My position requires fact-finding, surveillance, and case-finding in the field. I collect data on the index case and their contacts. Depending upon the nature of the suspected disease or event, my investigation may include direct observation, interviewing cases, performing a physical assessment, collecting specimens, and reviewing/interpreting available lab data. I also collect data that supports the development of interventions at multiple levels of prevention. Based on the conclusions of the problem, and its causes, I will assess whether the threat to the health of the individual poses significant risk to others. I also enter data into the State surveillance system and complete the required documentation and follow up according to State and National guidelines.

Average yearly middle school population was 850, and the students and their needs were very diverse, ranging from the physical to the emotional. My goal was to assist our support staff team with advancing the wellbeing, academic success, and life-long achievement of our students. As a school nurse, I worked diligently to facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promoted health and safety; intervened with actual and potential health problems; provided case management services; and actively collaborated with others in my building, as well as my department, to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
