AMSI and its schools are proud bid supporters of the Dubai Expo 2020 THE UAE IN WORLD EXPOS The UAE has a long history with World Expo stretching back four decades to Abu Dhabi’s par- ticipation in the 1970 Expo in Osaka, Japan. Today, the relationship continues, with the UAE currently taking part at Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea. The Expo theme, “The Living Ocean and Coast”, resonates deeply with the UAE, which has a proud seafaring history. The UAE Pavilion in Yeosu reflects the nation’s com- mitment to the responsible development and protection of its coastline and marine habitat. They say the sky’s the limit, but Dubai has definitely proven otherwise. A dream into reality, you hear that expres- sion very often, don’t you? Nonetheless, it’s very rare to actually SEE that dream, that vision, become a vivid, undeniable reality. And, it’s also very rare to see it happen in such a brief period of time. Dubai has transformed a plain desert into a blooming paradise in the blink of an eye. Today, Al Mawakeb students showed their appreciation and support Be part of Expo 2020 Dubai, UAE through various activities. The vision and dream of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad transmitted their way into the hearts and minds of Al Mawakeb girls. First off, the junior girls prepared a fun activity for grades 5 to 7 to challenge their general geographical knowledge of the UAE. Students worked in groups and enjoyed it to the maximum, they were also eager to be supporting Dubai in this mega event. Moreover, they arranged activity stands with a variety of amusing games such as building with blocks, coloring the flag, locating emirates on a map and more for grade 5-6 girls to enjoy. The fun doesn’t end here! By the end of the day, the juniors held a presenta- tion titled “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” to spread awareness and create a buzz about Expo 2020 to grades 9-10. They presented speeches about Expo 2020, its definition, its importance and its advantages for example; free wifi, Dubailand, an expansion for Dubai Mall, underwater hotels and much more. Also, they discussed the Dubai metro, it held over 200 million passengers. Additionally, they made a video displaying the past-present evolution of Dubai, and how a beautiful city was created out of a desert. Although a lot of attention was given to Expo 2020, the UAE national day was not forgotten. An integration of both Expo 2020 and pre- national day was celebrated festively in the big hall. All stu- dents were invited to learn more about the Emirati heritage and traditions. Local students did a splendid job by conveying their devotion and dedication to their country through plan- ning some of the activities. It is said that Da Vinci could envi- sion his painting before starting to draw, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum dreamed Dubai, and frankly he’s painted quite a picture. With every grain of sand, every ounce of hope, every moment of hard work and persever- ance, the miracle city, the city of enormity, the city of lights, Dubai was built. Dubai is a prosperous city that has flourished more than any city ever has in 10 years or less. Today, Dubai was seen through Al Mawakeb students’ eyes, it was appreciat- ed immensely through youth. “Why is it that you say, ‘I hope we win Expo 2020’ if you are not a UAEcitizen yourself?” I stared in shock as a relative, who had been visitingmy family and I, made that claim. I’ve resided in Dubai for the past 8years, but it has become more of a home to me than my own countryever was. As a child, I was uprooted from my hometown and plantedinto prosperous Dubai sands. Prosperous indeed, these typically infer-tile sands changed the rules of nature and allowed concrete jungles togrow, flourish and thrive in every direction possible. Citizens of Dubai,a middle-eastern Amazon of diversity, grow and twine together like thebranches of an evergreen tree. From every city of the world, they comehere to plant their skills, ideas and businesses, all of which shootnowhere but up. Their dreams, at first just little spurs, bloom into themost striking of realities. A thing of legends, this city strives to makethe impossible possible for each and every person who sets foot on itsmagical land. Yet with all the growth in the world, Dubai has managedto stay true to its roots. Morals and ethics govern this city, under a rulerwhose thumbs could not be greener. This booming hub of prosperity, pride and potential is predestined to win the Expo 2020. As an individ-ual, a school, and a nation, and by the spirit of the union, we whole-heartedly support Dubai for the bid.

What does Expo 2020 meanto Dubai? Or better yet whatdoes Dubai winning the bidfor the World Expo 2020mean to you as a resident?Well, a lot actually.

1. You can get a new job- It'sestimated a huge 277,000new jobs could be created inthe region, including111,000 in the hotel andrestaurant sectors. Start get-ting your CV ready!

2. There'll be more brunch-es- It's expected there'll bemore hotels built to copewith the 25 million visitorsexpected. That means moreluxury places to hang out forus residents! And morebrunches!

3. You'll have more clothes-"Retail is going to grow likecrazy," according to DavidMacadam, CEO and ViceChairman at Middle EastCouncil of ShoppingCenters. Shop 'till you drop!

4. You'll be able to try thelatest craze first- Dubai couldbe home to some life-chang-ing inventions. The EiffelTower, the telephone, icecream and Heinz TomatoKetchup were all created forprevious Expos! What couldbe invented here? The mindboggles. But we'll be the firstto try it.

5. Rents might cause youdrama- The big question. Will rents be pushed up?We fear they could. If yourlandlord does try to getmore cash, visit www.dubai-land.gov.ae and click on therent calculator. It'll tell youwhat you should be paying, and if your landlord doesn'tagree, you can complain toReal Estate RegulatoryAgency (RERA). Howeverproperty experts CRBE haveput a positive spin onthings. They've said possibili-ty of winning the bid hasalready been factored intoDubai's rising propertyprices. A constructionboom, likely to be spurred

by the event, will meanthere'll be more to goaround too. We really hopelandlords won't try to takeadvantage.

6. There'll be shorter taxiqueues and a better airport-The Dubai Metro will get anew purple line extending tothe Expo site, while there'llalso be a cable car and busservices to get there. Plus thenew Al MaktoumInternational Airport atDubai World Central (nearJebel Ali and way cheaper ina taxi than DubaiInternational) will surpassLondon Heathrow as thebiggest in the world, with160 million passengers peryear. The Dubai Tram willalso be finished, making iteasier for folks in theMarina to get to work. Nomore crazy taxi rides!

7. New university- Once fin-ished, the Expo site will betransformed into a universityand research center, and acity can never have too manylearning centers.

8. More places to hang out-All the projects which werebegun but never completedwill be given a kick-start bythe Expo. We're hopingthat'll include things likeThe World Islands so wecan go visit, and that amaz-ing Palazzo Versace Hotelnear Dubai Festival City. The world's biggest mall, that will be bigger than TheDubai Mall, will also bebuilt.

9. A better environment-The city will become moreenvironmentally friendly, asDubai Expo 2020 has a tar-get to produce 50% of theExpo’s energy requirementson site. We hope it'll set agreen example for the rest ofthe city and get us all recy-cling, so we can feel lessguilty about harming theenvironment.
