In the final hours of 14 April 1912, the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, collided with an iceberg and ‘the unsinkable ship’ slowly sank. 1517 men, women and children lost their lives. With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone, the original Broadway show won five Tony Awards® including Best Musical, and this brilliant new production has won sweeping critical acclaim.

Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic The Musical is a stunning and stirring production focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers.

The Last Ship is the UK premiere of Sting’s breathtaking new musical, an epic tale of community, hope and a great act of collective defiance. When a sailor named Gideon Fletcher (Richard Fleeshman) returns home after seventeen years at sea, tensions between past and future flare in both his family and his town. The local shipyard, around which Wallsend has always revolved, is closing and no-one knows what will come next, only that a half-built ship towers over the terraces. With the engine fired and pistons in motion, picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie (Joe McGann) and his wife Peggy (Charlie Hardwick) fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm.

With an outstanding score from multiple Grammy Award winner Sting, this new musical is personal, political and passionate.

ART by Yasmina RezaTranslated by Christopher HamptonDirected by Ellie Jones based on Matthew Warchus’ original Old Vic productionArt is a phenomenon and one of the most successful plays ever. Having opened in 1996, it took both the West End and Broadway by storm, won Olivier, Tony, Moliere and every other major theatre award, and has been packing in audiences worldwide for more than twenty years.

When Serge spends an extortionate amount of money on an all white modernist painting, his close friends Marc and Yvan are baffled. But does their violent reaction to this provocative canvas mirror more dangerous antagonisms towards each other? Yasmina Reza’s dazzling study of friendship, prejudice and tolerance is a masterpiece.

We work in collaboration with many partners to develop skills with and for young people through arts and culture.

Lifting The LidWe’ve been working with some fantastic people to explore some of the backstage roles in the creative industries. Here’s a flavour of what we’ve up to:

Digital Learning Journeys

We’ve delved into the world of virtual reality to produce nine journeys through backstage processes of creating a show, using our Centre production Tiger Bay the Musical last year. In partnership with Lexicon Learning, schools are invited to discover creative processes including costume design, creating a story, set design and lighting and sound through this immersive learning experience. The resources with accompanying bilingual teacher notes designed for key stages 3 and 4 are available on the Google Expeditions platform.

Extinct

In collaboration with YelloBrick, we’ve been working with Radio Platfform participants to design a live gaming experience. The game will be available to audiences during Festival of Voice in June and will take you on a journey to explore and consider voice, communication and connectivity. See festivalofvoice.wales for further details.

Tooling Up

A group of 18-25 year olds are curating a gig as part of Festival of Voice with other young people (and young at heart!) in mind. Supported along the way by expertise in areas including producing, design, promotion and technical, the young people have developed their skills to manage their event. Get your tickets at festivalofvoice.wales

Sharing Your VoiceWe want to provide a creative platform, experiences to build confidence and opportunities to develop skills for expression. Here are some of our programmes designed to celebrate voice:

Voices

Working with partners Oasis, Voices from Care, Cardiff West Community High School and Touch Trust as well as inspirational artists, we’re developing four very different vocal groups. There’s a traditional choir bringing foster families together to enjoy the power of singing to year 7 pupils in Ely experimenting with lyric writing, emceeing and beatboxing. Each group will celebrate their voices throughout the process and some in performance.

Radio Platfform

Our youth-led digital radio station welcomes young people aged 16-25 to get involved. Our 6 week accredited training course starts roughly every 2 months and opportunities to attend events, interview artists, meet industry professionals and lead workshops feature throughout the year. Radio Platfform will capture the essence of Festival of Voice this year through its music and talk radio shows.

Following 8 record-breaking years in London’s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over 7 million people, the National Theatre’s acclaimed play War Horse returns to Cardiff this July. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

In 2018/2019 Welsh National Opera performs two compelling new productions alongside timeless classics in a season guaranteed to leave your heart racing.Autumn 2018 opens with David Pountney’s new production of War and Peace which promises to be as ambitious and epic in scale as the novel itself. The season will also see the revival of two WNO favourites – the sumptuous production of La traviata and La Cenerentola, Rossini’s delightful retelling of Cinderella, which will transport you to a candy-coloured world of fairy tale.

In Spring 2019 love, power and politics collide in another new production, and the second part of WNO’s Verdi Trilogy, Un ballo in maschera. Alongside this, WNO revives their critically acclaimed production of Roberto Devereux, as well as the irresistible and enchanting opera, The Magic Flute.

For more than 40 years, the all-male comedy ballet company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (affectionately known as “The Trocks”) have been delighting audiences of all ages at sell-out performances featuring their fabulous sense of fun and their flawless dance.Established in New York, the Trocks are now loved worldwide for their sassy spoofs and hilarious homages to classical ballet, where 18 dancers each transform into two personas, both male and female!

Every performance frivolously froths with tutus and testosterone, blush-pink ballet pumps, fierce false eyelashes and prima ballerina attitude. However, what makes this company extraordinarily special is their immaculate technique, daring physicality, surpassed only by their impeccable comic timing.

In this searingly beautiful and sensuous work for voice and body, Dusapin explores the pain and passion of two lovers who are forced apart to separate worlds. Springing from the myth of Orpheus but with an intriguing contemporary take – she is the one who wants to be followed. Mixed with the haunting sounds of harpsichord and Arabic Oud, Dusapin’s gleaming, shifting score, performed by the London Sinfonietta, conveys a timeless world within which the movement of dancers and singers can play out their story of loss and desire.
