FOREWORD

A great Hassidic Rabbi, Dov Ber of Mezhirech, wrotepVtP a^y XTI niNi mx *?D "each and every Hebrew letteris a world in its own." Indeed, those who are well-versedin Biblical exegesis are well aware of the importance ofevery letter of the Bible. One letter added to a word ormissing from a word elicited cpntroversy and the needfor interpretation of possible hidden messages for ourBiblical and Talmudic scholars. And thus we havechosen to ñame this reader

Dedicated toSarah and Jeffrey

OLAM SHALEM

It would be justifiable to ask "Why another reader?""In what ways does this reader differ from similar booksused in the primary grades of our schools or in adulteducation courses for beginners?" To answer thesequestions we must explain the contení of the book andthe audience to whom we are directing this reader. The first part pf a1?^ oVi» features a synthesis of mecha-nical (phonetic) and comprehensive reading and pre-pares the student for fluency in the reading of theprayerbook or any Hebrew text. The second part (frompage 28 on) consists of selected passages, often in anabbreviated fprm, from the Siddur. Thus the student, whether a child, a teenager or an adult, will have anopportunity to particípate actively and comfortably at asynagogue service, community gatherings or in a reli-gious home celebration.cbv oVis can easily be adopted by teachers, whether inone-day-a-week schools or for Talmud Torah students,as a first reader and subsequently as a prayerbook forJúnior Cpngregation. However, it is primarily aimed atstudents in communities where no teachers are avail-able and/or for adults, anywhere, who had no oppor-tunity in earlier years to learn how to reád Hebrew butwould like to do it now, without the need to attendregular classes. The uniqueness of the Olam Shalem isthat, with the reader and the cassette tapes provided, you can learn how to read Hebrew fluently, how to makethe blessing when you are called up to the Torah, howto recite the Kaddish, how to sing the grace after meal, the Hatikvah or blessings for Haftarah, and many otherbasic prayers or songs. All this you will be able toaccomplish with the OLAM SHALEM booklet, the cas-settes and your cassette player.

The cassette tapes will be your guide from page 1 tothe last page of the reader. It will instruct and guide youat every line of every page how to proceed. You will beable to test and re-test your progress and will alwaysbe able to go back until you have mastered each andevery letter on each and every page. You can listen tothese tapes at home, at the office, at the cottage oreven while driving your car. Most of the prayers (from page 28 on) are sung on thecassette so you will not only learn how to read them butalso how to sing them in the synagogue or at home.It is possible that the tune of certain prayers will bedifferent in the synagogue you attend, however, if youhave learned the basics it will be neither difficult toadapt to the new tune, ñor will it be difficult to followthe services from more elabórate prayerbooks found inthe synagogue or in your home. Good luck!

The arduous yet pleasurable task of putting togetherthis text and the accompanying tapes was greatly fácilitated by the assistance of many individuáis, but I savespecial thanks for a small handful of people.I owe a debt of gratitude to my colleague, Steven Ain,for his encouragement of this work from the momentthe ¡dea was conceived. I am also grateful to a formerstudent of mine, Sari Cohén, for the long hours of workshe put into correcting and editing the script, and forserving as one of the readers in the audio portion ofOlam Shalem. The other English reader is Harvey Atkin, whose rich voice, I am sure, will inspire and encourageyou to do your best work in progressing through OlamShalem. In preparing the tapes I derived the most enjoymentfrom listening to the beautiful voice of my good friend,Ben Steinberg, who did the singing portion with remark-able care and accuracy. To him I express my deepthanks. Finally, I would like to thank my son, Jeffrey, for hiscontinuous support and valuable comments and advice
