Ad arv Adamo, two-t~e All-Los Angeles City first team end and---leader of Birmingham High School's championship line, was a

unanimous choice as "Player of the Year" when members of HelmsAthletic Foundation's All-Los Angeles City Board of Football met toname their annual All-City Teams. It is interesting to note that MarvAdamo is the first lineman to be named for "Player of the Yearn honorssince another pair of fine ends shared this distinction back in 1957.On this occasion it was Jtm Bates of Manual Arts and Bob Levingston ofL.A. High who shared honors.

As expected, City Champion Bi~ingham led all other teams inplacing players on this year's All-City eleven. Six representativesfrom ooach George Goff's Braves were named, three of them on the firstteam. Runner-up Los Angeles, Polytechnic, Van Nuys, Gardena and Fremont each placed three players on the honor teams.

City Champion Birmingham compiled an awesome record during the1963 campaign and Marv Adamo led the Braves' line, one of the mostfierce aggregations to come along in years. The Braves averaged 42ipoints in six league encounters, blanking five teams in the processoCoach George Goff made it quite clear he oonsidered his star end thefinest football player in the valley this season. The Helms Board considered him the best in all of Los Angeles for 1963.

For having been selected the top player in Los Angeles Cityfootball for 1963, Marv Adamo will be honored, alon~ with all otherall-star team members, at the 27th annual All-Southern California Boardof Football Awards Program. Awards will be presented to the honoredplayers at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 18, at 10:)0 a.m.Framed scroll awards will be presented to eaoh oity player and specialmedal awards Nill be given those players named for league "Player ofthe Year" honors.

Never failing to score less than 24 points per game and onfive occasions tallying twice that many or more -- Bi~ingham had only'slightly more difficult a tfme in the City playoffs. East-Valley champVan Nuys, second highest sooring city team which had averaged 32 pointsper contest, was blanked by the Braves in the first playoff round, 48-C,>Marine League champion Gardena fell to the Braves' tomahawk in the semifinals, 38-27, and Southern League champ Los Angeles put up a stiffbattle before falling 21-14. In the three playoff games, Birminghamaveraged 36 points to the opposltion~s 14-

Seventeen Los Angeles City high schools are represented on the1963 All-Los Angeles City honor teams. Four players were named forhonors for a second year. As previously indicated, Marv Adamo is onthe first team for the second straight year. Taokle Jack O'Malley fromBanning was a second team choice in 1962. Tony Kochinas of Lincoln andHollywood's Dann Boyd, second team members this year, were on the thir~eleven in 1962.

It appears that backfield strength will be apparent next fall.Four junior backs were named to the all-star teams, while two linemenwere picked. Three quarterbacks -- Steve Sogge, Rick Purdy and CraigSchusterick -- will be around in 1964, as will Gardena fullback JimLewis. Fremont center, Al Proctor, and Garfield end Tom Georgina willalso have another shot at All-City honors.

~i- Named on 2nd team in '62

A pair of fine Southern League backs -- Carlton Kelly of ManualArts '~':"d Willie Crawford of Fremont -- were named co .....Players of theYear for 1963 when members of the All-Los Angeles City Board of Football gathered at Helms Hall last week to make their annual footballteam selections.

Positions on the all-league eleven were very evenly distributedand justly so, considering the fact the race for the title was soclose. Both Los Angeles (L~...O-l) and Fremont (3-1-1) placed fourplayers on the first team! while Manual Arts (3~1-1) filled threepositions.

Manual Arts' Kelly, Ht 6?5~~ and 19.5 pounds did. a remarkable jobat QB for JL~ B:ewett~s Toilers e Coach Blewett was high in his praise.Kelly scor9d 48 points and his passing an~ defensiv0 ability had muchto do with Manual's fine r'ecord o Wil:i..ie Crawford, among- the city'sspeediest backs, was coach Frank Nobbe's ace. He scored 95 pointsduring the year and was acclaimed by those coaches both in and out ofthe league as a top competitor.

Los Angeles High, winner of the Southern Loop title, went all theway to the finals in 1963, only to loose to Birmingham, 21-14, aftera highly spirited ball game. L.A. had defeated Westchester, 41-13,and Bell, 26-7, prior to running into the Braves 0

Three players are bacY Prom last year's second team. NormanMcBride, Randy Key and Kelly are the repeaters. Only one junior wasnamed to the first team, but he is an outstanding condidate. CenterAlvin Proctor, who anchored the center of the Fremont line, will beback for another year under coach Nobbe.

All-league players, as they have done over the past 26 years, will be recipients of s0roll awards recognizing them tor their fineplay during 19630 These scrolls will be forwarded to the coachesfor presentation at the high schools c
