Review

Things we do that show our current mood. Actions like crying, smiling, or yelling are signs of how we feel. People understand these because they use the same actions to show how they feel, too.

PreviewIt’s a lot harder for a robot to communicate what's going on, because it doesn’t know how to act. It is your job as the programmer to come up with a way for the robot to let people know what's going on.

Our robot can communicate with people around it through its display

Preview: Display Block

We can control the NXT’s screen by using our Display block from the Action palette.

This way, the robot can show information as text, display data on a chart, or just make a face so we know what it is feeling.

Preview: Sound Block

The Sound block allows us to play sound files or tones. Through this, the robot can give us audio cues about what it is doing.

The Sound block is also useful for troubleshooting during programming.

If you program the robot to make a sound after each task, then you can keep track of which tasks have been completed successfully.

Preview: Sound BlockThis program makes a noise once it starts and after 360º of rotation. We can listen for the tone at the beginning to know if the program has successfully started. If we hear another tone, we’ll know it has detected 360º of rotation.

Preview: Sound BlockWhen this program was run, it played one tone and then the robot started turning in circles without stopping.

What’s wrong with the program, and how did the Sound block help you figure it out?

Preview: Sound BlockThe Wait For block is set to detect rotation in the wrong direction!

The problem came after the first Sound block, which played correctly, and before the second Sound block, which never played at all.

This is what product designers do to make sure
