McCutcheon Hall RoyalHighlanders Club RHA Senator

For the fall semester Mary had served as the RHA Senator for theMcCutcheon Hall Royal Highlanders Club.  Mary is verypassionate about both hall improvement and RHAimprovement.  Mary served on the Recognition Committee andshe volunteered to be a member of the Ad-hoc InternalProgramming Committee.  Mary always goes above and beyondin everything that she does in both clubs.  Even though Mary is aself proclaimed "awkward person" she is one of the most socialsenators we have.

RHA Executive Board In the Spring semester, RHA had a vacancy in the position of

Administrator.  Mary stepped up to the challenge with apositive attitude and many ideas of how to makeimprovements to our organization.  Most notably, Maryworked with a few senators to outline a plan to create anRHA Senator Handbook to guide our future new senators. This kind of ambition is exactly what we needed from ournew member.

Mary attended the Jay Severson Student Leadership Retreatduring the early part of this school year.  This was whereRHA first saw Mary Blossom.  As only one of a few peoplethere from her hall, she rose up to the task of leading herhall.

Mary attend the GLACURH Regional Leadership Conferencethis year.  While a part of our delegation Mary wasinstrumental in helping the crew prep for the conferenceand was always a positive spirit during the conference.  Marycame back from the conference with so many good ideasthat she had collected from networking with other schools.

Dear Selection Committee, It is with the greatest honor that I recommend Mary Pennington for first yearstudent of the year. This year I have been able to work with Mary in a varietyof roles and I have been able to see her entire journey thus far. Mary hasdedicated herself to student leadership on campus and has taken advantageof opportunities to better herself. 

The first time that I got to talk to Mary she was running for her space on theexecutive board for the Royal Highlanders club in McCutcheon as RHAsenator. To a full room of about one hundred of her peers she exclaimed howshe wanted to make McCutcheon a supportive home and a place thatpeople can have community and have a voice. The passion she had forstudent leadership shined from day one. 

The first time that I saw Mary in action was at the Jay Severson LeadershipRetreat for the Residential Life student organizations at Purdue. Maryworked long hours prior to the retreat to get everything ready. She createdthe flag and organized her peers to make sure that they were ready for theopportunity. Mary took full advantage of the opportunity and interacted withexperienced students to ask questions and gain peer mentors for herjourney.

Mary became committee to the overall RHA organization. She was engagedin the recognition committee for RHA, wrote legislation to support theindividual hall clubs, and cosponsored a bill to create an ad-hoc committeefor internal programming. This exceptional involvement in RHA did notprevent her from becoming the de facto leader for the hall club and carryout her promise to make a place a home. She executed a coffee finals bar forher fellow students by herself, and she completely rewrote the club constitution to be a better blue print for the following years. 

Those outside of Purdue were able to experience her passion for leadershipwhen she attended the GLACURH regional conference in the fall. She wasable to prioritize planning for the conference with the delegation. When wearrived at the conference, Mary took advantage of every session and tookdiligent notes to share with her peers and some RAs when she returned.Mary’s passion for student leadership is admirable and I am honored that Ihave been able to work with her in her role in Royal Highlanders, RHA, as wellas the GLACURH delegation. I am also looking forward to seeing the leadershe becomes in her new role on the RHA executive board this semester as administrator.
