These include: Darker for longer – in the deepest depths of winter, it can get dark as early as 4pm. Always wear your hi-vis tabard so you can be seen by all airport users. Frosted windscreens – the colder temperatures increase the risk of frost on our car windscreens, both at home and at work. Always take time to fully clear your windscreen before you set off. Cooler temperatures – working for long periods in the cold can slow down your reaction times and cloud your judgement. Take regular breaks to warm up and refuel your body. Follow these golden rules to help prevent accidents: Always inspect your vehicle before you start your duties. Make sure all your lights are working and that your brakes are fully functional. Always clear your windscreen of ice and snow before you move off. Always stick to the speed limit but drive to the road conditions too. Drive below the speed limit if there is ice, snow or slush on the road as your braking action will be affected. Drive with caution and leave a larger gap between you and the vehicle in front. Dress for the weather conditions. Many thin layers of clothing will keep you warmer than one thick jumper or jacket. Take regular breaks to get a chance to warm up and refuel. It starts with all of us

Living and working in the UK can sometimes feel like we spend a lot of time in the dark, cold and wet – especially during winter months. This type of environment can bring additional risks to our everyday lives that we don’t normally experience during spring and summer.

With the longer, darker nights and inclement weather we generally see an increase in airside vehicle collisions. With the most severe types of incidents (Cat B) occurring more frequently in November and January.

Later…

Right, let’s get this day started…

Stupid frost!

LESSONS LEARNED:Follow these tips to prevent a similar incident

Clear your windscreen before you drive – at home and at work.

Make sure your tyres are in good condition to ensure you have enough grip on the roads.

Spray de-icer on windscreens to defrost it faster.

Drive according to weather and road conditions. If speed limits are unsafe to travel at, then drive below them.
