Hebrews 721 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever.’ ”22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

26 Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

28 For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

The Great High PriestHebrew 4:14 - 8

Hebrew is written mainly to believers who are Jewish

They are struggling with this new faithJesus is better than angels, than Moses

and better than the high priest

Page 6: Hebrews 7

What is a high priest? He is the people’s representative

He is humanHe makes atonement once yearlyOnly he can enter the inner place

He atoned for unwitting sinNot for all sin

Page 7: Hebrews 7

Hebrews 415 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Page 8: Hebrews 7

Jesus is better because…He can sympathize with us

He allows us to come to the inner placeThe inner sanctuary is no longer just for

the high priest

Page 10: Hebrews 7

Hebrews 5Every high priest is selected from among men and is appointed to represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

Page 11: Hebrews 7

4 No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest.

Page 12: Hebrews 7

Jesus is better because…He was selected by God the fatherHe gave himself as a sacrifice for us

Jesus gave the perfect gift

Page 13: Hebrews 7

Hebrews 619 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf.

Page 14: Hebrews 7

Jesus is better because…Jesus brings salvation

He takes us into the inner sanctuary

Page 15: Hebrews 7

Hebrews 711 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come—one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron?

Page 16: Hebrews 7

18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

Page 17: Hebrews 7

Jesus is better because…The law of Moses was good but it

was not perfectThe law pointed out the

imperfection but could not fix it

Hebrews 727 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

Jesus is better because…Jesus is a perfect high priest

Jesus is foreverJesus is powerful

Hebrews 87 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people and said: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

Page 22: Hebrews 7

10 …I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

Page 23: Hebrews 7

12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.

Page 24: Hebrews 7

Jesus is better because…Jesus has made a new covenant

A covenant not based on works but written in our hearts and minds A covenant that forgives all sins

Page 25: Hebrews 7

Putting it all togetherJesus tore the temple curtain

He exposes the inner sanctuaryWe can now enter the inner sanctuary

But more than that, Jesus is better because He welcomes us into the

throne of God

Page 26: Hebrews 7
Page 27: Hebrews 7

Putting it all togetherJesus is sympathetic to our plight

He knows the limitations of humanity first hand

Jesus is better because He gets us

Page 28: Hebrews 7

Putting it all togetherJesus is better because he can

Jesus is not limited by our sinfulnessJesus paid the price for us once and

Page 29: Hebrews 7

Jesus is better than angelsJesus is better than Moses and all the
