Product descriptionHEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870 is an amine cured pure epoxy coating
reinforced with a high content of specially selected lamellar glass flakes. The product
provides excellent barrier properties and is highly impact and abrasion resistant.
Scanning electron microscopy of the HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870
coating shows the distribution of the lamellar glass flakes inside the coating. These
glass flakes not only increase the barrier properties of the coating, they also improve
the abrasion resistance properties of the product.
Features Benefits
Re-inforcement with high content of lamellar glass flakes Provides excellent corrosion protection through superior barrier effect.(more than 25% by weight of pigments and extenders).
Can be immersed only 6 hours after application Facilitates repair of structures in tidal zones. (20°C/68°F), as curing proceeds under water.
Resists rain only 4 hours after application. Structures coated in shop can be stored outdoors in humid conditions shortlyafter application has taken place.
High solids content (87%). High build properties ensuring high dry film thickness in just one or two coats.
Low volatile organic compound (180 g/litre). More health and safety friendly for applicators, in particular when applied in shop.
Tough, tougher …HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870

HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870 The simple solution for tough environments
Hempel always backs up practical field experience with documentation
from relevant controlled testing. HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF
35870 has undergone thorough testing at every stage of the product’s
development process. All tests carried out are according to highly
accredited test methods that all simulate actual exposures as closely
as possible. Some of the main test results are listed below.
Test purpose Test method Test result
Abrasion resistance ASTM D 4060, Taber Abraser 220 mg loss per 1000 rotations (Load 1000 grams wheel CS-17).
Impact resistance ASTM D 2794, Erichsen Impact Tester No visible cracks at a frontal impact of 126
inchlbs on 1.5 mm panel.
Flexibility ISO 1519 Mandrel bend test No cracking with a 60 mm mandrel at a dry film
thickness of 400 µm, giving an elongation of
approximately 1%.
Coating system: 1 x 500 µm 35870Resistance to ageing ASTM 117-95, salt spray testing No blistering or red rust formation
after 5000 hours exposure.
Resistance to ageing ISO 6270, blister box No blistering and perfect adhesion after
6 months exposure.
Resistance to ageing ISO 20340, cyclic test – method A No blistering and perfect condition after 6 months
exposure. 8–10 mm rust from the scribe.

Coating system: 2 x 500 µm 35870Prequalified to NORSOK M501 – revision 4, system 7 including splash zone
Typical usesHEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870 is designed to withstand the
severe conditions that prevail in the offshore industry. Use of this
product is not limited to application on offshore constructions, however.
Water treatment facilities, sheet piling, pulp and paper mills and water
dams are just a few examples of land-based constructions that also
require proper protection against abrasion and corrosion.
The most common uses of the product is listed below.
Environment
Splash zones on offshore constructions
Typical constructions
Offshore wind turbine foundations
Splash zones on oil and gas
semi-submersibles, jack-up rigs
and process platforms
Environment
Areas exposed to severe abrasion
Typical constructions
Working decks on offshore constructions
Helidecks on vessels and offshore
constructions
Bridges
Penstocks in hydro-electric power plants
Environment
Areas exposed to tidal water or areas that
will be immersed shortly after application
Typical constructions
Jetties
Bridges
Environment
Areas exposed to chemicals spillage
Typical constructions
Chemical plants
Pulp and paper mills
Water treatment plants
Typical specificationsWith a volume solids as high as 87%, HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF
35870 can be applied in dry film thicknesses as high as 350–500
micron, even on vertical surfaces. In addition, the product is self-
priming and can therefore provide structures with extremely good
corrosion protection in just a one-coat system.
The following specifications are Hempel recommendations.
Environment
Legs on offshore constructions, piles or other structures fully
immersed in seawater (ISO 12944-Im2)
Areas exposed to high abrasion in corrosive environments
(ISO 12944-C3-C4)
Coating system
HEMPADUR GF 35870 500 µm

It’s tough to be a hard coatingHEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870 provides excellent corrosion protection as well
as high resistance to both impact and abrasion. This product is thus tailor-made for the
severely corrosive atmospheric conditions faced by offshore oil and gas constructions.
Applying any form of paint or coating to such offshore constructions can be both
difficult and extremely costly. This is why the selection of long-term protection
solutions is of the utmost importance. HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870 is
designed to provide long-term protection of steel structures and thereby minimise
the high maintenance costs and great risk that result from premature refurbishment.
This is why prevention is better than cure.
NORSOK M-501 approvedThe performance provided by HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870 is documented
by certification in accordance with NORSOK M-501, revision 4, for system number
7. HEMPADUR MULTI-STRENGTH GF 35870 passed the tough requirements related
to both immersion and splash zones. This test includes both cathodic disbondment
testing according to ASTM G 8 and 4200 hours of cyclic QUV/salt spray test –
corresponding to a combination of ASTM G53 and ISO 7253.

How to read the Radargram• The Hempel Radargram mapping tool provides customers with a considerable amount of crucial information about
epoxy coatings in a straightforward, easy-to-understand form. The Radargram displays a range of importantquantitative and qualitative product performance criteria.
• The Radargram uses a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 as the highest score. An average score of around 4 should bethe minimum for an epoxy coating, unless the product has specially designed features. These are difficult to showin a Radargram, which makes general comparisons between all types of epoxy coatings.
• The Radargram is intended as an overall indication of the characteristics and capabilities of the product. The leftside of the Radargram provides an indication of the general performance properties – the main focus for the end-user/owner. The right side gives an indication of the application properties, which are of prime interest for the applicator.
• A blue Radargram indicates that the product is intended for both submerged and dry areas. A red Radargram indicates that the product is intended for dry areas.
• Read more about the Radargram in the Hempel Epoxy Encyclopaedia, in the Hempel Radargram Illustrator or atwww.hempel.com.
