Hello Eagle Families, At AHS, we are fully committed to the success of every student. As a complete team, we are working hard to monitor the progress of your student in a myriad of ways: attendance, academics, socially and emotionally. We want a complete picture of the challenges your student faces daily to best support him or her. The more we know, the more we can help. To this end, we’ve created an RTI (Response to Intervention) Team that meets every week to look at data that guides us toward a better understanding of who may be struggling to find success at AHS. We obtain data from many sources (grades, referrals, absences / tardies, etc) and we do so for the sole purpose of providing needed supports and/or for removing barriers to success a student may be encountering. Please see the attached RTI At-A-Glance sheet below. Thank you for working with our team of counselors, educators and support personnel to ensure your student finds success on our campus. It’s our hope that you will join us in this effort by making sure your student attends every day and ready to learn! As a complete school community, we continue to build upon our amazing start to the year. Soon we will engage our students and families in a process to identify our AHS Guiding Principles that will allow us best ensure we have a school campus where every student feels welcome and where every student can connect to his or her sense of purpose. To succeed, we need your support centered on discussions with your student about our expectations and goals moving forward…so as a reminder, please share the below information with your student, thank you! Please know will only ever ask three things of your student: 1. Be Involved (we have so many clubs, teams and activities for him or her) 2. Work Hard (do your best, in and out of the classroom) 3. Be Kind (with nearly 1,700 kids here, we won’t all be friends, but being kind is a SKILL for success in life!) Success will follow every student who actively engages our campus in these three things, we promise! Lastly, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read this bulletin and for being an informed, integral part of our educational community at AHS. Our primary goal is for every student to graduate college and career ready - with 21st Century skills! As a staff we’re working toward some very specific goals for our families: 9 th Grade Success Rates – Every freshman on-time for graduation heading into 2018-19 Campus Culture and Building a Safe and Caring Environment – Using Equity as our lens To accomplish our building goals, we will engage our students, parents and community to align our resources. We will also utilize research-based best practice to ensure every student finds his or her connection to AHS while advancing toward on-time graduation with each and every step. Thank you for your continued support of Arlington High School. By working closely together, we can achieve anything... Go Eagles! Duane R. Fish Principal Arlington High School

Our primary goal is for every student to graduate college and career ready - with 21st Century skills! As a staff we’re working toward some very specific goals for our families:

9th Grade Success Rates – Every freshman on-time for graduation heading into 2018-19 Campus Culture and Building a Safe and Caring Environment – Using Equity as our lens

The Response to Intervention Team (RTI) Fact Sheet Students struggle, both academically and behaviorally, for many reasons. We believe, though, that students can be proficient in the general education program if the school has a formal system to catch students early and provide them and/or their teachers with the necessary support. The Response to Intervention Team essentially provides an early warning and action system for identified students struggling to succeed.

Tell Me More… The RTI team is a cooperative, school-based group of people who assist students, parents, and teachers in developing positive solutions for concerns about individual students. The purpose is to provide additional support to students who are experiencing difficulties that are preventing them from fully benefiting from general education. These difficulties may be academic or behavioral.

Who Makes Up the RTI Team? The RTI Team consists of a core of professionals who anchor the team and attend weekly meetings. Core team members include school counselors, administrators, and designated general education and special education teachers. Depending on the concern and expertise required, a specialist may join the team as needed; such as the school nurse, attendance specialist, intervention specialist, etc. Parent permission is not required to conduct an RTI Team meeting but parent contact will almost always occur prior to and following the meeting. What Does the RTI Team Do? Students can be referred to the RTI Team by teachers, school counselors, or administrators. Referral forms are located in Google Drive. Once a student is referred, information will be gathered from other sources. The RTI Team will look closely at many variables that impact a student’s success; including grades, test scores, attendance, classroom behaviors, previous classroom interventions, situations at home, mental health, etc. Through a teamwork approach, The RTI Team will develop intervention strategies for the student. Intervention strategies may include, but are not limited to: extra help outside the school day, regular parent contact, behavior contract, referral for special education evaluation, referral to mental health services, etc. Is the RTI Team Only for Special Education referrals? NO. Although the RTI Team is the appropriate place to start for a special education referral, it is also important to remember that the RTI Team can play an important role in developing interventions for students who are struggling but don’t qualify for special services. The RTI Team is the appropriate place to start when you suspect a student might benefit from a special education evaluation. The RTI Team will look at all variables and assess if all other appropriate interventions have been utilized first. How can I learn more? If you have any additional questions please contact the student’s school counselor or Assistant Principal. The RTI Team meets every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the counseling center conference room. If you would like to attend, class coverage will be provided.

Honor Roll Certificates from 2nd semester of last year will be delivered to students this week. Students are also acknowledged on posters in the commons as achieving 3.5-3.99 or 4.0 semester GPA. Well done! Transcript requests are now being done through Naviance. See Mrs. Nelson in the Registrar’s window if you need instructions or have questions. Remember that early application deadlines are fast approaching and your colleges will want an official transcript as part of your application. Make sure you don’t have any fines or fees! School attendance should be a priority Studies show that students should miss no more than nine days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track for graduation. Make sure to talk with your teen about the importance of showing up to school every day. This should be an expectation. Other strategies include:

Help your teen maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s

sleep.

Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.

Don’t let your teen stay home unless they’re truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches

may be signs of anxiety.

College and Career Fair Drivers Ed on November 16th in the Commons. 2nd quarter Driver’s Ed starts November 13th and

Important Parent Info-Early Dismissal, Bus notes, Lunch

Early Dismissal – Parents, if you want to get your student out of school during the day, the best thing to do is

send a note in the morning, this way we don’t have to interrupt during teaching time. If you need to call in for

an early release, please call as early as possible to give us time to get your student out of class. We have a large

volume of calls each day and calling early is very helpful. Also, you MUST come in and show your I.D. to

check your student out, we are not allowed to send them out to the car unless they come with a note in the

morning.

Lunch Time – This is a “Closed Campus”, students are not allowed to leave campus for lunch unless they have

prior approval from parents and administration.

End of Day – Please call before 2:00 p.m. for all Bus Passes and Early Releases.

Illness - If your student is sick during the day, please have them go to the nurse’s office! The nurse will have

them call home, if needed. Going through the nurse’s office makes the process of checking out a student much

easier.

Yearbooks Sales are closed until Feb. 5-23. The price at that time will be $60, and purchases may be made online or at the attendance window. After Feb. 23rd, no yearbooks will be sold until Distribution Day in June. Those sales will be cas and check ony, and the price will increase to $65.
