Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8th at 6:30 pm. Please note this is the second Tuesday of the month due to the New Year. As always, we will meet upstairs in the school library. Request from the Gym

It is expected that all students wear clean and dry gym shoes when they attend their Physical Education classes. If possible, please have your child keep a pair in their school locker during the week so that they are prepared for class (now that many students are wearing their winter boots to school).

Students should not be wearing their gym shoes outdoors on the playground during the school day. If you could please help make sure their gym shoes are clean and dry for class each week that would be a great help! Thanks so much for your cooperation with this.

4-Year-Old Kindergarten Registration

The School District of West De Pere has scheduled a Four-Year-Old Kindergarten registration date for children who would be four years of age before September 1, 2019, and are planning to attend Four-Year-Old Kindergarten in the fall of 2019. Registration will take place on Thursday, February 21st from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The registration will be held at the Phantom Knight School of Opportunity. The address is 400 Reid St. and it is located on the second floor of the building. For registration, you need to bring your child’s birth certificate, their immunization record, and proof of residency such as a utility bill or lease agreement. This is an open-house style registration and being early has no influence on the section or session of 4K your child will have. If you have any questions concerning registration, please call Westwood Elementary at 337-1087 ext. 1322; Hemlock Creek Elementary at 425-1900 ext. 3320, or Scott Marsden, 4K Director at 337-1087 ext. 1323.

Our 4-Year-Old Kindergarten program is half days, five days a week. Depending on space availability at each site, children may be served at a location (either school or partnering child care facility) outside of their home school attendance area. If this occurs, transportation will be provided. Four-Year-Old Kindergarten is a voluntary program and no child will be required to attend. The 4-Year-Old Kindergarten program is developmentally appropriate and may include but is not limited to: readiness skills, language development, social development, emotional development, physical development, and self-help skills.

If you are not enrolled in our 4-Year-Old Kindergarten program, parents with children of kindergarten age (5 years old) will be contacted via our school census report. If you are new to the area and have not completed a census form, please contact the district office at 337-1393 ext. 8010 to have your child counted on the school census. If you know a neighbor with small children, please share this information with them.

5 Year Old Kindergarten Registration Information

If you know of any students who are not enrolled in our 4K program but will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019, please attend registration on Thursday, February 21st from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The registration will be held at the Phantom Knight School of Opportunity. The address is 400 Reid St. and it is located on the second floor of the building.

The evening will give you and your child creative ways to work math into your play at home and give parents a better understanding of how math is taught at school through parent presentations. Please come with your school age children to this exciting event to experience games and activities that build math skills. We look forward to seeing you! PBIS News

For the month of December we focused on three areas. The first was a focus on listening to and showing respect for lunch supervisors. Students were expected to follow directions and be respectful. The six classrooms that demonstrated these skills were:

K - Mrs. Spaeth 1st - Mrs. Lang 2nd - Mrs. Catlin 3rd - Mr. Prebelski 4th - Mrs. May 5th - Mrs. Schmidt

The second was a review on listening to the safety cadets. We really stressed being respectful and kind. The six classrooms that showed this were:

K - Mrs. Herlache 1st - Mrs. LaPierre 2nd - Mrs. Schoenwalder 3rd - Mrs. Hebl 4th - N/A 5th - Mrs. Bildings

The third focus area was how to transition from lunch to class. Students did this by keeping hands and feet to themselves and voice level of 0/1. The six rooms that were successful at this were:

K - Mrs. Rohr 1st - Mrs. Hopkins 2nd - Mrs. Clarke 3rd - Mrs. Madala 4th - Mrs. Dernbach 5th - Mrs. VanBoxel

Kids Heart Challenge 2019

Formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart, Kids Heart Challenge will be taking place the week of February 11-15, 2019 during our students regularly scheduled PE classes. Our event includes a variety of fun physical activity stations while learning how to keep our hearts healthy and strong. All students will participate in the event whether they fundraise or not. However, if you decide that you wish to raise money for the American Heart Association, packets will be coming home after the holiday break (in mid-January) with information about how to donate. Questions? Contact Mrs. Luebke, Hemlock Creek Elementary’s Kids Heart Challenge Coordinator. [email protected]

Library News

Battle of the Books battles will be starting in January! Many 5th graders have been busy reading the books so they are ready for the battles. Teams will answer questions about the books to compete in a March Madness style bracket. The winning team from Hemlock Creek will go on to the state competition to compete online against teams from all over Wisconsin!

In December, 3rd graders experienced makerspaces in the library. A makerspace is a place where people create, build, and collaborate. Our makerspace included centers with bookmarks to color, StickTogether (a collaborative poster building creation), puzzles, Osmo, Dash robots, Bloxels, and Keva blocks.

5th graders collected 131 pajamas for The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive! Scholastic will donate books to go with each set of pajamas and deliver them to children for the holidays. Way to go!
