Welcome

Welcome to the Summer edition of our magazine. There’s a lot going on in the village especially this time of the year.

We are extremely pleased to welcome all our new Lifestylers into village life and introducing them to the numerous activities which continue to provide so many opportunities to try new things whether it’s playing pool, darts, lawn bowls or doing watercise twice a week in the heated pool or taking arts and craft

classes or working in the hobby workshop, there’s always a lot to be involved in as much or as little as you like.

I’ve been involved in the Lifestyle Village industry for almost 25 years now, and even I was surprised to learn of the research that has gone into what the top predictors of longevity are. Believe it or not, the top two predictors are factors of your social life called

Social Integration and Close Relationships which I discovered recently in a TED Talk by Susan Pinker and I was stunned at how closely those things described life in our village.

I was so taken by this I started researching the Blue Zones projects around the world which are communities where there is an abnormally high percentage of people who live to over 100 and where men and women typically live to the same age, whereas in our society women live about 8 years longer than men.

I’ve written an article in this magazine to talk about it in more detail but suffice to say that we are currently working on how to integrate these life extending predictors into daily village life (even more than they currently are) and we have started showing the TED Talk video at our seminars and info days to spread the word about how moving into the village may even extend your life, but in any event you’re likely to have a lot more fun!

Helena Valley is the name of a river valley and a locality in the foothills of the Darling Scarp in Perth, Western Australia. It is located approximately 8 minutes from Midland, 11 minutes to Guildford and the beautiful wineries of the Swan Valley.

Just a short trip from Helena Valley is the tree-lined village of Mundaring where you can learn about the history of the region and pick up a variety of maps highlighting the large amount of activities and attractions to be found.

Just out of town you will find the vast water reserve of the Mundaring Weir and the Perth Hills Discovery Centre where you can learn about native flora and fauna. You can also picnic at any number of stunning parks in the area.

AnotherIt’s always a treat to watch homes being installed in the village and this one was special because of the delicate maneuvering it took to dance around the trees we love so much to install the home. It was the first home to be installed that day with the second home installed in the afternoon also on a lovely stage 6 site with views to the hills.

All our homes are built to the highest standards, which includes a concrete slab, steel frame construction, fibre cement cladding, Colorbond Roofing and an energy rating equivalent to 6 stars.

The inspiration for Helena Valley came from the realisation that people who regularly holiday in parks and resorts experience reduced stress, a general feeling of well-being and a closer feeling of community via a stronger connection to people. Helena Valley wanted to harness this dual sense of holiday and community to provide a similar lifestyle experience every day of the year.

It is now over 18 months since my daughter-in-law & I were driving past this Village & she suggested we go in and have a look at some units just to have a look!

Richard took us for a tour on the buggy and showed us through the type of homes that were available. My daughter in law said I think you’ll be happy in here. It feels good & safe.

We went home to the country where I lived as a farmer’s wife for 54 years. I have always lived in a small country town all my life and this Village here had that quiet country feel.

After many many tears and talks with family we decided this would suit me!

I have now been here over 12 months and I love my new home clean and fresh looking and its growing every day to be my home. Also, my late husband’s little dog has settled in so very well.

I think I have the best position in the Village for my home and so quiet but guess that will change in time to come! My neighbours are so friendly and welcoming.

The Admin Staff, Richard, Jenny, Mark and Co have been so helpful and friendly & I thank them from the bottom of my heart for all they have done to make the greatest change in my life so enjoyable.

THE SECRETS OF A LONG LIFE

We all want to live longer don’t we?

Providing we are well enough to enjoy it!

Having been involved in the lifestyle village industry for almost 25 years now, one thing I’ve noticed is the big difference in people. Some 50 year olds act like they are 80 while some 80 year olds act like they are 50!

This made me wonder, are the 80 year olds who seem like they are 50 happier and more friendly because they just felt good all the time or whether they physically felt good because they were happy? Does this then impact not only how happy you are, but also how long you live? Can we change anything in our lives to live longer or is purely genetics? This question has always intrigued me.

Recently, I came across a ‘TED Talk’ by Developmental Psychologist Susan Pinker, discussing some research done on the strongest predictors of longevity and what factors make the biggest difference. Surprisingly, the research showed that the top two predictors of longevity are features of your social life, something called “Social Integration” and “Close Relationships”.

Close Relationships are the people you can call on for a favour or will take you to the hospital if you are not feeling well or sit with you if you are having an existential crisis. Having these people in your life are a strong predictor of how long you will live, believe it or not, more so than quitting smoking or drinking, doing exercise or your weight levels.

Topping the list is Social Integration, which is how much you interact with other people during your day. How many people do you talk to daily, including both your weak and strong bonds? Not just the people who are close to you, but do you talk to the guy who makes your coffee, the butcher, people you walk past on the street? Do you play bridge or belong to a book club? Do you play darts or pool or take art classes? This is the strongest predictor of how long you’ll live.

Susan goes on to talk about the difference between physical interaction with people versus online interaction or over the phone. There is strong evidence to say that interacting in person has a much more positive physical impact and health benefit when compared to interacting online.

Needless to say I was not only amazed by this, but my own experience and observations would have to agree when I look at what happens to people when they move into the Village and start to experience the natural social integration we have, because of the nature and design of our community.

We have wonderful shared facilities that encourage social interaction and so many activities you can participate in (check out the back page for a list of some of them) and just being in an environment that exposes you to all those opportunities makes it so easy.

Susan finishes her talk by saying it’s about “building your village” (no, we didn’t tell her to say that…) and building personal interaction and that “building it and sustaining it is a matter of life and death!”

In her talk, Susan Pinker talked about Blue Zones projects, so interested by it I explored Blue Zones online and found a wealth of information about what they do and who they are. They basically researched the 5 communities around the world where the rate of people who live to be 100 or more was higher than anywhere else and focused on what those communities have in common that might cause such a thing.

What they found, they distilled into 9 principles that were common across all the communities and which had to do with things like moving naturally, personal purpose, a sense of belonging, putting families first, downshifting and de-stressing and our personal favourite - wine at 5!

You can study all 9 principles on their web site at bluezones.com and what became apparent to me was many of the things that they talk about are commonly occurring things in our village. So at least for those who live here they have the opportunity to be part of a group, have a sense of belonging, increase their social integration tremendously because the opportunities are there everyday in front of you and seem to spring up whenever you talk to another lifestyler.

It’s a great place to overcome loneliness and start to enjoy life again with other people many of whom are looking for the same thing. It’s the best part of our job when we start to see the sparkle in someone’s eye who is finding that for themselves after they’ve moved in. It’s just great!
