Educating Men and Women for Intelligent Action.

From Ramayya Krishnan Dean, H. John Heinz III CollegeWilliam W. and Ruth F. Cooper Professor of Management Science and Information Systems

Thank you for your interest in Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz III College and its top-ranked graduate degree programs.

The unique pairing of our two schools, the School of Public Policy and Management and the School of Information Systems and Management, offers an academic experience un-like any other. It prepares students with a unique ability to conduct careful and objective analysis of relevant data, to understand and leverage the power of information technology, and to lead and implement change in managerial and policy contexts. In key areas of the global economy, thought leaders with a unique set of skills at the intersection of policy, technology and management are in great demand. Heinz College is perfectly positioned to develop these leaders.

When Heinz College was first founded more than four decades ago, Dean William Cooper had a vi-sion of “educating men and women for intelligent action,” and this is still our primary objective. Building on this vision, Heinz College adheres to four basic principles:

Real-World Problem Solving. All of Heinz College’s full-time master’s programs require

students to complete a capstone project, solving real issues for real clients. In addition to testing academic skills, these projects also provide practical leadership and communica-tion experience.

Innovation. Heinz College students and faculty innovate in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors using a number of mechanisms -- scholarship and fundamental research, technology development and analytics, and social entrepreneurship, to name a few.

Diversity. The Heinz College community is diverse in its demographic and geographic composition, as well as in the broad range of disciplines and interests we bring together. We are unique in having programs and students with interests in the private, the public and the non-profit sectors. Exposing our graduates to this variety enhances their performance in diverse organizations and marketplaces.

Compassionate Leaders. Heinz College has a strong commitment to serving the public good. Irrespective of the sector or job our students choose, they engender positive change in their communities. Their innovations often are manifested in projects that provide early warning of disease outbreaks; help make public transportation more efficient and easier on the environment; and redevelop urban neighborhoods with green jobs.

We are excited that you are considering Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College, and we look forward to seeing you on campus soon!

Sincerely,

Ramayya KrishnanDean, H. John Heinz III CollegeCarnegie Mellon University

Ramayya Krishnan is Dean of Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College, and the W. W. Cooper and Ruth F. Cooper Professor of Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon Univer-sity. He has a B. Tech in Mechani-cal Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and a Ph.D. in Management Science and Informa-tion Systems from the University of Texas at Austin. He is an Inter-national Research Fellow of the International Center for Electronic Commerce in Korea and a Visiting Scientist at the Institute for Informa-tion Systems at Humboldt University (Germany).

His recent research projects investigate risk management in business process design and in information security; social network analysis in settings ranging from call data records to knowledge sharing communities; consumer behavior in e-business settings; and the design of policies that take into account the competing needs of promoting data access and protecting privacy. He has published widely on these topics. His work has been funded over the last decade by the National Science Foundation, The Army Research Office, and DARPA.

Krishnan’s teaching interests lie at the interface of technology, business and policy aspects of internet-en-abled systems. He teaches courses on e-business, telecommunica-tions management and a capstone course – digital transformation – that integrates technology and organiza-tional aspects of technology imple-mentation. He is the recipient of the Martcia Wade Teaching Award from Heinz College’s School of Public Policy and Management and has twice received the Teaching Award for Heinz College’s IT programs. He teaches in numerous executive edu-cation programs and is an expert on the use of IT to both create and capture value for organizations.

Pittsburgh & Heinz College: Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders

Pittsburgh, which lies within 500 miles of nearly half of the U.S. population, has not only been named America’s Most Livable City (The Economist, Forbes), it has become a hub for innovation in a myriad of fields, from technology to medicine. Pittsburgh is a city that nurtures education and welcomes start-ups and tech titans alike. Heinz College is proud to call Pittsburgh home. The city’s strengths and our education and research concentrations are perfectly aligned to foster meaningful experiences both during your graduate-level study and post-graduation as you secure employment.

Information Systems and Security: The Pittsburgh region is an epicenter for technology and innovation. The city plays home to regional offices of notable tech giants such as Google, Apple Inc. and Intel Corp., and also offers the creativity and investment opportunities necessary to cultivate a dynamic tech start-up community. Information Systems and Management (MISM, MSISPM and MSIT) students have top-notch resources and employment opportunities among the city’s flourishing technology sector.

Arts and Entertainment: A vibrant arts and entertainment scene has helped turn Pittsburgh into one of the most livable cities. Whether interning at one of the city’s renowned museums, such as the Carnegie Museum of Art, Andy Warhol Museum, or the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, or gaining experience with one of the many production studios that choose Pittsburgh as a filming location, there is no shortage of ways for Arts Management (MAM) or Entertainment Industry Management (MEIM) students to become immersed in Pittsburgh’s arts and culture offerings.

Health care: Early in Pittsburgh’s revitalization, the city made a substantial investment in the healthcare industry; the investment has paid off, as seen with UPMC being the city’s biggest employer for 2014. The Pittsburgh region hosts more than 50 hospitals and the city itself boasts 20, including those in the UPMC Health System and the West Penn Allegheny Health System. Health Care Policy and Management (MSHCPM) and Medical Management (MMM) students enjoy a wealth of internship, employment and research resources.

Public Policy: Pittsburgh has proven itself to be a progressive leader with respect to public policy. From becoming the first major U.S. city government to develop an iPhone application that harnesses crowd-sourced community input, to the more than 50 LEED-certified Green buildings that stand within the city’s perimeter, Pittsburgh and Heinz College are poised to produce the next generation of policy makers.

Pittsburgh has been named America’s Most Livable City by The Economist and Forbes magazine, praised as a top U.S. destination by Rand McNally and featured in the New York Times for its distinct neighborhoods, cultural offerings and green, easily-accessible suburbs. The city boasts a low crime rate, good schools, a moderate cost of living and exten-sive public transportation (which is free for Carnegie Mellon students). CMU’s campus in the Oakland neighborhood offers an urban environment with easy access to miles of parks and trails.

Carnegie Mellon University Australia currently offers two master’s level degrees: the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management and the Master of Science in Information Technology. We also offer global 21-month MSPPM and MISM programs, allowing students to spend their first year in Adelaide and their second year in Pittsburgh. In addition, we also offer one-semester study abroad opportunities between these campuses.

Heinz College’s Washington, D.C. office was established to connect our public policy students with national and interna-tional policy makers and organizations. Students in the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management program’s Washington, D.C. track spend their first year in Pittsburgh and complete their second year of study in our Washington, D.C. center. Students gain valuable work experience via a nearly yearlong DC-based apprenticeship along side their graduate school work. The goal is to create a dynamic and productive network that benefits our community at large and brings the unique strengths of Carnegie Mellon to positively impact the public interest.

The Master of Entertainment Industry Management program was created to train a new generation of leaders in the en-tertainment industry. Students spend a year in Pittsburgh followed by a year in Los Angeles exploring how management theories and principles are applied in all screen-based media industries, including film, television and gaming.

Heinz College and Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Tec de Monterrey) jointly offer a dual degree in Information Technology. Students complete the Master of Science in Information Technology at Carnegie Mellon and the Maestría en Administración de Tecnologías de Información at Tec de Monterrey.

Singapore Management University (SMU) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have teamed up to establish the Living Analytics Research Centre (LARC). The center is developing new techniques to acquire data on consumer and social behavior and pioneering new approaches to analyze such data. LARC is physically anchored at SMU’s School of Information Systems in Singapore and at Heinz College’s iLab in Pittsburgh.

An exchange agreement with Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas enables MSPPM students from Heinz College or Public Administration students from CIDE to study at the other campus for one semester.

About Heinz College and Carnegie Mellon UniversityAbout Heinz College

Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz III College was founded as the School of Urban and Public Affairs in 1968. The animating vision that led to the school’s founding was to bring a systems analytic approach (inspired by engineering and the mathematical social sciences) to the study of important questions of public interest.

In the years since the College’s founding, we have gone beyond the traditional boundaries of the public interest to deeply explore the impact of information technology on organizations, markets and societies. We persistently explore the ways in which Heinz College’s educational programs can be more relevant and effective in their curriculum, in their delivery models, and in their degree of con-nection to external partners.

Unlike many graduate schools, we are not organized along academic departments. Faculty from our two schools -- the School of Public Policy and Management and the School of Information Systems and Management -- collaborate on instruction and research, an operating model that leads to inno-vation in research and a superior educational experience. Our strengths span the applied disciplines of empirical methods and statistics, economics, information systems and technology, operations research, and organizational behavior.

Our faculty focus their research efforts on a vast array of issues. They have established worldwide reputations for excellence in areas such as the study of crime and criminal justice, urban policy, health care policy and management, arts management, information security policy, and information systems management.

In addition to full-time, on-campus programs in Pittsburgh and Adelaide, Australia, Heinz College offers graduate-level programs to nontraditional students through on-campus and distance-based part-time programs, as well as executive education programs for senior managers.

Heinz College exists to improve the ability of public, not-for-profit and private organizations to ad-dress the most difficult challenges facing society, as well as to strengthen and leverage our cultural resources through skilled leadership and management. Our success is reflected in the contributions our more than 10,000 graduates have made to society through their work in international, national, state and local public agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and private corporations.

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a global research university with nearly 13,000 students, 92,000 alumni, and 5,000 faculty and staff. Recognized for its world-class arts and technology programs, collaboration across disciplines and innovative leadership in education, CMU is consistently a top-ranked university.

CMU’s award-winning faculty members are renowned for working closely with students to solve major scientific, technological and societal challenges. We put a strong emphasis on creating things – from art to robots. Our students are recruited by some of the world’s most innovative companies.

Carnegie Mellon consists of seven schools and colleges: College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mellon College of Science, School of Computer Science, the Tepper School of Business and the H. John Heinz III College.

“The MAM program allowed for an ideal mix of classroom and real world experience that few programs can boast. My time at Future Tenant, a MAM lab space, was invaluable. Only Heinz College would develop such a unique partnership in order to give students the fullest experience possible.”

The arts empower us to look honestly at ourselves and our society, as well as prompt us to think, feel and reexamine. A world without art is a world without culture, heart, passion, or creativity. Maintaining and strengthening our cultural institutions is one of the most important ways an indi-vidual can serve the public good.

The MAM program offers flexibility between the performing and visual arts and combines rigor-ous finance, marketing, and fundraising coursework with practical experience to prepare you to excel in a for-profit or non-profit arts environment.

Features & Benefits:• Systems synthesis projects, internships and independent studies emphasize experiential learning.

• Courses are taught by experts in the arts management field, many of whom are still practitioners.

• Pair your arts management master’s degree with a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law or with a graduate degree in Innovation and Organization of Culture and the Arts from the University of Bologna, Italy.

• Future Tenant, an art space in downtown Pittsburgh, serves as a working lab for the direct application of course concepts.

• Spend one semester at the University of Bologna in Italy or the University of Ludwidgsberg in Germany to gain an understanding of cultural policy on an international scale.

• The MAM program is a joint program of Heinz College and College of Fine Arts, ranked by The Hollywood Reporter as the 3rd best School of Drama in the world.

A new and rapidly changing health care environment is forcing more physicians to accept admin-istrative and management responsibilities for which they haven’t been given the proper educa-tion. The Master of Medical Management (MMM) program at Heinz College allows physicians to be successful in these roles by arming them to lead today’s health care organizations and to shape the future of tomorrow’s health care industry.

Our 18-month intensive program concentrates on three distinctive, but related, competencies necessary for physician executives to build and manage successful health care organizations. These core competencies address effective leadership, strategy, and management of information.

Features & Benefits:• Led by a world-renowned faculty, the MMM program has been named one of the top physician

“Employers hunger for people who can mine value out of big data, but most such data are administrative, not experimental. The MSPPM’s Data Ana-lytics Track, unlike analytics programs in CS and engineer-ing schools, marries data mining and decision modeling with econometrics and so produces graduates with a distinctively valu-able skill set.”

Data Analytics at Heinz CollegeOrganizations across the world are struggling to develop the know-how to aggregate, analyze, and most importantly monetize the growing surge of available data. Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College is perfectly positioned to provide future managers and policy leaders with a unique ability to analyze data and effectively communicate the gathered intelligence.

At Heinz College you will learn about data mining methods, machine learning methods, operations research/management science decision models, data warehousing, geographic information systems, probability and statistics, econometric methods, computer programming and statistical computer package programming, database management systems, data visualization, program evaluation, cost benefit analysis, and more. We have assembled data analytics faculty who combine deep expertise in advanced analytic techniques and real-world applications.

Currently, Heinz College offers two data analytics thrusts: the Master of Information Systems Man-agement – Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (MISM-BIDA) and the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management- Data Analytics Track.

Master of Information Systems Management – Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (MISM-BIDA)

The Master of Information Systems Management (MISM) degree with a Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (BIDA) concentration is developing an elite set of graduates cross-trained in business process analysis and skilled in predictive modeling, GIS mapping, analytical reporting, segmentation analysis, and data visualization.

Students in the MISM-BIDA program acquire the skills to integrate cutting edge information and analytic technology practices with applied business methods. The program features world-renowned faculty teaching a cohesive blend of data analytics, management, strategy, and IT courses. It is this unique mix that makes our graduates highly valued by corporate recruiters. Our MISM graduates have a ten-year track record of receiving highly competitive employment offers from financial service firms, consulting companies, technology agencies and start-up organizations.

Master of Science in Public Policy and Management- Data Analytics Track

Few, if any, public policy or administration programs can provide the breadth and depth of coursework in analytics that Heinz College offers. The Master of Science in Public Policy and Management’s Data Analytics Track provides the skills you need to turn raw data into solutions for the most complex public issues.

Government agencies, large non-profit organizations, think tanks, and consulting firms all deal with enormous amounts of data in their attempts to provide better transportation networks, national de-fense programs, cleaner environments, public education policies, international development programs, development of natural resources, and other public goods.

Through the MSPPM’s Data Analytics Track, Heinz College will take your STEM undergraduate degree and/or quantitative and analytic capabilities and provide you with a state-of-art analytics edu-cation. In addition, the MSPPM’s Data Analytics Track will add professional policy and management knowledge and skills, preparing you to transform data into insightful information for use in public policy and management decision-making.
