WELCOME

We are so pleased to welcome you to Focus 2015 at

Camber Sands.

Focus is one of the highlights of our year – an

opportunity to go away on holiday with our ever-

growing family of churches, enjoying a week together

with old friends and new. This year we welcome new

friends from Lincoln, Bournemouth and Hastings as

well as many other parts of the country.

We are thrilled to have an extraordinary group

of speakers with us this year. The programme has

plenty for everyone, with inspiring celebrations in

the Big Top, seminars, prayer and worship. There are

also groups for children, youth and students, sporting

activities and a fantastic beach for all the family.

Take a look through this guide to ensure you take

advantage of everything on offer during the week.

We hope you have a wonderful time!

With love,

Hello Focus! We’re really excited about

returning to Camber Sands and having

another amazing week. Our aim is

to build community across the site

and to host you all at various parties

throughout the week.

We have a large team of hosts spread

out across the site and they’re all here

to help. Here’s what we have in store:

• Hosting picnics and parties that

are open to everyone – a great

opportunity to have fun and meet

new people

• Answering your questions about

Focus, helping you find your way

onsite and feeding back any important

information to the Focus team

• Helping connect you with other

people staying around you

All parents and guardians should

PARENTS’ GUIDE TO FOCUS

4342

During the main programmes we

ask that all bicycles are stowed

in the marked areas around the

bigger venues and that they are

locked securely.

The beach is public and so we

recommend that children are

accompanied by an adult at

all times.

Please drop and collect your

children promptly for each of

their sessions.

Children in Kingdom Crawlers -

Kingdom Seekers must be collected

by their parent/guardian at the

end of their sessions. Children

in Kingdom Chasers - Kingdom

Shakers need to be collected at

the specified end times. If you are

happy for your child to leave on

their own, please let us know on

their first day at Focus.

Helper/child ratios are carefully

calculated. It is not possible to

place children in a different age

group from the one allocated.

As demand for the Focus Kids and

Youth programmes is high, full

participation in these sessions is

expected. We encourage parents

to ensure that their children take

advantage of the programme.

Parents are advised that the

Kingdom Chasers, Kingdom

Shakers and Younger Youth groups

will be going to the beach at some

point during the week, as part

of their usual programme. They

will only be taking part in sports

on the beach, and no swimming

will be involved. If you have any

problems or queries, please feel

free to speak to one of the Focus

Kids and Youth Team.

Please do not leave the site when

your child is in our care. It is very

important that we are able to

contact you should your child

need you.

Parents are encouraged to comply

with the recommended bedtimes

for children and youth:

Babies–Year 2: 7.30 pm

Years 3–6: 9.00 pm

Year 7: 10.00 pm

Year 8: 10.15 pm

Year 9: 10.30 pm

Years 10 & 11: 11.30 pm

Years 12 & 13: Midnight

Cots and bed rails are not

available to hire from Pontins so

parents are advised to make their

own arrangements.

Family Movies will be screened

in the Kingdom Shakers Venue

from Sunday to Thursday (4.00

pm – 5.30 pm). Children under the

age of 11 must be accompanied by

an adult.

Missing children should be

reported to the Info Desk, which is

located in The Village; all reports

of lost children are dealt with as a

priority with an immediate

on-site response.

two will be overseen by Nicole Banks,

Olivia Prisk and Laila El Khazen.

SESSION TIMES

Sunday: 10.45 am – 1.00 pm

Monday – Thursday: 10.00 am – 1.00 pm

Babies aged 0–4 months

0–4 month olds are not officially

allocated a place in the children’s

groups as they are at an age where they

are able to sleep through seminars

and, if awake, need their parents.

However, we have allocated six spaces

at a time for babies of this age within

the Kingdom Crawlers group (two per

marquee) so do feel free to drop them

in for half-an-hour or so at a time if you

need a break. Places will be given on a

first come, first served basis.

CHILDREN AGED 2 AND UP TO SCHOOL YEAR 2

SESSION TIMES

Sunday: 10.45 am – 1.00 pm

Monday – Thursday: 10.00 am – 1.00 pm

There are no evening sessions for

children aged 0 and up to school year 2.

Recommended bedtime for children in

this age group is 7.30 pm.

It’s no secret that God wants to meet

with us. This year, children aged 2 to

school year 2 will be exploring the

various ways in which we can have

‘FaceTime’ with our Father in heaven.

Through looking at various stories in

the Bible, Focus Kids will learn that we

can spend time with God in worship,

prayer, his word, and creation. With

lots of fantastic activities to enjoy, we

hope your child will have fun growing

closer to God and learning how to have

fulfilling encounters with him.

Kingdom Bouncers

Children

2 Years

There are six marquees for the two

year olds. You will be told in your pack

whether your child has been allocated

a place in the ‘Kingdom Bouncers Blue,

It is of the utmost importance that you sign your child in each day, taking a ‘kiddie

card’ and checking that a leader is aware that your child has arrived. It is also

helpful if you can ensure that your child is fed and changed before you leave him

or her – they are much more likely to settle well if they are comfortable. At the end

of the session, your child will only be released to you when you hand the ‘kiddie

card’ over to your child’s helper. In no circumstances should you collect your child

without telling the leader that you have done so. FOCUS KIDSFOCU

Recommended bedtime for children in this age group is 9.00 pm.

Morning sessions will include worship, drama, biblical teaching, games, sport,

dance and craft. Evening sessions will recap the morning sessions, as well as

include exciting dress codes and challenges that will test your wits but will make

you enjoy yourself beyond belief.

Children in this age group will be allowed to leave their group at the specified

end times. If you would rather collect your child than let them go around the site

on their own, you must make sure you are there to pick them up at the end of the

session. The children’s leaders cannot take responsibility for children outside of

the running times of the childrens’ programme.

SCHOOL YEARS 3 TO 6

Children in School Years three to six will be overseen by Jess McLeod

and Ed Crowther.

We know that God created us to be in relationship with him, and to spend real

time in his presence. He wants us to do this because when we spend ‘FaceTime’

with God, great things happen. In our venues this year, we’ll be helping your child

connect with God through exciting activities and brilliant talks.

Our Kingdom Chasers and Shakers will be learning about various encounters the

people of the Bible have had with God, through worship, prayer, his word, and his

creation. We will go on a journey together to encounter God ourselves, whether it’s

for the first time or the latest of many. God is great because he loves us and wants

to be part of our daily lives!

Help more of your church to say hello to summer, family

and church at Focus this year.

We want our whole HTB family to be able to enjoy Focus

and have offered hundreds of bursaries this year to

make that possible.

These bursaries are funded by the HTB family, for the

HTB family, so thank you!

Your support could help in one of the following ways:

• £50 covers the accommodation for a single parent and

their child to have a camping holiday at Focus.

• £180 provides the ticket for a low income guest to come

from London to Camber Sands for an amazing week.

• £600 gives a struggling family of four the opportunity

to have life changing experiences at Focus.

Give online at htb.org/focus-give

To all our volunteers, including so many from our church plants, thank

you for all you do to invest in our children, youth and students at Focus.

Without you, we could not offer this incredible programme of activities.

R. T. KendallGod Meant It For Good: Highlights from the life of Joseph

Monday – Thursday

10.15 am – 11.00 am

Seminar Marquee 1

The life of Joseph is a demonstration of:

• Preparation of a leader

• Waiting for your time to come

• Struggling with the issue of vindication

• Waiting for that prophetic word to be fulfilled

• Wondering if your gift could ever be discovered

• Why total forgiveness is so important to your future

Whatever is in your past – the injustice, the bad and

the ugly. . . remember. . . God meant it for good.

Try Harder

Monday

Graham Tomlin

If you work hard, you will succeed. That’s a

message that our culture tells us all the time,

and so often in the church we believe it as

well. Pelagius was a British monk in Rome

in the fourth century who said that if we all

tried a bit harder, we would become more

holy and get close to God. Is that the way it

works? St Augustine didn’t think so, and this

seminar will explain why.

What’s a Nice God Like You Doing

in a Place Like This?

Tuesday

Jane Williams

Some of the most persistent heresies are

Docetism and Arianism. One – Docetism –

denies that Jesus was really a human being.

He did miracles, he offered forgiveness of

sins, he was raised from the dead, and he

saves us. Surely all of this suggests that the

most important things we need to say about

Jesus are not about his humanity but about

his divinity. The other – Arianism – suggests

that Jesus was a bit like God and a bit like

us, but not exactly either. So this session will

explore why everything we believe about

the saving work of God in Christ collapses if

he wasn’t as human as you and me, and as

divine as God the Father.

You Don’t Need to Read

the Old Testament

Wednesday

Mark Scarlata and Chris Tilling

The heresy known as Marcionism is based

on the belief that the character and

teachings of Jesus do not fit with the God

of the Old Testament. If wrath, anger, and

ruthlessness are evident in the actions of

God in the Old Testament, surely this God

cannot be the same as Jesus, who lived and

spoke of love, kindness and mercy? This

session will uncover why we need the Old

Testament, and how the whole Bible reveals

the same God to us.

Knowledge is Everything

Thursday

Sara Schumacher and Jane Williams

The heretics who concentrated on faith

being all about knowledge are usually called

‘Gnostics’. If Jesus is really the revelation

of God’s truth, we have to discover why

God chose to share that truth not just as

‘knowledge’, but as a human life lived and

a call to follow. What does it do to our

understanding of God and of ourselves if we

think of faith as essentially about knowing

all the right things and having all the right

answers? How does our physicalness form

and shape how we live and act

as Christians?

Hosted by Nicky and Sila Lee

Nicky and Sila Lee, together with a range of guests, are hosting this seminar series

to empower parents, marriages and family life.

The Radical Hospitality of the Family of

God: What is God’s purpose for family?

Sunday

Dr Jane Williams

Dr Jane Williams will reflect on God’s

purpose for the family. Listen to stories

from those who have sought to live this

out practically through adoption, fostering,

crisis lodging and in other ways. Network

and pray with those who share a desire to

see God’s kingdom come through a radical

way of being family.

Transitioning Into Parenthood

Monday

Jon and Susanna March

Jon and Susanna will be highlighting issues

mothers and fathers face when they become

new parents. They will be exploring how

parents navigate this new season of life with

the highs and lows that come with caring for

very young children.

Keeping Kids Safe Online!

Tuesday

Paul Lufkin

The Internet is a wonderful and powerful

tool that is changing the way we learn,

but how do we ensure that this virtual

world is safe for our children? Paul Lufkin,

Headteacher of Wimbledon Park Primary

School in London and a parent of four

children aged 14–22, will share some

strategies for protecting your family online.

Navigating our Sexualised Culture

Wednesday

Sarah Percival

How do we talk to our children about

pornography? How do we monitor what

they see online? Romance Academy has

been working with teenagers in schools

for many years. They see the damage that

our sexualised culture imposes on young

people today, and the vital role of parents in

protecting and equipping their children.

Staying Connected as a Couple

Thursday

Steve and Mandy Marshall-Taylor

How can we stay closely connected and fully

committed as a couple in the midst of busy,

pressured lives? How can our partnership in

marriage be a witness to the love of God and

the hope we have in Christ? Steve and Mandy

have been married for 16 years and run The

Marriage Course at St Peter’s Brighton.

Liberation FromSunday – Thursday

2.30 pm – 3.30 pm

Seminar Marquee 1

Hosted by Will Van Der Hart

Liberation is at the heart of our spiritual focus in 2015. Many of us wrestle with

emotions that limit our experience and ability to live in the present. This stream

of practical, spiritual and psychological seminars will assist you in realising the

freedom that Jesus has already given to you. Introduction to Christian Mindfulness

is led by Baptist pastor and emotional health expert, Shaun Lambert.

Liberation from Worry

Sunday

We all worry form time to time,

but some people find that worry has

become a permanent feature of their mental

landscape. Trying to simply ‘stop worrying’

is not possible for the majority of persistent

worriers, but there is hope and liberation

through a combination of psychological and

spiritual tools and insights.

Liberation from Guilt

Monday

Many people are paralysed with guilt. Guilt

robs them of their freedom, peace and joy.

It can make a person feel unacceptable or

isolated. Jesus’ forgiveness is the ultimate

remedy for guilt, but even for those who

believe, guilty feelings can still present

a lingering problem. This talk aims to

differentiate between our true guilt, for

which forgiveness is needed, and false guilt,

for which a psychological approach will help.

Liberation from Perfectionism

Tuesday

Perfectionism is the enemy of grace, yet

it is a problem rarely addressed in the

home, workplace or church. Perfectionists

are often plagued by dissatisfaction,

exhaustion and frustration. The way out of

perfectionism, begins with a change of heart

about the problem itself. Find grace and

a liberated worldview in this seminar.

Introducing Mindfulness for Christians

Wednesday

Shaun Lambert

Mindfulness is our universal human capacity

for awareness and attention and practice of

it is growing exponentially in our culture. In

this seminar, we will learn about the Christian

distinctive of the mindfulness of God – as well

as mindfulness for health in psychology.

Practising Mindfulness for Christians

Thursday

Shaun Lambert

Biblical scholars recognise the gospel is an

embodied gospel, and mindfulness is the

embodied awareness that enables us to

enter the kingdom place of psychological

and spiritual freedom. This seminar will

teach us the mindful practices in secular

psychology and contemplative tradition

that will take us into the place of freedom.

Monday

Simon Guillebaud

Confused about where your life is going and

what God wants to do? Come to this seminar

and all with be revealed. Life is an adventure

to be lived. For most of us, our highest aim

seems to be to arrive safely at death. There’s

got to be more! So do you want the adventure

of living or the safety of existing? We’ll look

at principles to maximise your calling and

not waste your life.

explore issues concerning adoption and

fertility treatment. It will be an interactive

Wednesday

Graham Tomlin and Martin Breadmore

How do we encounter the fresh call of God

on our lives? What does the Bible teach us

about the surprising ways in which this can

happen, as God leads us to serve his purposes

in the church and the world, including

ordination? This seminar will help you

explore the unique ways the Holy Spirit has

equipped you to serve.

Sunday

Monday

Ken Costa, Pete Wynter and Phil Wall

The emerging generation are slow to trust and

wary of authority. The shape of leadership

is changing. What will it take to influence

effectively in the coming decades and why

must Christians engage in leading well?

Does Jesus Turn a Generation

Away from God?

Tuesday

Amy Orr-Ewing

Some follow. Some reject. Some can’t decide.

If the gospel is good news, why are so many

put off? Jesus claims to be the only way to

the Father and in the process becomes a

hindrance to so many who might otherwise

want to know God. Our multi-faith pluralistic

world demands less exclusivity, so how do

we respond?

Is Jesus a Feminist?

Wednesday

Georgi Sheaf and Shelley Hartland

’Feminism’ can feel like a dirty word for

some Christians. In the church it seems we

rarely hear a woman identifying herself

as a feminist, let alone Jesus as one. In this

seminar, hosted by Women in Leadership

Network London, we look to define the term

‘Feminism’ and ask a panel of men

and women: is Jesus a feminist? We’ll

grapple with how we engage with issues

of gender equality. Join us for this unique

conversation on one of the Church’s

hottest topics.

Ready to Date

Monday

Getting ready to date positively, is about

developing an awareness of your real

intentions and ambitions, and an ability

to express who you really are as a person.

This seminar helps you to ask the

questions (and offers some answers) that

will have the biggest impact on you both

being and finding a successful date.

How to Date Well

Tuesday

Regardless of the setting, a good date

depends on connection, chemistry and

character. This seminar helps you to foster

good connection, identify good chemistry

and value good character.

Your Relationship and the Future

Wednesday

How do you know if your date has

relationship potential? How can you know

if your relationship has a future? This

seminar helps you to discern the way

ahead and also gives some insights into

how to respond if things are not moving in

a positive direction.

Out of Hours: ‘Date My Mate’ Event

Wednesday

Out Of Focus – Queen Vic Pub

You’re a single Christian and you bring

a mate who is a single Christian of the

opposite sex, who you don’t want to date

but someone else might like to. Couples

rotate throughout the venue spending

4 minutes introducing each other to a

succession of other couples for an hour.

The second hour is a general social mingle.

First choice matches are given a free glass

of bubbly.

Let’s Be HonestSunday – Thursday

4.00 pm – 5.00 pm

Seminar Marquee 1

Hosted by Amy Orr-Ewing

Let’s be honest…

Can I believe in a God

who does not answer

my prayers?

Sunday

Amy and Frog Orr-Ewing

Sometimes when we pray,

nothing appears to change.

The Bible tells us that God

hears our prayers and loves

to answer them, so why

does he sometimes seem

to be silent? In this session

we will look at how we can

understand the times of

silence, and keep hoping

when God doesn’t intervene.

Let’s be honest…

Can I believe in a God

who allows suffering?

Monday

Simon Edwards

The problem of suffering is

one of the most intimidating

objections a non-Christian

can raise. This session will

look at how suffering can

open up gospel-directed

conversations rather than

shut them down.

Let’s be honest...

Can I believe in a God

who commands killing

in the Old Testament?

Tuesday

Amy Orr-Ewing

In the Old Testament God

commanded various wars.

In some of these he appears

to have condoned the

wiping out of entire groups

of people. Is God genocidal?

In this session we will look at

how we can understand war

in the Old Testament.

Let’s be honest...

Can I believe in the

resurrection?

Wednesday

Simon Edwards

Secular historians accept

that a carpenter from

Nazareth named Jesus

(called the Christ) did

exist and was crucified.

This session will explore

the historical case for

the resurrection of Jesus

Christ, through the eyes of a

sceptical former lawyer.

Let’s be honest…

There are questions

I struggle to answer.

Thursday, Q&A Panel

Recycling

We are committed to

recycling as much of the

waste we generate as

possible. We will have

a waste management

supplier with us for the

week who will be doing

a lot of work behind

the scenes.

Please help us and

collect recycling bags

from the Info Desk.

Please use these bags to

separate your waste into

metals, plastics, paper

and cardboard and

general food waste.

Please use the bins

provided to help us keep

the site as safe and tidy

as possible.

Water

All of the water used on

the Focus event site has

to be bought in.

Please think about how

much water you’re using.

Be considerate with the

length of your showers

and please turn off the

tap whilst brushing

your teeth.

Power

The Focus event site runs

on highly efficient diesel

generators. This means

we need to carefully

monitor the amount of

power we use on site.

Please only use hair

dryers, charge phones

and plug in other

electrical equipment in

the designated areas.
