HISTORY

Today, Community Action Agencies (CAA)empower struggling individuals and families by including them in community problemsolving and ensuring collaboration of all community stakeholders. CAAs serve 99 percent of counties in the United States.

In 1964 President Johnson launched the Community Action Program as part of the War on Poverty. The Community Action Program was established in communitiesthroughout the United States in order tocoordinate poverty relief programs. Programs included Head Start, Weatherization andFamily Self-Sufficiency.

Poverty remains elevatedIn North Carolina, poverty touches the lives of more

than 1.7 million residents. Disparities persist too, poverty maintains the fiercest grip on communities of

color, children and single-parent households.

SRCAA Service Area

SRCAA is a regional non-profit organization that serves families and individuals in the counties of Rowan, Cabarrus, Davidson, Moore, Montgomery and Stanly.

Head StartEarly Childhood Education

Head Start promotes the school readiness of young children from low-income families through agencies in their local community.

Head Start and Early Head Start programs support the mental, social, and emotional development of children from birth to age 5.

Head Start encourages the role of parents as their child's first and most important teachers. Programs build relationships with families that support positive parent-child relationships, family well-being, and connections to peers and community.

Head Start delivers comprehensive services in a learning environment that is individualized to support children’s growth. Services are designed to be responsive to each child and family’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. Comprehensive services include:

Family Services

The Family Self-Sufficiency program is offered in both Rowan and Cabarrus Counties. It is dedicated to serving low-income families and helping them reach their goals such as job training, job readiness, job attainment, housing and education support.

Career and Education Training Services (CETS)

Funded provided by

Career & Education Training Service is a year-round program that provides services to youth ages 14-21. Services include:

Leadership development Adult mentoring Comprehensive guidance and counseling Tutoring and study skills training Alternative secondary school offerings Limited internships Paid and unpaid work experiences Job shadowing Occupational skills training & on-the-job training.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Did You Know:

Low-income families typically spend 17% of their totalincome on energy vs. 4% for other households.

Weatherization saves each family approximately $437 in heating & cooling costs annually.

SRCAA’s Weatherization Assistance Program:

Reduces energy costs to low-income families.

Program primarily serves elderly, disabled and homes withchildren.

Program works with single family and mobile homes.

Joy McEntyre Blakeney, aHead Start alum graduatedMagna Cum Laude in May 2013 from The University ofNorth Carolina at CharlotteWith a Master of Science inNursing (MSN) Degree inNursing Administration.

Kendall Frye, a single mother enrolledin the Family Services program. Kendallhad been out of work for several months and was receiving unemployment benefits upon enrollment. She attended Rowan Cabarrus Community College to obtain a Pharmacy Technician Certification. She earned her certification and she found a new job with a substantial salary increase.
