Heat & TemperatureNOT the same thing
Heat (Thermal Energy) is produced from the movement of the particles in a substance.
Thermal energy depends on 2 factors:-# of particles-how fast they move (temperature)
SolidsHave a lower thermal energy b/c their particles don’t move very much
GasesHave a higher
thermal energy b/c their particles move
a lot
The effect of # of particles on Thermal Energy/Heat
Which will have more thermal energy?a) Many slow moving particles b) Few slow moving particles
Answer: ASince they’re both slow moving,
more slow moving particles will have more thermal energy (heat) than
fewer particles would.
Temperature tells you how fast the particles are moving.
At higher temperatures, particles are moving fast
Particles move slower at lower temperatures
So, Temperature is a measure of heat. Units (°C)

What will have more thermal energy/heat?
a) Particles at 15°Cb) Particles at 65°C
Answer: BSince particles move faster at higher
temperatures, the particles at 65° will have more thermal energy (heat).
Heat can be transferred from one area to another
The transfer happens from a warm area to a colder area
