eLearning Programme: Distributed VLE Call 3/10
Joint Information Systems Committee
Distributed VLE Call 3/10
Seeking projects to implement technical work to widen the range of functionality the virtual learning environment (VLE) can provide in an interoperable way so as to meet identified user needs.
2 strands:
– Shorter technical rapid innovation projects
– Longer institutional pilots
Joint Information Systems Committee
Particularly interested in projects which address:
Extending the functionality and flexibility of the VLE to meet the needs of particular disciplines or groups of users
Making better use of data gathered in one system within another system
Allowing for reuse and open publishing of learning materials; linking with an institutional repository
Enabling the VLE to be more easily used for non-traditional courses, such as short courses, roll-on/roll-off, etc
Enabling relevant data from the VLE and student record systems to be used within other systems such as e-portfolios
Making use of usage data from student-facing systems to improve courses and learner support (academic and support staff are the targeted user group)
Making use of usage data to aid resource discovery, communication and learning strategies (learners are the primary user group)
Joint Information Systems Committee
Theme A: Technical rapid innovation projects
5up to
6 months
projects
Technical rapid innovation projects
will design and deliver light-weight
solutions to one or more priority
user needs by widening the range
of functionality the VLE can
provide in an interoperable way.
Start date: 1 July 2010
End date: 31 December 2010
up to
£30,000per project
Joint Information Systems Committee
Theme B: Institutional pilots
3up to
18 months
projects
Institutional pilots will review their virtual
learning environment and related systems to
establish to what extent they meet the current
and projected needs of the wide range of
users in the institution and beyond, and
implement technical work to widen the range
of functionality the VLE can provide in an
interoperable way.
Start date: 1 July 2010
End date: 31 December 2011
up to
£100,000per project
Joint Information Systems Committee
Expectations: all projects
All projects should have already gathered some evidence of user needs or desired efficiencies to point to areas in which changes are needed to the institutionally-provided learning environment and related administration and library systems.
Projects will maintain a blog or a wiki which can be consumed as an RSS feed
All staff to work on the projects funded by this call must already be in place. It is anticipated that project activity will be complementary to work underway or planned at institutions
Joint Information Systems Committee
Expectations: institutional pilots
We expect all institutional pilots to deploy the widgets developed (note: we would also be keen to see the technical rapid innovation projects do this too).
Institutional pilot projects should have an existing analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of their VLE and related systems, which points to key areas for improvement. The first phase of these projects will be spent developing a full understanding and description of the issues identified in project proposals and the technical and process changes necessary to implement them.
