FOREWORD
Port Hedland is a small town at the top left hand corner of Australia. It is on the coastline of the Great Sandy Desert. The nearest city is Denpassar, in Indonesia, a two hour flight away. It is the port serving the iron ore rich hinterland: it is hot and dry, and the population has a high turnover. The Amazing Hedland Scratch Band is a scratch band. We play traditional Anglo-Celtic and Australian dance music to any that will listen, and even get the odd dance to run. Mainly though, we are a group of people who enjoy playing music. All that wish to play are welcome. Often as many as fourteen of us are on stage, but this can be offset by the times we struggle to raise four! And where did the music come from?. To a large extent, the music here is the music being played in Brisbane in the 1980’s. Some of this has been written from memory, and errors will be present. Wherever possible, I have sourced more authoritative materiel, and, to a large extent this has been from the Internet. Acknowledgement is made particularly to the compilers of the Nottingham Music Database, whose names are seen scattered liberally at the music headings. Also Richard Robinson and Ceolas, who also make their music freely available on the Internet. A few tunes have also been taken from Max Klubel’s Music for Australian Folk Dancing; Begged Borrowed And Stolen; and Collector’s Choice by Peter Ellis. These sources have been used as a basis, being modified by myself, to fit the style with which I am familiar. And how did I do it? All materiel is readily available on the Internet. The core of the system is a programme obtainable from the abc Home Page, called abc2win. The programme uses a keyboard code for notes on a music score, providing a very compact means of music storage. Hundreds of tunes can be downloaded in one or two minutes in this format, then reconstructed. It is also easy to write the music for this programme - G puts a quaver on the low G line, G2 a crotchet on the high G line, etc. Another programme, abcmus, will play the music for you to check, and add the chords. As a result, the chords here are rather mundane, although this can be altered if wished. Once the score is written, it is transferred into a publisher programme, I use Microsoft, and can be fitted to a page and printed. The only thing you need a lot of, is time! Time to check and alter tunes, and to transpose when necessary. The notes and words at the end have been gleaned from three main sources. The digital tradition has provided most of the words, and a few of the tunes. David Johnson’s book ‘Bush Dance (Published by The Bush Music Club), has a lot of information on the tunes. I have also used The Bushwacker’s ‘Australian Song Book’ for some words and tunes. I need hardly mention that this book is designed mainly as an aide memoir for old and new band members, and not for general distribution. Almost all these tunes are traditional. Some are not, and may be covered by copyright. I have no original sources, and acknowledgements are not made in the sources I have used. My apologies to copyright holders if there have been infringements.
PBR Port Hedland Sept 1997
Foreword to second Edition
This edition has been extensively revised, to reflect the new music which we, and the Palm Court Orchestra are playing.
I have endeavoured to correct mistakes. In particular, the computer generated chords have been removed and replaced with suggested chords from the original sources. Thanks must also go to Colleen’s hard work in providing chords were not available from those sources.
A new computer programme has resulted in better note placement, and has enabled a page layout making better use of the available space.
I stress that a lot of these tunes are still copyright. They are provided in this book merely for convenience to band members: it is not for sale.
Layout has been modified as follows:
Mainly Palm Court, starting with waltzes Mainly Scratch Band, starting with medleys, then other odd tunes we have used
Novelty tunes, like the Hokey Pokey
Special occasions – national anthem etc
Irish songs in alphabetical order, tunes 200 - 299
Christmas carols, again in in alphabetical order, tunes 300 - 399
I hope this layout proves practical.

Port Hedland July, 1999
Foreword to third Edition This will be the last edition produced by me.
It has been greatly expanded, to become a selection of tunes, in medley format as far as possible.
The layout is not substantially different to previously. I have tried to group our usual tunes at the beginning. The Irish songs are as per our new St Patrick’s day tunebook, including the keys we selected.
It is also our farewell to Colleen and Brian Digby. The first copy has been presented to Colleen on their departure from Port Hedland.
PBR Port Hedland, March, 2002.
