Welcome back to Term four everyone for what promises to be another exciting and busy term for all of us! I would like to officially welcome Mrs. Cheryl Clark into the position of Principal at our wonderful school. I know that many of you may have already spoken or met with Cheryl. We are very pleased to have Cheryl on board with the school community and I know that you will all make her feel very welcome and a part of our terrific school community. Our first Ready Set Prep for Term 4 took place today Friday the 17th October. A reminder that this term we will only be accepting Frankston Heights enrolled students into the program. This will allow us to see the children interacting socially with their peers and to establish their buddies for next year. If you have not enrolled your

child, please contact the school office as soon as possible, as places are filling quickly. Next Tuesday 21st October is School Photo Day. Please ensure that your child is in full school uniform , with school colours only for hair ties etc. It seems that the weather will be kind to us next week so our photos should look stunning when taken outdoors. If you require family portraits on the day please collect an order form from the office prior to Tuesday.

Next Wednesday 22nd October is our Multicultural Day. A huge amount of effort has gone into the preparation for the day with Mrs. Oke and Mrs. Theodore putting finishing touches to the exciting program. We look forward to seeing many of you at the school for the day’s events and watching our talented students perform on the day and enjoy the many activities and performances planned. The day will begin with a multicultural concert in the school hall at 9.00 featuring the songs and dances that have been learnt by our students. Not only do we have a very busy Multicultural Day next Wednesday but we are also going to be hosting an event to promote the use of Smiling Mind in schools. On the day we will have several government representatives and media at the school. Several of our Year 3 / 4 students will be involved along with Ms Bridget Sowersby, who introduced the Smiling Mind Program to the school. Smiling Mind is a mindfulness/meditation app. More details

will be sent to the families of children that will be involved early next week. Don’t forget that we all must have a Sunsmart hat at school every day for outside at recess, lunch and any other outdoor school activities. Please ensure your child’s hat is clearly and permanently labelled with their name and in good condition. Replacement hats may be purchased at the school.

Have a great weekend everyone! Carole Gagiero

SAVE THE DATE The Year 6 Celebration Ceremony will be held on Wednesday 17

December at Frankston Heights. Further details to follow.

Junior Homestead News!

It has been a positive start to term 4. We welcome Braith and Jake to the Junior

Homestead. We are also excited to welcome Mrs Hawkesworth back after her well

deserved long service leave. The students were keen to share their holiday

experiences, and here are some highlights from their writing.

On the holidays I went to the maze. I looked at some flowers, lily

ponds, fish and frogs. I really liked them. Then Mum and I

thought we should have some ice-cream. Yum!

Waihanea

Ding! A! Ling! My alarm went on. I woke up immediately. It’s

the first day of the school holidays. Wait a second I thought

that means we get to go to the Royal Melbourne Show. “Yay!”

I accidently woke up my sister Matilda. I quickly ran to her

and said “Matilda! Matilda! Wake up we are going to the

Royal Melbourne Show” “Oh yeah we are.” “ Lets wake up

mum and dad.” “Ok!” We quickly ran upstairs. “Mum, Dad

wake up !” They woke straight away. We are going to the

Royal Melbourne Show.

Olivia

It was my birthday. Lauren, Maicy, Mum, Dad and I got into the

car to go to the zoo. When we got to the zoo we went in.

Sienna

On Wednesday I went to the movies to see The Boxtrolls.

I had told mum I wished to see it in 3D but we didn’t. In

the movie a little kid was screaming so I didn’t hear half

of the movie. This was very disappointing.

The Junior Homestead have been involved in workshops highlighting the importance of Cyber Safety. In the world of technology we live in, it is not only important our children are able to navigate and use technologies to their advantage, but are safe while doing this. ‘Hector’s World’ is an Australian Government program “designed to support and encourage participation in the digital economy by providing information and education which empowers children to be safe online.” “Cybersmart is a national cybersafety and cybersecurity education program managed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), as part of the Australian Government's commitment to cybersafety. The program is specifically designed to meet the needs of its target audiences of children, young people, parents, teachers and library staff.” The children have used the information provided to them through the website to discuss safe practice when online. They have reflected on their own and family use of technologies and discussed not sharing personal details on line. The program promotes always asking permission before sharing details if required or using a nick name when required to provide a user name. The children’s involvement and insight has been very positive. If you wish to view this web site it can be found at www.cybersmart.gov.au/young%20kids/visit -hectors-world.aspx

Science at Frankston Heights!

What an exciting term in Science! Children have been learning all

about Physics and many aspects of the physical world.

The Middle School have created wonderful

machines that able transfer force across a

distance. From domino trains to marbles

moving down ramps, we had many different

ways to defeat the menacing Captain Evil! It

was great fun with the children really showing

off their knowledge of how force will be

transferred between different objects.

The Senior School had an amazing exploration into

light and the ways that it moves. They were able

to create their own shadow play and describe the

ways that light can be absorbed or bent around

objects.

The Junior Homestead also explored the ways that sound travels and

can be created in a variety of ways. They created ‘String

Telephones’ and there were many messages sent across the Science

Room!

This term, we will be learning all about Chemistry as part of our studies

in Science. Children will take part in a number of experiments that

will highlight the changes between a solid, a liquid and a gas and

learn how these changes will occur!

I can’t wait for another amazing term of scientific discovery at

Frankston Heights!

With the glimpse of warmer days, now is the time to think about

‘s and safety.

Check the gas cylinder on your barbecue before you turn it on. A cylinder must not be

refilled if it hasn’t been tested for more than 10 years or if the cylinder has been damaged.

You can exchange gas cylinders at a reputable supplier

Check the hose to make sure it has not perished

Check the connections to make sure they are tight and that the O rings are in good

condition and have not cracked or split

Use your barbecue in a clear space. Never use it indoors or in a confined area

Remove excess fat from the barbecue after each use to prevent fires

Do not use barbecues in windy conditions as the burners may blow out, risking a gas

leak. Barbecues don’t have a safety device to turn off the gas if the flame goes out

If a fire occurs, don’t try to extinguish the flames if it is not safe. Turn off the gas at the

meter or cylinder but only if you can do so safely
