Vance Alan HeinrichMaster of Architecture

Vance Heinrich was born September the 9th 1983 in Corpus Christi, TX. Realizing young his passion for design and creative thinking, he recognized this obsession would be implemented in his studies. He began his study in architecture at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In first year studio, he discovered a strong infatuation with model building. Studying under Professor John Webb, his abilities were constantly pushed and driven to comple-tion. In second year, Vance furthered his interest and experience with physical modeling, taking Webb for an additional studio. Later, he achieved an award for chosen design in a student competition for a community center in Cotulla, TX. Under Professor Shantha Gunawardena, Vance studied for three studios including a design build project for a Buddhist Retreat Center in Willis, TX. He concluded his studies at UTSA with professor Candid Rog-ers AIA, developing a project for a Nature Center. The project was a design competition in Chicago, IL on North-erly Island. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Architecture, he paired with a fellow colleague and initiated a small design studio that focused on residential and interior design. They worked on several projects in the San Antonio area also collaborating with Candid Rogers AIA on several projects within his firm. In the summer of 2008 Vance began graduate school at Prairie View A&M University to pursue his Masters. He studied under Bill P. Price for three semesters, including a studio project in New York City. During his first semester with Price, he developed a Library design in Corpus Christi, TX. He concluded his studies at A&M with the design of his thesis; a travelers’ hostel in Austin, TX. following graduate school, Vance began work with Luddeke Architectural De-sign Group in Corpus Christi, TX. After working for the local firm for 18 months Vance is seeking new horizons.

VipassanaWillis Meditation Retreat Center, Topic Studio

Vipassana is a design build project for a meditation retreat cen-ter. The summer studio consisted of twelve students, one serv-ing as our construction supervisor. The studio began with a de-sign charrette to initiate ideas for the program and function.

The project is located on a dense site just outside Houston in Willis, Texas. The timeframe consisted of five weeks for construction with design meetings every evening. The structural piers were poured prior to our arrival, allowing for an immediate launch. Our scope of work consisted of design, construction, and exte-rior finish-out. The landscaping, Interior finish-out, and MEP was completed by outside contractors. The projects’ overall master plan will incorporate a dining hall and short-term resident pods.

DAVDigital Arts Village, Summer 2007

The DAV is a multifamily live-work community for the Digital Arts. Through the use of discarded shipping containers residents would live, work and express themselves through their exhibits at the DAV. The proposal seeks to develop a relationship between the visi-tor and resident while fostering a unique community within the city of Newark. The project of artists studios allow for an inter-play of the pedestrian and inhabitants to engage in dialogue via digital media works illuminating the glass facades of the volumes.Resident artists would be able to exhibit work during process and fin-ished works via transparent glass facades and enclosures within the units.

The project sites itself in response to the urban context. The two linear compositions of the box configuration allows for a pedes-trian street plaza lined with galleries and demonstration spac-es for visitors and residents to gather and engage the community.

LinkedNortherly Island Nature Center, System Studio

The Northerly Island draws a great number of tourists as well as locals to its’ general area all year long. Our proposal for the site is to separate the peninsula into two Islands, an ac-tive section on the north end of the site allowing space for The Nature Center function activities as well as exhibits, demon-strations and the program function facilities. The south Island will be protected in a natural state providing a passive envi-ronment for permeable bike and pedestrian trails, and wood-land areas to create a habitat for migrating bird populations.

When a structure is built the spaces are separated into internal and external, or objects and natural world. The idea is to create a structure that fuses with nature and in part merges human and nature. The indoor/ outdoor structure combines functions to create the path and program together. The building becomes a link for the transition from the active island to the passive island.

AXISHavana Cuba Recreation Center, Summer 2011

Axis is a recreational facility consisting of: a market, training complex, park space and a cultural arts center sited on three existing wharves in Havana, Cuba. The designer was motivated to rehabilitate the area of Havana by developing a center for the community that revives connection with the city and inhabit-ants. The design utilized the existing pathways to reconnect the site with the city. The extensions divided the site programmati-cally; creating park space, views in and out, multi-use space, and circulation. I was brought on for collaboration to create a better understanding of the site and space through model.

WEECWind Energy Education Center, Summer 2008

The Wind Energy Education Center is an interpre-tive center designed to provide the visitor educationalexperiences in addition to a phenomenal senso-ry experience. Sited nearby existing wind farms thebuilding offers views of the surrounding sculp-ture filled landscape. The building becomes not onlya refuge and exhibit center but an instrument of wind. The projects form was developed throughstudying the vernacular of the area. Many of the struc-tures are dilapidated with wall panels torn fromits façade, leaving behind bare structure. Remnants of metal corrugation left twisted and now part ofthe landscape, we wanted to create a similar experi-ence. The corrugated walls twist and morph into theearth, then re-surface as if making a full revolution.

Casa MaruMonterrey Mexico Home, Summer 2008

Casa Maru is a new residential design situated in Mon-terrey on the site of a previous existing residence. The site has been reclaimed without any loss to the existing oak mountain forest. The residence isorganized as a series of pavilions connected by an in-ternal masonry spine. The program includes: livingarea, kitchen, dining, sleeping quarters, and a studio. for the design, local building materials and passiveclimatic strategies were explored: water reclama-tion, natural day-lighting, embracing of the sloped siteand views offered from the forest and into the forest. Sited on a mountainside, the building overlooks the city of Monterrey.

240Corpus Christi Public Library, Design IX

Approaching the library from the north, visitors travel across a fragmented landscape of permeable paving and softscape that appears to morph into the plaza from the existing coastline jetties. This plaza base continues up the library’s hillside, which becomes an outdoor amphitheatre. The plaza entry extends upward to form the building’s core. Addressed by this pub-lic space; along with a café, bookstore, and gallery, the visitor is drawn in-ward through the ground treatment, and upwards by the atrium and light. The building will be constructed primarily from concrete, weathered steel and glass, thoughtfully sourced to be energy and cost effective. Designed and detailed to be constructed efficiently with minimal ma-terial waste, capable of deconstruction and reuse. Internal space will be passively ventilated through light wells, and solar gain from the roof garden will be stored to heat the ground and intermediate floors. Sup-plementary renewable energy is provided by the tides. A hydraulic buoy system rises at high tide which fragments the skin on the eastern façade. As the tide subsides, the float system lowers with the water level which in part closes the eastern skin and opens western façade.

10x10Austin Youth Hostel, Design X

This project is a mixed use design consisting of a travelers hostel, residential units, and commercial units. The hostel accommodates all travelers: backpackers; visiting students; long term students; migratory birds as well as inner city birds. This project looks at both the built space: that is filled by human, as well as, the residual space: that is filled by nature. The design first forms around nature, then is consumed by it. This project focuses on the idea of components that together form modules. These modules are combined to then create different unit configurations. The idea is to create a simple set of prefabricated com-ponents that the client can use to develop a space for his or her needs. Plots can be purchased and developed with these simple sets of com-ponents. Additional components can be later added to the unit if more space is needed. The module system is developed on a 10’ x 10’ grid and the module types consist of: sleep module; bath module; kitchen/dining module; stair module; laundry module; game module; commer-cial module; bird module; tree module; garden module; sky module.

240Corpus Christi Public Library, Texas

This project design originally began during my gradu-ate studies. I participated in a design competition for Kawneer architectural aluminum building products and systems. for this project, I utilized a perforated aluminum panel system to develop operable façades. I designed a tide driven buoy system that controls the transparency of the east and west façades. following graduation, I revisited the project and produced a de-sign proposal package for the city of corpus christi. I de-veloped the concept and design in further detail, then produced renderings and an animation presentation.

Shift HouseDesign Competition, Sydney, AU

The Shift House Residence began with the examination of organic growth and the extension of space. Standard, modular shipping con-tainers are utilized as a basis, though the concept forces an aesthetic transformation of the building’s façade, as well as a direct change in the function of space depending on its occupants. The idea being; al-low the house to dynamically change in response to individuals or groups occupying the space. This is executed thru the use of compress-ing and expanding glass volumes at specific locations in the program, creating positive and negative spaces. furthermore, the perception of organic growth permits accommodations ranging from 1 occupant to 8 or more, while maintaining control of energy consumption in any configuration. An individual may visit the site and inhabit a pri-vate guest module with singular growth, while on the other hand, if the entire family visits the home, a more complex growth is required.
