Hebburn was very dierent back in 1912,

the year the ootball club was ormed. Te

collieries that had changed it rom a small

agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty

grimy industrial town were nearing peak employ-

ment o 1,864 men; the shipyards launched by An-

drew Leslie were in ull vigour; and the town, eleven

years earlier, had welcomed a diminutive Frenchman

    called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, which

initially employed just 50 men, in the ormer dye

actory next to St Aloysiuss church. At its peak, Rey-

rolles would employ 12,000 men rom a wide range

o backgrounds, religions and cultures, and export to70 countries being known worldwide.

Te company also started a ootball team, and, en-

couraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph

Carr-Ellison, another amous name in Hebburn his-

tory, he provided the sports ground on which team

still plays on in the Northern League. Te ootball

team ormed in 1912 were elected to the second

division o the Jarrow and District Junior League.

Tere had been plenty o ootball teams in the beore

1912, most notably Hebburn Argyle who kicked

o in 1882 by Father oner, the priest at St Aloy-

siuss. Te town had so many Scots, they became

known as the yneside Highlanders. Pre-World War

1 derby games with Jarrow would attract crowds o

8,000. Te Geordie town also had shinty and curling

clubs and even an annual Highland Games whichwas organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

Tis 1912 team progressed, and ourished in the

1930s, ollowed by a wartime season in the North

Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in

1943, and then returned to the Northern Combi-

nation where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60,

Reyrolles as we were still known as, had another

season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League

but nished bottom with just eight points.

Te yneside club then had 28 pretty indierent

seasons in the Wearside League, though they won

the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup

    in 1968.

In 1988 the name was changed to Hebburn and an

application was made to join the Northern League

though it was beore the days o automatic promo-tion and relegation and there wasnt a vacancy.

Te ground was improved, other clubs canvassed

and then Hebburn got a lucky break when North

Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play

    elsewhere.

Te team which had nished h in the Wearside

League and then played its rst Northern Leaguegame on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton

Comrades, beore winning promotion and the Dur-

ham Challenge Cup in 1992 beore being relegated

contentiously or ailing to meet ground criteria.

Te club then won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

In the 2011-12 season, Hebburn own reached the

FA Cup ourth qualiying round and a dream tie

at neighbours Gateshead, rom whom they wereseparated by 125 league places. Tis was the clubs

urthest ever run in the competition and the Hornets

also secured promotion to the Northern League

Division 1 or their centenary year.

    4/24

Great to see the lads back to orm with

two excellent victories. First the 4-2 win

at Marske ollowed by a tremendous

perormance against FA Vase semi-nalists Shildon

    on uesday evening.

Shildon are a class side yet we deservedly took

the lead in the rst hal and added to this shortly

aer hal time; both goals great eorts rom Stu

    Nicholson and Paul Gardiner.

    Shildon were not going

    to lie down and

they were back onlevel terms midway

    through the second

    hal. Hebburn raised

    their game again and

    were rewarded with

    the winner in the

    last minute with a ne

    eort rom Wayne

    Gredziak.

We welcome our opponents today who have made

the short journey north rom Durham City and

hope they have a pleasant aernoon on South

yneside. Te Citizens have beaten us twice this

season, in the league and in the Durham Challenge

Cup so we will be looking to secure a victory today.

Durham City dropped down rom the Evo-Stik

league this season and have had mixed results. Tey

are now just above us in the league having played

    more games.

We have managed to ull most o our xtures

during the dreadul winter and early spring and aertoday have one home game le against Spennymoor

    own next Saturday.

We also extend a warm welcome to our three match

ofcials and wish them an incident and controversy

    ree aernoon.

Finally, we would like to send best wishes rom

everyone at Hebburn own to Stuart Nicholson whogets married today. We wish him and his new bride

all the best but hope it does not aect his orm as he

is on re at the moment.

    The DugoutVIEW FROM...

Well, a superb perormance rom the lads against

a very good Shildon side and another three

    valuable points.

I spoke to the lads only briey beore the game to say

that we had returned to our old ways o playing against

Bishops and Marske and that i they repeated that against

Shildon I believed they would get a result. And wow, they

didnt let me down. Mind you we do it the Hebburn way, hearts in mouth, take a deserved 2-0 lead, throw it away

and then snatch a winner in the last minute rom Gredz

who enjoyed it as much as anyone against his old club.

Te lads rom back to ront were brilliant and showed

just why I brought them to the club and that we have

hopeully come out o our bad spell and can nish the

    season on a high.

Te only disappointment out o the game was or John

oomey. He has made a great recovery rom a broken ankle

and has made a ew brie appearances lately but he started

the game and unortunately broke down aer 5 minutes.

However aer a visit to hospital its not as bad as we all

eared and we should see the Pennywell Pele back in a

Hebburn strip in about 2 weeks.

We ace Durham today without Dean and Stu Nicholson. Stu

is getting married this morning and all the lads have been

down to see him beore his big moment, having our picture

taken with the gruesome twosome (I mean Dean and Stu)

We would have loved to all have gone to the aer party but

unortunately Durham couldnt grant our request o a Fridaynight game but we will be heading along to the night time to

    join in the celebrations.

So best wishes or the uture to the new Mr and Mrs Stuart

Nicholson does this poor lass really know what she is

    getting into.

Let us hope or a good game and we can join them in good

    spirits aerwards.

hen speaking to someone rom south

o York, the answer to their second

    question aer telling someone you

hail rom Durham is usually about een milessouth o Newcastle. However, whilst making

the usual introductions one does as a resher,

one knowledgeable chaps second question was

do Durham City still play at that nice ground

down by the river? Aer gathering my thoughts I

had to inorm him that alas they did not, and had

done was to become a norm in the subsequent

years or various clubs; moving rom an old ground

with character and location to a purpose built

arena on the edge o an industrial estate.

Tat nice ground by the river that he spoke o

was Ferens Park, named aer Alderman Ferens,

the President o the club who purchased the

ground or Durham to play at aer reorming in

1950. wo seasons later City made their Northern

League bow, nishing 12th o 14 clubs in theirrst season beore improving to 4th place in

their second. It was in this era that City had

their biggest attendance when 7,000 packed in to

Ferens Park to watch City lose 0-3 at the hands o

    ranmere Rovers.

In 1993-94 Durham City won the Northern League

or the rst time, and under ambitious Chairman

Bob Kerry they signalled their intent to accept theirplace in the Northern Premier League. However, at

this time Ferens Park did not meet the criteria or

promotion and the new ground that was being built

on Belmont Industrial Estate on the outskirts o the

city was suering delays in construction. As a result

City were reused permission to take their place

in the Northern Premier League and remained in

the Northern League, having to ground share with

Chester-le-Street or the 1994-95 season whilst NewFerens Park was completed.

City did move in to New Ferens Park or the start

o the 1995-96 Northern League season but were

    unable to replicate

their previous achievement in winning the rst

division until 2007-08. Tis time City did meet

the ground requirements and they took their

place in the Unibond First Division North or the

2008-09 season. Not satised with a season oconsolidation, City strengthened their team with

a number o ormer youngsters released rom the

regions proessional ranks, and won the Unibond

First Division North at their rst attempt. Tey

strengthened urther in the close season ahead o

their debut season in the Unibond Premier, but

were dealt a devastating blow when the Unibond

administrators announced that City would not be

allowed to take up any place in the ConerenceNorth or even the Unibond play-os due to their 3G

    articial pitch.

At the start o the 2006-07 season Durham City

    3G or nby James Williams

installed a 3G articial pitch at New Ferens Park, in

order to increase revenues rom hiring it out, and

also to reduce wasted expenditure due to match

postponements during the harsh winter months. Te

3G pitch installed by Support in Sport (SIS) camewith a 1,700 hour estimated lietime as opposed to

a conventional grass pitch which has an estimated

usage o 300 hours. City calculated that the pitch

would last a minimum o six seasons and be used by

all teams at the club, rom the seniors down through

the youth teams o both boys and girls. In addition

to this, the pitch became a revenue stream in its own

right, with then League wo club Darlington hiring

the pitch or training when their own practice groundwas out o action as a result o inclement weather.

City drew their rst game in the Unibond Premier,

a solid start as the new signings were still gelling

together. However, it was aer the rst game that

City were told that they would not be promoted or

allowed to play in the play-os due to their pitch.

FIFA are big ans o the articial pitches and they are

approved or use in UEFA competitions, howeverthe authorities in England have diering views.

City knew rom when they rst installed it that they

were not permitted or FA Cup competition, during

which time they had to play their games at nearby

Brandon United. Whilst the articial surace was

allowed in the Northern League and the Unibond

League, the Conerence divisions had dierent rules.

On hearing this news, Durhams main sponsor

withdrew rom their nancial support rom theclub, apparently not happy at a ceiling being

placed on Citys potential progress and

thereore their exposure. As a result

    Durham had to

    ot 3G

release the registration o all their

rst team playing squad, as they had no budget

with which to pay the players their expenses and

    appearance ees.

It was expected that the club would drop back to

the Northern League, but ollowing a meeting o the

committee it was decided that the club would ull

its xtures in the Unibond Premier League. City

draed in youngsters rom their youth academy

that is run by ormer Sunderland and QPR deender

Richard Ord. In their rst game

ollowing the dissolution o the rst

    team squad Durham travelled to

    Stockbridge Park Steels where their

young team was beaten 6-0. Tis

was to become the theme or the

season or City and their young

team. Te next our games saw City

    lose 7-2, 4-1, 4-0 and 8-0. As the

season continued so did the heavy

deeats, but City managed to ulltheir xtures against all the odds. In

reality the team was mainly made up

o 17 and 18 year olds with little playing

experience, bolstered on occasion by a smattering

o players brought in rom the Northern League. On

23rd January 2010 City travelled to Boston United, a

club that had been playing league ootball less than

three years previously. City lost 10-0 and their plight

was brought to the attention o the nation on SkySports agship show Soccer Saturday, whose host

Je Stelling was rooting or Durham to register a

point having lost all o their games. On 13th March

2010 Stelling and City ans were able to cheer the rst

points o the season ollowing a 2-1 away win at FC

United o Manchester, the club ormed by Manchester

ans disgruntled with the nancial burden placed on

the club ollowing the Glazer amily takeover. City

won their next game as well, a 4-3 home victory over

Whitby own, but ollowing a point deduction they

nished the season back on zero aer losing the

remainder o their games, completing the season with

a 6-2 away deeat at Buxton.

It was widely expected that City would drop back

down to the Northern League and begin to rebuild,

but the club decided to stay and ght in the Evo-Stik

First Division North, the new name or the league

they had won just 12 months earlier. Last summer

the club resigned their place in the Evo-Stik and

    reapplied or the Northern League,

in part due to their struggle to

attract crowds to New Ferens Park.

    Durham is almost equidistant rom

    Newcastle and Sunderland and the

split o ootball ans in Durham itsel

is pretty equal, i not slightly in avour

o the red and whites. One reason

    some Newcastle ans have previously

been reluctant to support the club is theprevious tie-in between Sunderland AFC

and City, who wore Sunderland away shirts

and hosted the Premier League sides reserve team.

Having lived in Durham or over 28 years (minus

a break or university) I have not once seen any

advertisement or Durham City. In pubs and

chip shops throughout the North East I have seen

adverts or Northern League games, NorthernAlliance games, Wearside League games and

Sunday league games, but never one that eatures

the name Durham City. Now is the time or City to

grab the ans that are becoming disillusioned and

priced out o higher level ootball and bring them

in the club. Unlikely as it seemed back in August

2009, the City o Durham still has a ootball team to

    be proud o.

James Williamsis a Durham City and Newcastle United fan whose forthcoming book,Northern League Rambles, documents his travels to every Northern League groundduring the 2011-12 season. His blog is footyramblings.wordpress.com

When the Tird Division North kicked

o its opening season in 1921, Durham

    City, Ashington and Darlington were

among the twenty member clubs. It was a meteoric

    two in the North-Eastern.

Te Citizens lasted seven years in the Football

League, dropping back into the North Eastern aer

altogether, reorming or a two-season spell in the

success in the league, winning the championship by

seven points only to be denied promotion when work

on a purpose-built stadium the h home ground

in the clubs history - wasnt completed on time.

Six years aer reaching the semi-nal o the FA Vase,

there were no such problems in the summer o 2008,Durhams second title seeing the club break 100

points in winning thirty-two and drawing six o their

Citys upward movement came to a sudden, almost

catastrophic halt when the 3G pitch at New FerensPark was declared unsuitable or Conerence ootball.

Without the prospect o any urther promotion,

the clubs main sponsor withdrew his backing and

Durham were orced to eld a team o teenagers

rom a local academy. A six-point deduction meant

the club nished the season on a total o zero points,

winning the rst o only two league victories at FC

United o Manchester in mid-March and amassing a

    negative goal dierence o -141.

Consolidating back in the Evostik North, City

nished a creditable ninth last season but took the

decision to drop back down to the Northern League

due to operating costs and the continuing struggle

to attract spectators. Tis year has been one o

consolidation, Adam Furness team currently sitting

eleventh in the table with y-three points rom

orty-two games. Te Hornets have met the Citizenstwice so ar, losing 4-2 in the league and 2-0

in the Durham Challenge Cup. We hope

or more goals this aernoon and or

the three points to stay at Hebburn.
