What are the benefits of Complete Streets?
• Complete streets create a balanced transportation
system that can create economic growth and stability
by providing accessible and efficient connections
between residences, schools, parks, offices, public
transportation and retail destinations.
• Improves safety by reducing crashes through safety
improvements.• Encourages more walking and bicycling in a country
with high obesity levels.
• Helps ease transportation congestion and increases
overall capacity of the network.
• Helps children by providing spaces for bicycling and
walking so they can be active and gain independence.
• Creates good air quality by minimizing motor vehicle
miles traveled – if each resident of a community of
100,000 replaced one car trip with one bike trip just
once a month, it would cut carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions by 3,764 tons per year.
• Integrating sidewalks, bike lanes, transit amenities and
safe crossings into the initial design of a project makes
fiscal sense, sparing the expense of retrofits later.

Hele On Kaka‘ako will be Hawai‘i’s secondCyclovia, and the first in Our Kaka‘ako.
We’ve closed the streets for Hele On Kaka‘ako to allow
pedestrians, cyclists and people using other active
transportation the opportunity to feel comfortable
riding and walking while becoming reacquainted with
their community.
The event starts with a 5k run and includes a bike shareprogram, suggested bike ride route, the Cycle On
Runway, bicycle repair and education, exercise classes,
a skateboard ramp, food vendors, entertainment and
prizes. Fill up your activity card with eight stamps and
join us at the stage in Mother Waldron Park for prize
drawings every hour on the hour. Grand prize giveaway
is at 2:00 p.m.
In addition to promoting active and healthy lifestyles,
Hele On Kaka‘ako features a mock-up of a complete
street on Cooke Street from Ala Moana to Halekauwila
Street. The project showcases a balanced transportation
system that provides accessible and efficient connections
between residences, schools, parks, public transportation,
offices and retail destinations.
Our Kaka‘ako is a community encompassing nine city
blocks in the heart of Kaka‘ako surrounding the emerging
arts, culture and creative center of Keawe, Auahi and
Cooke streets. It is a commitment by Kamehameha
Schools to design a thriving neighborhood rooted in
education, authenticity and cultural responsibility.
Our Kaka‘ako will feature complete streets with
people-centric, sustainable pathways designed for
pedestrians, bicyclists and mass-transit. In Our Kaka‘ako,
people are the center of design.
