments taking place inside Hempel. One of the most exciting innovations on the horizon at the moment is summarised in the article on page 7 about our recently patented AvantGuard® activated zinc technology coating, which we are confident represents a significant breakthrough in anti-corrosive steel protection and of which you will hear much more about in the coming months.

Once again, these few pages attempt to outline the innovations and developments taking place at the moment in Hempel’s world, a world which you form a significant part of, just as much as we who work here do. And that is why we hope you enjoy reading all about it.

We are extremely pleased to extend a warm welcome on these pages to Darren Lowe, who joined Hempel UK in May 2014 as Area Sales Manager for Protective Coatings. He is happily married to Katie, who runs a nursery, and has one daughter, Kiera, now going into 6th Form College.

Darren comes to Hempel following years of experience in the paint business: after leav-ing school, he spent 12 years working as Quality Manager and later General Manager of two off-site blasting and coating enter-prises, running paint shops for all sizes of contracts from small vessels to large, thou-sands of tonnes structural contracts.

In 2004, Darren changed jobs to become an Area Manager, still within the paint sector, where he was responsible for quite a large geographical area. Darren was very successful in that role and initial turnover practically quadrupled within 4 years up to the economic downturn that slowed industry across the UK and Europe in 2008. Immediately prior to coming to Hempel, Darren had been moved up to a role as Strategic Account Manager, handling accounts with large fabricators and a turnover of more than £7 million.

Darren has supplied intumescent, anti-corrosion and decorative paints for a number of significant landmark pro-jects in the UK, including the Cable Car across the Thames and the vast majority of the stadia used in the London 2012 Olympics. The scope of supply involved following the project all the way from in-ception, through specification definition, production, erection and finally on-site painting.

We asked him how he sees his role in Hempel: “I will be working to maintain and extend the current area and also to build up sales of primers and intumescents to both fabricators and applicators”. With regard to how he plans to achieve that, Darren is clear about his approach: “You need to be honest and reliable but most of all, you need to make friends with the customer. Do not take anything for granted and always give it your best shot. That way, you earn respect from both the customer and your colleagues.”

TOPIC | Hempel protects 2014 World Cup stadiums

Although the 2014 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off on 12th June when host nation Brazil played Croatia, Hempel had been actively involved in the country’s intense stadium preparation programme for the previous 3 years.

Martifer supplied the metal roofing structures for three of the venues where World Cup matches took place, namely the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador da Bahia, the Estádio do Castelão in Fortaleza, and the Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre. The metal structures for all 3 stadiums were manufactured and fully coated in Portugal, before being shipped to Brazil and erected on site. In order to protect the structures during their ocean crossing, a system was selected based on HEMPADUR FAST DRY 15560 followed by a topcoat of HEMPATHANE HS 55610.

HEMPADUR FAST DRY 15560 has a reputation among steel constructors as an extremely reliable product that combines excellent mechanical resistance with high productivity, instrumental in this case as Martifer needed to build and coat a total of 6,220 tonnes for the 3 stadiums. Furthermore, given that the project was implemented on either side of the Atlantic,

Hempel was a natural choice for this project. Being a global paint supplier, it was possible to assist our customer efficiently both in Portugal, for the initial build and in Brazil for subsequent touch up and repair work after the long crossing.

Hempel supplied approximately 40,000 litres of HEMPADUR ZINC 17360 + HEMPADUR FAST DRY 15560 + HEMPATHANE HS 55610 for the new Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador da Bahia, with a capacity for 55,000 spectators, which was awarded the 2013 European Steel Design Award by ECCS (European Convention for Construction Steelwork).

A further 20,000 litres were applied during the renovation of the Estádio do Castelão, also known as the Gigante da Boa Vista, in Fortaleza, which now has a capacity of 67,037 spectators. The reconstructed roof covers 34,000 m2, of which 28,000 m2 provide welcome shade while 6,000 m2 of transparent corrugated polycarbonate ensure plenty of natural light.

The Arena do Grêmio stadium was opened in Porto Alegre in December 2012 and has a capacity of 60,540 spectators, making it one of the most modern venues in Latin America. Like the two previous stadiums, the 30,000 litre anti-corrosion system employed was designed to meet ISO standard 12944.

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP BRAZIL Stadiums protected by Hempel

We are proud to introduce our new HEMPADUR AvantGuard® , a portfolio of three new anti-corrosive zinc primers. Based on unique, patented AvantGuard® technology, HEMPADUR AvantGuard® coatings provide better anti-corrosion protection than zinc epoxies without AvantGuard® .

Zinc coatings are used to protect industrial structures and equipment in C4 and C5 corrosive conditions, where saltwater and high humidity corrode unprotected steel. Based on new, patented AvantGuard® technology, HEMPADUR AvantGuard® activated zinc primers are developed for a range of industries and applications, from offshore oil & gas platforms to wind turbines.

AvantGuard® is the result of an extensive R&D programme run specifically to solve an issue discovered in Hempel’s labs in 2007: only one-third of the zinc in a zinc epoxy primer is utilised for galvanic protection.

Pernille Lind Olsen, Group Protective Product Director at Hempel, comments: “AvantGuard® is perhaps the biggest change in anti-corrosive technology since zinc coatings were first introduced during the 1960s. The technology gives customers strong anti-corrosion performance in a coating that has high mechanical strength.” AvantGuard® uses hollow glass spheres

and a proprietary activator to activate more zinc in the coating, ensuring a significantly higher galvanic effect than zinc primers without the AvantGuard® technology. The technology also enables barrier and inhibitor protection, and so combines three protective effects in one. Furthermore, the unique formulation im-proves the coating’s mechanical strength, which is essential for applications with, for example, extreme temperature and humid-ity fluctuations. “In a standard zinc epoxy protective system, the zinc primer is the weakest mechanical point and, as a result, cracks can form in the coating as the steel expands and contracts under extreme conditions,” says Josep Palasi, Hempel R&D Director. “AvantGuard® zinc coatings are different, as the glass spheres and sub-products that result from the unique zinc activation process stop micro-cracks as soon as they form. This, we can say, makes the coating self-healing.”

The increased protection and durability has been proven in extensive Hempel tests, in-cluding salt spray tests (ISO 12944 part 6), cyclic corrosion tests (ISO 20340 - NOR-SOK M-501 revision 6) and thermal cycling resistance tests (NACE cracking test and Hempel’s welding test).

HEMPADUR AvantGuard® primers can be applied using the same application tech-niques as standard zinc epoxies.

“In our tests, HEMPADUR AvantGuard® shows a high tolerance to different applica-tion conditions, such as high temperatures and humidity, and we even see high crack resistance when the coating is applied with an excessive dry film thickness,” Pernille Lind Olsen says. The HEMPADUR AvantGuard® series cur-rently includes three different zinc primers and was released worldwide on the 23 Sep-tember 2014.

Hempel is continuing to work on solutions that utilise new activated zinc technology.

TOPIC | Hempel supplies paint for the world’s largest wind turbine

Product Data Sheets are available for more detailed information but please do not hesitate to contact your nearest Hempel representative to discuss how HEMPADUR FAST DRY 4541A can be combined with other products to provide a customised and highly efficient system for your project.

TOPIC | HEMPADUR FAST-DRY 4541A

Hempel is the wind energy industry’s leading supplier of paints and has supplied the paint for virtually all wind turbine manufacturers and all types of wind turbine components since 1980.

So it is not surprising that Vestas, the world leader in wind energy, has chosen Hempel to provide the corrosion protection coating system for the prototype of their huge new V-164-8.0 MW turbine.

This turbine has been specifically designed to reduce the cost of offshore energy production. Further, it is the product of a joint venture between Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the offshore segment. There is, therefore, a need for high performance coating systems that can withstand the harsh environment.

Large wind turbines with high output reduce investments because the cost of installation, operation and maintenance is reduced and fewer turbines can produce the same amount of energy.

Hempel supplies paint for the world’s largest wind turbine

The V164-8.0 MW turbine can supply electricity corresponding to the averageconsumption of approximately 7,500 Euro-pean households. The tower is 140 m high, the blades are 80 m long, and the rotor area is over 21,000 m2 - equivalent to nearly three football fields.

Hempel has supplied primer HEMPADUR UNIQ 4774A and topcoat HEMPATHANE HS 5561B to protect the inside and outside surfaces of the wind turbine’s 140 m high tower. Corrosion protection was carried out according to Vestas TPS (TECHNICAL PURCHASE SPECIFICATION).

The tower is manufactured by Titan Wind A/S Varde and surface treatment was carried out by Bladt Industries A/S, Denmark, in their new paint shop in Aalborg.

Steel sections were sandblasted to Sa 2 ½ (or Sa 3 for the sections to be metallised). At the bottom section of the bottom flange to just above the doorway, both inside and outside surfaces were metallised with a zinc/aluminium alloy (60 micron) followed by a two-layer paint system, which was also applied to non-metallised surfaces.

The outer surface is specified for Corrosion category C5-I (high) according to ISO 12 944, equivalent to 1 x HEMPADUR UNIQ 4774A of 200 micron - a self-priming high build epoxy followed by a layer of HEMPATHANE HS 5561B of 70 micron - a two-component aliphatic polyurethane finish. Internal surfaces are specified for Corrosion Category C3 (high) according to ISO 12 944, and two coats of high build epoxy HEMPADUR UNIQ 4774A. 50 and 130 micron were applied respectively.

The moving of the tower between the sandblasting and painting stations was carried out by special purpose vehicles, and the specification of HEMPADUR UNIQ 4774A, with its excellent wear resistance, helped to prevent any damage to the paint coat. The topcoat HEMPATHANE HS 5561B contributes its high weather and corrosion resistance for long-lasting protection. The wind turbine has been installed at the Danish national test centre for large wind turbines at Østerild in Jutland, where the production of electricity is now in full swing.

TOPIC |Hempel web Decal’s storage tanks in Huelva (Spain) remain impeccable after 18 years

v

18 years ago, the Italian group Decal entrusted the protection of its petroleum and vegetable oil storage and distribution facility in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva (Spain) to Hempel, and today the coatings remain in perfect condition. The excellent results obtained are a further demonstration of the durability and strength of our coatings over long periods of time.

Decal provides high-quality storage, bunkering and management services from its facilities in Italy, Panama, Russia, Brazil and Spain, where it runs plants in Barcelona and Palos de la Frontera, Huelva. The logistics platform in Huelva on the Atlantic coast, which operates with full intermodality between sea, rail and road freight, has a total storage capacity of over 500,000 m3

in 48 tanks for petroleum-based products and biofuels and exemplifies the importance of using top quality anti-corrosion paints capable of providing long-term resistance to splashes of petrol, diesel, lube oil and similar fluids.

The primer applied in Huelva 18 years ago was HEMPEL’S ZINC SILICATE 143EO. Like all zinc silicates, it affords a high degree of galvanic protection against corrosion on steel, especially in highly aggressive saline environments, by forming a passive and

Decal’s storage tanks in Huelva (Spain) remain impeccable after 18 years.

insoluble layer of basic zinc carbonate. This barrier fills the pores on the metal substrate, thus creating a structural defence mechanism against corrosion that remains unaltered for long periods of time, as in the case of Huelva.

An intermediate layer of HEMPADUR HI-BUILD 45200 was applied on top of the primer, prior to two further layers of HEMPEL’S POLYENAMEL 55100 (now 55102) topcoat. HEMPADUR HI-BUILD 45200 is a two-component, epoxy paint that forms a thick, hard film that is resistant to salt water and splashes of petroleum-based products, animal and vegetable oils, and strong solvents such as esters, thus making it the ideal choice for epoxy schemes applied to storage tanks in highly corrosive environments. HEMPEL’S POLYENAMEL 55100 is a two-component polyurethane enamel with a gloss finish that provides excellent colour and gloss retention in extremely aggressive environments.

The paint scheme was applied by Depisa (Grupo Soluciones Reunidas), who has been a close collaborator of Hempel’s across Spain for about 40 years. Depisa specialises in the design and application of anti-corrosion systems in the oil & gas, electricity and industry sectors.

Once again, Hempel has been able to demonstrate to customers, like Decal, the quality and robustness of its products in affording maximum protection and peace of mind over long periods of time.

TOPIC| HEMPACORE reaches the North Atlantic

Hempel customer Metaalbescherming Katwijk (MBK) has used a coating system that includes our new intumescent paint, HEMPACORE 43601 to protect the steel, structures of a project for end client, Parlevliet & Van der Plas.

MBK operates impressive steel shop blasting and painting facilities, able to turn out over 2,000 m2 of steel per day and have held ISO 9002 certification since 1997. The company highlights its strict corporate policy of offering “the best solution” for its clients, which includes rigorous logistics planning and delivery times.

On this occasion, their steel work is for the North Atlantic Faroe Islands, forming the skeleton of a renovated seafood cold-store belonging to Parlevliet & Van der Plas, a Dutch fishing and seafood company that has grown significantly in recent years and now provides service at all stages of the process from sea to market. The cold-store in the Faroe Islands is bound by regulations governing foodstuffs marketed in the EU, while the prevailing environment is classed as C4 in terms of steel corrosion (ISO 12944); another challenge of this project is compliance with EN standard 13381-8 on reactive fire-resistance protection applied to steel structures.

The solution?

Hempel has designed a coating system consisting of HEMPADUR FAST DRY 17410as primer, followed by a layer of HEMPACORE FD 43601, and topped with a coat of HEMPATHANE 55210.

HEMPADUR 17410 provides MBK with a high-volume solids, good build shop primerwhich, most importantly, is fast-drying. Likewise, HEMPACORE FD 43601 is the fast-drying version (20 minutes to touch/6 hours to handle) of our range of high-per-formance intumescent coatings for pas-sive fire protection of steel structures. They are one-component, solvent-borne, acrylic coatings that provide up to 120 minutes’ protection in cellulosic fires and can be used indoors or out with a suitable topcoat.HEMPATHANE 55210 is a renowned
