Standing side by side as a friend and partner, Bahrain has joined international

efforts to help India in its fight against the coronavirus (COV-ID-19).

As the country suffers critical oxygen shortages amid a devas-tating surge in COVID cases, the

Kingdom is sending medical equipment and oxygen to India.

The Cabinet, during yester-day’s weekly remote meeting chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, expressed Bah-rain’s support to India in its time of need.

In a show of solidarity with the people of India, the Cabinet extended sincere condolences to its government and citizens

following the deaths of COV-ID-19 patients.

The US, UK and other Euro-pean Union members, as well as other Middle Eastern countries, have begun sending ventilators and oxygen concentrator devic-es to India.

The global response to India’s call for help comes more than two weeks after oxygen short-ages were reported across the country.

The Indian government

is now coordinating a mul-ti-pronged approach to ramp up oxygen availability from abroad, including tapping embassies in countries where they can be sourced, speaking to govern-ments to waive regulatory de-lays, and ensuring no disrup-tions in supply chains.

On the occasion of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Cabinet stressed the impor-tance of occupational health and safety across workplaces.

Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, yesterday issued a circular concerning the 2021 International Work-ers’ Day.

Under the circular, Min-istries and public institu-tions will close on Sunday 2 May 2021, in observance of the public holiday, which falls on Saturday 1 May.

HRH Prince Salman also issued Edict (22) of 2021, ap-pointing representatives of the Government of Bahrain to the Board of Directors of King Fahd Causeway Au-thority (KFCA). Under the edict, Customs President Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa serves as Vice Chair-man of the KFCA Board for a three-year term.

Bahrain cuts military spending by 9.8% last yearTDT | Manama

Bahrain was among the Middle Eastern coun-tries that reduced military

spending last year.According to the data released

by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) yesterday, the Kingdom cut its military spending by 9.8%.

While total global military spending rose to $1.981 trillion in 2020, an increase of 2.6% compared to 2019, a 6.5% drop – equivalent to $143 billion – was recorded in the Middle East region.

The top five military spend-ers last year were the US, Chi-na, India, Russia and the UK, in that order, and together they accounted for 62% of total global military spending. China’s mili-tary spending also grew for the 26th consecutive year.

The SIPRI report also shows the combined military spending for 11 Middle Eastern countries and oil-exporting countries.

Eight of the Organization of

the Petroleum Exporting Coun-tries (OPEC) nine-member states for which the institute obtained its numbers reduced their mili-

tary spending last year.Aside from Bahrain, a non-

OPEC oil exporter, Saudi Arabia reduced its military spending by

10%, and Kuwait by 5.9%. Angola decreased by 12%.

The countries that witnessed the largest increase in the mil-

itary burden were among the 15 biggest spenders in 2020, among them Saudi Arabia (+0.6 percentage points), Russia (+0.5 percentage points), Israel (+0.4 percentage points), and the US (+0.3 percentage point).

The 2.6% increase in global military spending comes in a year in which global GDP has shrunk by 4.4% (according to the International Monetary Fund), largely due to the economic im-pacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

US military spending in 2020

was about $778 billion, repre-senting an increase of 4.4% over 2019. As it is the largest military spending in the world, the US ac-counted for 39% of total military spending last year.

China’s total military spend-ing, the second highest in the world, is estimated at $252 bil-lion in 2020. This represents an increase of 1.9% from 2019 and 76% over the decade 2011-2020.

Russian military spending in-creased by 2.5% in 2020 to $61.7 billion.

With a total of $59.2 billion, the UK became the fifth-largest spender in 2020. UK military spending was 2.9% higher than in 2019, but 4.2% lower than it was in 2011.

In addition to China, India ($72.9 billion), Japan ($49.1 bil-lion), South Korea ($45.7 bil-lion), and Australia ($27.5 bil-lion) were the largest military spenders in the Asia and Oceania region, and the four countries in-creased their military spending between 2019, 2020 and 2011-2020 decade.

The sixth intake of the Prime Minister’s Office Fellowship conducted a series of roundtables with senior government officials and decision-makers across various government agencies. The roundtables were held to ensure the fellows gain experience, further hone their leadership skills, and contribute to the Kingdom’s development, in line with the vision of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Industry Minister honours Bahraini inventors

BDF Commander-in-Chief receives British military attache

Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry has hosted a ceremony to honour Bahraini inventors. Held marking the World Intellectual Property Day, the ceremony was patronised by the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, in the presence of senior Industry Ministry’s officials. The Minister expressed Bahrain’s pride in its youth competencies, and embraces all innovations and inventions, as they contribute to the prosperity of the Bahraini society. He highlighted the Industry Ministry’s keenness to provide all facilities to ensure that all inventions are marketed locally and abroad. Inventors Muteea Hussain Ali, Jawad Mula, Ridha Bahman and Amna Al Hawaj gave detailed presentations about their inventions and their work mechanisms. The Industry Minister presented the Bahraini inventors with certificates, wishing them further success in serving the nation and the citizens.

BDF Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa received outgoing British Military Attache to Bahrain, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Paul Windsor. The first electric cars charging station in the Kingdom of Bahrain was

inaugurated yesterday at the Atrium Mall in Saar.

It will be the first among a number of additional stations that will be opened in the fu-ture in various regions that comes within the framework of achieving Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and achieving the vision of the government headed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa,

the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

Electricity and Water Affairs (EWA) Minister Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak and its Chief Exec-utive Officer, Shaikh Nawaf bin

Ibrahim Al Khalifa, inaugurated the charging station.

Aside from officials of the EWA and Atrium Mall, also pres-ent was Farouk Al Moayad, one of the owners of electric cars.

Minister Al Mubarak said that EWA is proud of the advanced achievements that the Kingdom has reached to serve all citizens, residents and visitors.

The electric car charger was

installed by Siemens, one of the specialised companies in this field, and it supports most types of electric cars.

It supports three types of plugs, namely, Type 2 AC Con-nector, CHADEMO Connector, and CCS Connector. The pay-ment process is made via credit cards where the customer can scan the QR code and choose the amount of energy required for charging (kilowatt hours) and input credit card information.

A study of data usage and feedback will be conducted so that the development process will be continuous in the new stations.

EWA is keen to develop its ser-vices in line with future devel-opments in the field of electric-ity and water following the best technological methods that are compatible with international requirements.

Bahrain ‘grave concern’ over East Jerusalem dangerous clashes

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed grave

concern over the dangerous clashes that occurred over the past days in East Jerusalem, as a result of provocations and prosecutions by settlers and extremist right-wing groups, which resulted in the injury of scores of civilians.

The Ministry affirmed its rejection of hate speech and incitement which contra-dicts religious values and principles.

It also called upon the Is-raeli government to work to reduce tension in East Jeru-salem and other Palestinian cities to protect the region from threats to its security and stability.

is an important addition to the electronic transformation pro-cess in the justice sector.

It would facilitate the proce-dures for paying the amounts owed by the ministry in an easy and accessible manner, as well as preserving the time and effort of the beneficiaries and reduc-

Real estate company embezzles BD40,000 from customerTDT | Manama

A real estate company was found guilty of embezzling

BD40,000 from a customer who wanted to buy a house which it put up for sale.

The Public Prosecution charged the company with em-

bezzlement, as well as its employ-ee who was found to have stolen the money, and was ordered to pay BD49,000 to the victim.

Both of them stood trial be-fore the High Criminal Court.

The plaintiff paid the compa-ny BD50,000 as downpayment for the property after it was

evaluated at BD134,000. The company did not complete

the deal and the plaintiff was en-titled to recover the full amount. However, he only received BD10,000, and this prompted him to file a case against the company.

It was found the employee pocketed the money.

“The company advertised the house and I went to them with full intention to buy it. They told me the owner wants to sell it for BD134,000, and I directly paid BD50,000. There was the owner and an employee in the company and I handed the money to them,” the plaintiff told prosecutors.

AUBH For A Day programme launched

• The first-of-its-kind experience offering high school students a preview of university life

The American University of Bahrain (AUBH) launched

the second edition of Bahrain’s first nationwide programme “AUBH For A Day”, during which high school seniors expe-rienced a full day as students on campus, giving them a real-time preview of university life.

AUBH welcomed students from over 27 private and pub-lic schools aiming to support a seamless transition to univer-sity for them, beginning their college journey as confident and prepared as possible.

The participants experi-enced college-level classes, different team-building exer-cises, as well as career-guid-ance sessions, and social-ly-distanced extra-curricular activities, while engaging with current students.

To ensure the community’s safety and to abide by the uni-versity’s COVID-19 guidelines, AUBH has piloted the pro-gramme to ensure that there

will only be a limited number of students at a time on campus.

The University aims to transform the taster into a fully accessible program for all high school students once COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed.

AUBH founding president Dr Susan Saxton said: “As any new experience, the first year of university life can prove to be stressful for students. The pandemic has complicated that transition further by pre-venting young adults to have an on-campus experience, worldwide.

“We are thrilled to have been able to offer them a preview of what life as an AUBH student is like, through a memorable, first-hand, fun experience, which will help them be better prepared once they graduate.”

The participants have high-lighted this experience as “epic” stressing the fact that the event was tremendously useful in helping them better shape their decisions, offering them a clearer vision of their univer-sity options in the Kingdom.

AUBH’s launch of the sec-ond edition of the initiative is in keeping with its mission to offer an accessible Ameri-can-style teaching and learn-ing experience in Bahrain, on par with the best universities in the US.

Bapco CEO receives US Embassy Charge d’affaires

Bapco Chairman and Chief Executive Dr Dawood Nassif received yesterday in his office US Embassy charge d’affaires Margaret Nardi accompanied by Emmi Tewksbury-Volpe, the Economic Officer of the embassy. A real estate company was found guilty of embezzling

BD40,000 from a customer who wanted to buy a house which it put up for sale.

The Public Prosecution charged the company with em-

bezzlement, as well as its employ-ee who was found to have stolen the money, and was ordered to pay BD49,000 to the victim.

Both of them stood trial be-fore the High Criminal Court.

The plaintiff paid the compa-ny BD50,000 as downpayment for the property after it was

evaluated at BD134,000. The company did not complete

the deal and the plaintiff was en-titled to recover the full amount. However, he only received BD10,000, and this prompted him to file a case against the company.

It was found the employee pocketed the money.

“The company advertised the house and I went to them with full intention to buy it. They told me the owner wants to sell it for BD134,000, and I directly paid BD50,000. There was the owner and an employee in the company and I handed the money to them,” the plaintiff told prosecutors.

The American University of Bahrain (AUBH) launched

the second edition of Bahrain’s first nationwide programme “AUBH For A Day”, during which high school seniors expe-rienced a full day as students on campus, giving them a real-time preview of university life.

AUBH welcomed students from over 27 private and pub-lic schools aiming to support a seamless transition to univer-sity for them, beginning their college journey as confident and prepared as possible.

The participants experi-enced college-level classes, different team-building exer-cises, as well as career-guid-ance sessions, and social-ly-distanced extra-curricular activities, while engaging with current students.

To ensure the community’s safety and to abide by the uni-versity’s COVID-19 guidelines, AUBH has piloted the pro-gramme to ensure that there

will only be a limited number of students at a time on campus.

The University aims to transform the taster into a fully accessible program for all high school students once COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed.

AUBH founding president Dr Susan Saxton said: “As any new experience, the first year of university life can prove to be stressful for students. The pandemic has complicated that transition further by pre-venting young adults to have an on-campus experience, worldwide.

“We are thrilled to have been able to offer them a preview of what life as an AUBH student is like, through a memorable, first-hand, fun experience, which will help them be better prepared once they graduate.”

The participants have high-lighted this experience as “epic” stressing the fact that the event was tremendously useful in helping them better shape their decisions, offering them a clearer vision of their univer-sity options in the Kingdom.

AUBH’s launch of the sec-ond edition of the initiative is in keeping with its mission to offer an accessible Ameri-can-style teaching and learn-ing experience in Bahrain, on par with the best universities in the US.

Lebanon asks Saudi Arabia to reconsider ban on its produce

Lebanon said yesterday it hoped Saudi Arabia would

reconsider a ban on its produce imposed over what Riyadh called a rise in drug smuggling, and tasked its interior minister to coordinate with the king-dom to uncover the culprits and prevent a repeat.

The government also asked Lebanon’s public prosecutor to pursue investigations on the issue and keep Saudi officials informed of results, a presi-dency statement said.

The statement was issued after a meeting on the topic be-tween President Michel Aoun and caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab amongst others.

Blaming an increase in drug smuggling, Saudi Arabia an-nounced the ban on Friday, a measure that will add to Lebanon’s severe economic problems. The fruit and vege-

tables trade is worth $24 mil-lion annually. Lebanon is in the throes of a deep financial crisis posing the biggest threat to its stability since the 1975-1990 civil war. Aoun earlier asked Lebanon’s security forces to step up operations against the smuggling, while Diab said Lebanon stood ready to fight trafficking networks with Sau-di Arabia but that a ban would not prevent it.

“We are confident that Saudi Arabia and all the Gulf coun-tries know well that a ban on Lebanese produce will not stop drug smuggling and (that) cooperation between us will help stop these networks,” he said. There was concern that the ban, which took effect on Sunday, would spread to oth-er Gulf states after Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Oman all issued statements in support of the Saudi decision.

Saudi Arabia could save over $200 billion over

the next decade by replac-ing liquid fuel used for do-mestic consumption with gas and renewable energy sources, the finance min-ister said, as the kingdom seeks to cut costs to fund investments.

“One initiative we’re about to finalise is the dis-placement of liquids,” said Finance Minister Moham-med al-Jadaan.

“This programme would represent savings for the government of about 800 billion riyals ($213.34 bil-lion) over the next 10 years which can be utilized for investment.” Saudi Arabia this month signed power purchase agreements with seven new solar projects, part of plans to optimise the energy mix used for elec-tricity production.

“Instead of buying fuel from the international mar-kets at $60 and then selling it at $6 for Saudi utilities, or using some of our quota in OPEC to sell at $6, we’re going to actually displace at least 1 million barrels a day of oil equivalent in the next 10 years and replace it with gas and renewables,” said Jadaan.

Oil fell yesterday on fears that surging COVID-19 cas-

es in India will dent fuel de-mand in the world’s third-big-gest oil importer, while the end of a force majeure on exports from a Libyan terminal and an expected supply increase from OPEC+ added to pressure.

Brent crude was $1.08, or 1.6%, lower at $65.03 a barrel by 1329 GMT. US West Tex-as Intermediate (WTI) crude was down 97 cents, or 1.6%, at $61.17 a barrel.

Both benchmarks fell about 1% last week.

“The market is tending to focus more on the bad news from India and Japan at pres-ent, where the number of new coronavirus cases has risen sharply, prompting increased mobility restrictions to be im-posed,” said Commerzbank analyst Eugen Weinberg.

Japan is the world’s fourth biggest crude oil importer.

India ordered its armed forces yesterday to help tackle surging new coronavirus infec-tions that are overwhelming hospitals, as countries includ-ing Britain, Germany and the

The Indonesian navy was yesterday trying to work

out how it could salvage the remains of a submarine from the bottom of the Bali Sea and retrieve the bodies of the 53 sailors who died onboard.

The German-built KRI Nang-gala-402 was discovered lying on the seabed on Sunday bro-ken into at least three parts, four days after it lost contact while preparing to conduct a torpedo drill.

Grieving relatives gathered on the seashore in Bali on Mon-day to pay their respects to the sailors who perished, and urged the authorities to bring up their

bodies from the depths.Experts say it will be a daunt-

ing task to lift the submarine to the surface from the deep water, requiring specialised sal-vage equipment.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s navy said a retrieval operation was still being discussed with experts and international bod-ies.

“We will analyse the under water pictures and video, the current etc to decide the tech-nology that will be used,” First Admiral Julius Widjojono said.

A sonar scan detected at least three parts of the submarine at a depth of 850 metres (2,789 ft), far beyond Nanggala’s diving range.

India ordered its armed forces yesterday to help tackle surg-

ing new coronavirus infections that are overwhelming hospitals, as countries including Britain, Germany and the United States pledged to send urgent medical aid.

In a meeting with Prime Min-ister Narendra Modi, the Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat said oxygen would be re-leased to hospitals from armed forces reserves, and retired med-ical military personnel would join COVID-19 health facilities.

And where possible, military medical infrastructure will be made available to civilians, a gov-ernment statement said, as new coronavirus infections hit a record peak for the fifth day.

“Air, Rail, Road & Sea; Heav-en & earth are being moved to overcome challenges thrown up by this wave of COVID19,” Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Twitter.

Modi on Sunday urged all citi-zens to get vaccinated and to ex-ercise caution amid what he called a “storm” of infections.

Iran sentences British-Iranian aid worker to a year in jail

An Iranian Revolution-ary court has sentenced British-Iranian aid

worker Nazanin Zaghari-Rat-cliffe to a one-year jail term and she is banned from leav-ing the country for a year, her lawyer told a news website yesterday.

“Nazanin Zaghari was sen-tenced to one year in prison and a one year ban from leav-ing the country on charges of propaganda against the Islam-ic Republic,” Hojjat Kermani told the Emtedad site.

Iran’s judiciary was not im-mediately available to com-ment.

“I don’t think it’s right at all that Nazanin should be sen-tenced to any more time in jail,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told reporters, adding that London was work-ing with the United States on dual-nationals jailed in Iran.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation charity, was arrested at a Tehran air-port in April 2016 and later convicted of plotting to over-throw the clerical establish-ment. She was released from house arrest last month at the

end of a five-year sentence, but immediately ordered back into court to face the new propa-ganda charges.

Lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, who represents Zaghari-Rat-cliffe’s north London constit-uency, said the latest news was “absolutely devastating”, adding on Twitter that it was “another abusive use of her as a bargaining chip.”

Kermani said he would ap-peal the new sentence within 21 days under Iranian law.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s family and the foundation, a charity that operates independently of media firm Thomson Reuters and its news subsidiary Reu-ters, deny the charges.

She spent four years in jail before being released into house arrest in March 2020 during the coronavirus.

Her family says Zaghari-Rat-cliffe is being used as a bar-gaining chip by Tehran, in-cluding over hundreds of mil-lions of dollars owed for an arms order which Britain took payment for in the 1970s and never delivered.

“This is a totally inhumane and wholly unjustified deci-sion,” British foreign minister Dominic Raab said in a state-ment, urging her release.

Emirates says some UAE-based travellers can present COVID-19 medical records digitally

Emirates said on Monday that some passengers

travelling from Dubai could now share coronavirus test results and vaccine certifi-cates digitally with the air-line, removing the need to show paper documents at check-in.

The digital verification of medical records, however, only applies to those who took a PCR test in Dubai or who received their vaccine from a Dubai health regula-tor centre, it said.

Dubai is one of the sev-en emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Like some other emirates, it has its own vac-cine programme, run along-side that of the federal gov-ernment.

At check-in, eligible pas-sengers would need to opt-in to share their test results or vaccine details, which would be provided by Du-bai’s health regulator, the airline said.

Emirates, the world’s biggest long-haul carrier prior to the pandemic, said digital verification would significantly ease travel procedures and reduce wait times.

The medical records, which are linked to a pas-senger’s passport or UAE national ID card, would be removed from the airline’s systems once they were ver-ified at check-in, Emirates said.

copters are spraying ag-ricultural land in northeast Lebanon to help farmers battle swarms of locusts that flew to the country in what a UN agency said was a “very rare” event caused by a change in the wind di-rection.

The agriculture ministry, which is on full alert, said on Monday large numbers of the locusts had been de-stroyed.

There have been no big farming losses so far but there are concerns that more swarms could be blown to the south of Leb-anon, caretaker agriculture minister Abbas Mortada told Reuters.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson denied on Mon-day saying he would rather

bodies piled “high in their thou-sands” than order a third social and economic lock-down to stem corona-virus infections, as reported in a news-paper.

handling of the COVID-19 crisis to questions over who financed the redecoration of his official

ed unidentified sources as say-ing that, in October, shortly after agreeing to a second lockdown, Johnson told a meeting in Down-ing Street: “No more f*****g lock-downs - let the bodies pile high in their thousands.”

Asked whether he had made the remark, Johnson told broad-casters: “No, but again, I think the important thing, I think, that people want us to get on and do as a government is to make sure that the lockdowns work, and they have.”

The Daily Mail did not respond to a request for comment.

Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer said he was aston-ished to read the newspaper’s

report.“If he did say those things, he’s got to explain it,” he told broadcasters.

Johnson did impose a third lockdown, in January, though critics say it could have been avoided had he yielded to pres-sure from senior ministers to make the second lockdown more stringent.

Britain has the world’s fifth largest official COVID-19 death toll, with 127,681 deaths, after the United States, Brazil, Mexico and India, according to Johns Hop-kins University of Medicine.

named Johnson’s former chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, as the source of leaks against the

prime minister. But Cummings denied he was the source and, in comments potentially damaging to the prime minister, cast John-son as incompetent and lacking in integrity.

Johnson, 56, and Cummings, 49, were once close allies who worked closely on the successful ‘Vote Leave’ campaign to take Britain out of the European Union in the 2016 referendum.

Cummings also advised John-son in the 2019 election cam-paign, which won the Conserva-tives their biggest parliamentary majority since 1987, but he left the prime minister’s staff suddenly late last year.

Cummings said Johnson had planned to have donors pay se-cretly for the renovation of his

Downing Street apartment, add-ing that was “unethical, foolish, possibly illegal - and almost cer-tainly broke the rules on proper disclosure of political donations”.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace on Monday declined to confirm or deny if Johnson had been given an undeclared loan from political donors to pay for the renovation of the flat. What mattered now was that Johnson had borne the cost himself, Wallace said.

“Do I think the prime minister is sleazy? No, I don’t,” he told BBC radio. Asked last month about the refurbishment plans, Johnson’s spokeswoman said all donations, gifts and benefits were properly declared, and that no party funds were being used to pay for the refurbishment.

A rare tiger that attacked a villager and damaged a car

in northeast China was caught after an hours-long pursuit by police and forestry officials and will be held for 45 days of ob-servation, state media reported yesterday.

A resident in the village of Linhu in Heilongjiang province, which borders Russia, was sent to hospital for surgery and is in a stable condition after being at-tacked by the big cat on Friday, state broadcaster CGTN reported.

The wild Siberian tiger is a healthy male aged 2 to 3 years and weighing 225 kilograms, according to a Xinhua report posted on social media platform Weibo, citing local officials. The animal will be held for observa-tion and quarantine purposes, it said.

A CGTN video showed the tiger running and knocking a woman down in a road before moving on, with a drone tracking the animal prowling through farmland. The tiger also smashed the window of a car as the occupants tried to escape. They were unharmed.

“It was too late for us to drive away, the tiger came straight at us and broke the window,” the car’s driver said in the CGTN video.

Footage showed the tran-quilized animal later lying mo-tionless in woodland after dark, surrounded by men with flash-lights wrapping it in a plastic sheet.

Militants overrun an army base in northeastern Ni-

geria, killing more than 30 sol-diers before pulling back in the face of air strikes, sources said.

The attackers were believed to belong to the regional off-shoot of Islamic State. They hit the base in Mainok town in northeast Borno state on Sunday afternoon, three sol-diers and a local resident told Reuters.

geria has killed scores of sol-diers and civilians this year. Just over a month ago, about 30 soldiers were killed in four attacks by Islamist militants in northeast Nigeria.A mili-tary spokesman reached by phone said they would issue a statement on the incident but declined to comment further.

The sources told Reuters that 33 soldiers were killed in Sunday’s attack. More soldiers were killed when militants am-bushed reinforcements sent to help, the soldier sources said.

‘Nomadland’ wins big at pandemic Oscars as Zhao makes history

US road movie “Nomad-land” emerged as the big winner at the Oscars on

Sunday with three major priz-es, including a history-making award for director Chloe Zhao, as Hollywood celebrated its most glamorous night with a unique pandemic-era gala.

Zhao’s drama about margin-alized Americans roaming the West in vans was honoured for best picture, director and actress for Frances McDormand, who now is in elite company with her third Academy Award.

No-show Anthony Hopkins pulled a surprise upset to win best actor in the final award of the night, besting sentimental favourite Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer last year.

The unorthodox Oscars cere-mony was moved from a Holly-wood theater to a glammed-up downtown train station to abide by strict Covid-19 protocols, and reunited Tinseltown A-listers for the first time in more than a year.

Zhao, who is the first woman of colour ever honoured as best director, thanked “all the people we met on the road... for teach-ing us the power of resilience and hope, and for reminding us what true kindness looks like.”

With movie theaters closed all year, and blockbuster content delayed, Beijing-born Zhao’s film captured the pandemic zeit-geist with its stunning portrait of the isolated margins of society.

“Please watch our movie on the largest screen possible. And one day very, very soon, take everyone you know into a theat-er, shoulder to shoulder in that dark space, and watch every film that is represented here tonight,” said McDormand.

Zhao is only the second wom-an to win best director after Kathryn Bigelow, who broke

the glass ceiling in 2010 when she won the prize for “The Hurt Locker.”

“What a crazy, once-in-a-life-time journey we went on togeth-er,” said Zhao to her crew and cast including the real-life “no-mads” who played fictionalized versions of themselves in the movie, and were in attendance in Los Angeles.

Zhao, who has drawn contro-versy in China after years-old interviews resurfaced in which she appeared to criticize her country of birth, also quoted classic Chinese poetry in her acceptance speech.

Hopkins’ win at 83 for his shattering portrayal of a de-mentia sufferer in “The Father” makes him the oldest actor to win a competitive Oscar in his-tory. He did not travel to Los Angeles or a London venue to accept the prize.

The film, adapted by French playwright Florian Zeller from his own stage production, also won best adapted screenplay in a category that also included “Nomadland.” Zeller accepted his award from Paris.

References to racism and police violence were threaded throughout the show’s speech-es, starting with actor-director Regina King’s opening mono-logue, in which she mentioned the conviction of a former police officer for the murder of African American man George Floyd.

“If things had gone differently this past week in Minneapolis, I may have traded in my heels for marching boots,” she said.

“Promising Young Woman” won best original screenplay, the night’s first award. Em-erald Fennell, who was seven

months pregnant when she shot the #MeToo revenge thriller, thanked her son who “did not arrive until a couple of weeks af-ter shooting, thank God, because I was crossing my legs.”

Netflix’s “Mank” began the night with the most nominations -- 10 -- but ended for dual wins in technical categories, as did Amazon’s “Sound of Metal” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

“Soul” became Pixar’s lat-est Oscar winner for best ani-mated feature, also picking up best score, while South African aquatic wildlife feature “My Oc-topus Teacher” won best docu-mentary.

‘In the flesh’ The 93rd Oscars began with

a movie-style opening credits sequence, as Regina King strode into the venue clutching a gold statuette.

“Live TV, here we go. Welcome to the 93rd Oscars!” said King.

“And, yes, we are doing it maskless... people have been vaxxed, tested, re-tested, social-ly distanced,” she added, com-paring the show to a movie set.

This year’s Oscars arrived at their Union Station venue two months late due to the pandemic -- organizers have said it would have been “impossible” without the delay.

Before the show, stars paused briefly for pictures and socially distanced interviews on what or-ganizers called a “teeny-tiny red carpet,” where actresses Carey Mulligan and Andra Day dazzled fashion fans in Oscars gold.

An honorary award for the Motion Picture and Television Fund, which has supported struggling actors and crew par-ticularly during the pandem-ic, was awarded at the Oscars’ traditional Hollywood theat-er base. Black entertainment mogul Tyler Perry was also honored.

Saludar turned pro in July 2013 and won his first two fights before losing to Powell Balaba in November 2013. The loss to Balaba was inconclusive as Saludar was forced to retire on his stool after fracturing his hand.

stopped in six rounds by Jap-anese Kosei Tanaka in De-cember 2015 in his first bid for the WBO minimumweight title. Saludar floored Tanaka in the fifth round before suc-cumbing to a vicious body shot from the Japanese in the sixth stanza.

He regrouped and finally became a world champion in July 2018 when he defeated Japanese Ryuya Yamanaka for the WBO minimumweight strap.

Saludar made no mistake this time, knocking down Yamana-ka in the seventh canto on his way to a unanimous decision victory.

The Filipino made only one successful defense before los-ing the WBO title to Mendez in August 2019.

Saludar traveled to Mendez’s backyard, Puerto Rico, sans his regular trainer (visa issues) and manager (family-related emer-gency). With barely anyone to guide him, Saludar yielded the title to Mendez.

Sprinter Knott edges closer to Tokyo Olympics

Filipino-American sprinter Kristina Knott closed in

on a Tokyo Olympics berth fol-lowing her fifth-place perfor-mance at the 2021 LSU Alumni Gold at Baton Rouge, Louisi-ana over the weekend.

In one of her best showings in nine months, Knott checked home 11.28 seconds in the women’s 100-meter dash to get 13/100ths of a second closer to the qualifying standard time of 11.15 seconds for this year’s Olympics.

The 5-foot-6 Knott’s recent 100m performance improved from her recent feat at the Pure Springs Invitational in Florida two weeks ago where she posted 11.33sec for silver.

It was also a hairline from her current national record of 11.27sec – the same mark that shattered Lydia De Vega-Mer-cado’s long-standing record in the said event.

Knott ’s clocking, which came close to a national re-cord-breaking performance in August last year, was good for fifth place, behind Alelia Hobbs, who earned first place in 10.91 seconds.

“We took a week off and worked on things. So, now it’s time to rest and recover and get back to it,” Knott’s coach Rohsaan Griffin said.

An hour later, the dou-ble-gold medalist at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games also raced in the women’s 200m Olympic Deve category, clocking 23.17 seconds for a bronze-medal finish and moving closer to the 22.80sec Olympic standard time.

“It was great anytime you run that close to both of your personal bests, which are the national records. It’s great,” added Griffin, who added Knott did not have enough time to rest in between the 100-meters and the 200-me-

ters because the schedules were too close.

“She did run 11.28 which is 0.01 off of her personal best 11.27 and less than a hour lat-er, because they moved to a rolling schedule, she ran 23.17 in the 200 for 0.16 off of her personal best in that event as well.”

Meanwhile, 32-year-old Fil-American Eric Cray also posted his season-best per-formance in the men’s 400m hurdles at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa also over the weekend, but was still three seconds slower than the Olym-pic standard time.

Cray, who seeks a second Olympic appearance after competing in the 2016 Rio Games, clocked 51.20sec to better last week’s time of 51.61sec in Texas. The Olympic standard time, however, is at 48.90sec.

Both Knott and Cray still have chances of hitting the standard times with races lined up in the coming weeks.

Knott is set to fly to Europe to be in the Meeting Inter-national Citta Di Savona on May 13, the first scheduled European outdoor meet this summer.

son admitted they are four or five years behind Manchester City after his hopes of ending the club’s trophy drought were ruined in a League Cup final defeat by Pep Guardiola’s dom-inant side on Sunday.

Aymeric Laporte’s late goal sealed a 1-0 win for City to leave Spurs still waiting for their first silverware since 2008.

City were far the better team and could have had the game won twice over before halftime had they converted a few of the many chances they created at will against a poor Tottenham side who managed only two goal attempts to their oppo-nents’ 21.

Manama powered into the final of the 2021 Khalifa

bin Salman Cup last night fol-lowing a 92-75 victory over Al Hala in a decisive game three that was put off from Sunday evening.

The result earned Manama a 2-1 victory over their rivals in their best-of-three Golden Square semi-final series. They now have a return trip to the tournament final where they will take on cup holders Al Ahli.

Yesterday, only the fourth quarter was played after the game was abandoned on Sun-day due to technical problems with the scoreboard at the ven-ue. Manama were leading 66-51 at the time the contest was called off at the end of the third quarter.

It was the second time that evening that the game faced a lengthy delay. Earlier, with the scores tied at 29-apiece with

just under four minutes to go in the second period, play had to be stopped due to the electronic issues.

After action resumed, Ma-nama took control and never wavered. They went ahead 39-36 at the half and then used a 27-15 third quarter to blow the close game wide open.

They then did enough in the final canto yesterday to seal the win.

American professional Earl Clark top scored for Manama with 32 points while grabbing

16 rebounds and dishing out seven assists.

Skipper Mohammed Hussan added 26 points, including five three-pointers, while Ahmed Najaf came off the bench to contribute 11.

For Hala, Xavier Gibson from the US and Hasan Gerashi each finished with 18 points, while Hussain Salman added 16 and Sayed Kadhem Majed had 10.

The Khalifa bin Salman Cup final is scheduled to be played on Thursday with a 9.30pm tip-off.


Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain to table regional racing talks in 2021

Racing leaders in the three Gulf states believe there is room for a more coordinated approach to the sport in the region

The leaders of three major Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) horseracing juris-

dictions are set to begin a dia-logue aimed at the development of a coordinated regional racing offering.

The racing clubs in Saudi Ara-bia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain are to schedule talks in the coming months covering topics such as coordination in equine quarantine and ease of travel as well as race scheduling and the sharing of knowledge and information among own-ers and breeders in the three countries.

Racing leaders in the three Gulf states believe there is room

for a more coordinated approach to the sport in the region which will benefit all parties and even-tually expand to include other countries in the wider GCC.

Each of the three jurisdictions to launch the talks already stage high profile international rac-ing. The Bahrain International Trophy is held in November, The Saudi Cup is at the end of February and the well-estab-lished Dubai World Cup Carni-

val season and Dubai World Cup race day spans from January to March.

The initial talks will take place between the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia Bahrain’s Rashid Equestrian & Horse Racing Club and the Dubai Racing Club.

“With an increasingly attrac-tive racing offering already tak-ing place across the region, we decided as a group that it was time to focus on ways to open up

our racing to each other while simultaneously making it more attractive for internationals to come here, facilitating the progression of racing standards across the entire region,” Prince Bandar bin Khalid Al Faisal, Chairman of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, said.

“We are in the preliminary

stages of these talks which will initially take place between Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates but we are laying the foundations for a Gulf-wide cooperation that will benefit all of us and, we hope, the racing world at large, offering summer and winter racing in the Middle East.”

His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain’s Rashid Equestrian and Horse Racing Club High Committee, said:

“Horse racing holds a special place in the hearts of sports fans in the region and their shared passion is a catalyst for engage-ment at all levels to develop a mutually beneficial program both within the Gulf and outside the region.

“We are truly excited by the prospect of an integrated region-al racing schedule that draws upon established strengths to elevate standards and compe-tition. Whilst discussions may be at an early stage, the scale of opportunity gives reason to be optimistic.”

“This will contribute to deliv-ering the aspirations and desires of all involved parties within the racing industry, including owners, jockeys and trainers, creating a new roadmap to over-coming obstacles and facilitating progression.”

The Chairman of the Dubai Racing Club pointed out that this ancient sport occupies a special place in the hearts of the people of the Gulf.

“This is a welcome step that will be promoted globally through the international rac-es hosted by the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Bah-rain and will continue to fuel the rapid growth we have seen in the industry at regional level,” he said.
