Unfortunately dark coloured roofs soak up the Sun’s energy getting hotter and hotter as the day progresses. When the roof space becomes superheated at up to 90°C on a 35°C day, the temperature of rooms below can become unbearable even with insulation. Air conditioning is overworked and temperature extremes detrimentally affect the durability and longevity of the whole roof structure. Given the effect dark roof colours have on interior house temperature, it is surprising that dark colours make up more than 75% of the colours used in our suburbs. Insulation helps, although once the heat is inside the roof space, ceiling insulation only delays the heat transfer process. The best method is to prevent the roof space heating up in the first place, by reflecting heat away from the roof surface. If the surface of the roof is prevented from getting very hot the rooms below are kept cooler reducing cooling costs due to lower air conditioning energy consumption over the life time of the building. Keeping your home cool in hot weather is also becoming increasingly expensive due to rising energy costs, servicing and maintenance. Air conditioning also adds to greenhouse emissions and uses valuable natural resources damaging our environment.

On the hunt for a cooler Roof Coating?

White, light pastel and silver roofs have always been the best colours for the Australian environment, because they reflect the Sun’s heat. However these colours are not always complimentary to house design. In some cases light coloured and reflective roofs are not permitted by Council planning controls. These controls are intended to prevent glare for neighbours and for improved visual aesthetics. Council’s often require roofs to blend into the local environment and colours such as green, brown, red and ochre are encouraged. Many of the standard NXT Cool Zone® colours also comply with Council Planning and Building controls which often require roofs to have a SRV (Solar Reflectance Value) of less than 40%. White and light coloured roofs do not meet this requirement having SRV’s in excess of 70%.

As an example, charcoal coloured new and conventional painted roof tiles have a Total Solar Reflectance (TSR) rating of less than 7% and therefore absorb about 93% of the Sun's heat. Independent testing has shown that new charcoal coloured Boral and Monier Tiles, Dulux 962 Roof Membrane and Regent Ultra charcoal coloured roof paint have a TSR of less than 7%, which means these surfaces absorb more than 93% of the Sun’s heat. In stark contrast NXT Cool Zone® charcoal has a TSR above 35% and reflects 500% more heat than conventional roof paint or new tiles. This is not as good as NXT Cool Zone® White which has a TSR of more than 90%, but few people want a white house roof. White is excellent for a flat or low slope commercial roof, but for most people who do not want a white house roof the next best thing is NXT Cool Zone® heat reflecting roof coating with Thermal Protection Technology®. In fact, NXT Cool Zone® is better for your roof than new or replacement cement roof tiles or metal sheeting which are not available with Thermal Protection Technology®.

To demonstrate NXT Cool Zone® Heat Reflective Roof Coating technology, we painted two cement panels in the same terra cotta colour as demonstrated in the diagram below. In the diagram below the face of the panel on the left is coated with NXT Cool Zone® and the panel on the right is coated with a Competitor’s premium roof paint. The panels were placed an equal distance from an infra-red light source for several hours. A photograph was taken with a thermal imaging camera focused on the back of the coated panels.

In the photographic image below the infra-red heat signature shows the back of the standard panel radiating absorbed heat (now on the left) indicated by the glowing pink as it heats up. In stark contrast the panel now on the right coated with NXT Cool Zone® incorporating Thermal Protection Technology® remains a cool black, except for the heat halo from the infra-red heat source behind the panel. The NXT Cool Zone® panel remains 30ºC cooler because it reflects away the light energy before it can be converted to damaging heat. Independent testing has confirmed that cooling the roof surface by 30ºC will mean a temperature reduction of up to 10ºC in the rooms below.

Emmissivity of NXT Cool Zone® Not all roof surfaces cool down at night equally. Galvanised and shiny Aluminum painted surfaces have a low heat Emmissivity and therefore tend to block radiant heat transfer back to the atmosphere. Therefore superheated galvanised roof structures retain heat at night instead of cooling down. In hot climates this is why white painted steel roofs are better than exposed galvanized steel for both heat reflectance in the daytime and heat emittance in the night to maximize cooling efficiency. However once again, not everyone wants a white roof. NXT Cool Zone® emits heat back to the atmosphere as the night cools significantly better that shiny steel or Aluminium painted roofs and better than most painted surfaces as shown in the following table of typical heat Emissivity rates;

The Australian Federal Government Greenhouse, Victorian Government 5 Star, NSW Government Green Home and WA Government Energy Smart Programs are part of our national environmental policies aimed at saving our limited energy and water resources. For example, since 2005 the Victorian State Government has required all new residential buildings to meet the 5 Star Energy Rating. Existing buildings are not yet required to satisfy these standards, however the achievement of the standard is made significantly easier with NXT Cool Zone® Roof Coating. These types of controls are being introduced in many Countries as Governments implement responsible building and resource policies. NXT Cool Zone® will contribute significantly to achieve a 5 Star Energy Rating. In 2004 the California Energy Commission estimated that heat reflecting building technology could help save $USD250 million per year in air-conditioning costs in the Los Angeles region alone. They estimated that the cooling effect in turn would reduce ozone by 4% - 8% saving another $USD250 million in health related costs.

These savings are so significant that heat reflecting roof coatings are now included in the US Environment Protection Authority Energy Star program. Energy Star is a Government backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Additionally, more and more USA states and communities are including heat reflective roof requirements in building codes and incentive programs. The US Department of Energy research has shown that one additional percent of solar reflectivity in a coating, on average, will reduce roof temperature by one degree. FAQ – Frequently asked questions about NXT Cool Zone®

Can I expect the same level of savings over the entire lifetime of my roof? The heat reflecting properties of the coating will not be reduced with age. However the coating will lose some gloss after a number of years due to normal wear and tear and this will cause a gradual loss of TSR. Flat roofs may accumulate more dirt and debris because their slope is not great enough to allow sufficient washing by rain. Minimum maintenance such as washing flat roofs regularly will minimise degradation and maximizes energy savings. Consult your roofing contractor or Nutech Paint to learn more about recommended maintenance procedures. Will applying NXT Cool Zone® save me money no matter where I live? Houses in very hot and sunny climates will benefit from the greatest energy and cost savings. So, people living in NSW, Qld and WA that use more air conditioning will see greater reductions in their energy bills than people living in Tasmania for example. Where people only use their air conditioning occasionally, NXT Cool Zone® may be of marginal benefit from an energy viewpoint, however the ultra durability of the pigments and polymers will ensure superior performance and a longer lasting coating How much can a home owner be expected to save by using NXT Cool Zone®? This depends on a number of factors including; where the house is located, its orientation to the Sun, the colour selected, the local climate, the level of insulation installed, the age of the NXT and how well it is maintained and the type and colour of the roof it replaces. In general cooling energy savings can be as high as 50%. It can also reduce peak cooling demand by 10 to 15% and therefore home owners may be able to purchase smaller less expensive air conditioning systems that will run less frequently and cost less to service and replace. In the case of evaporative air conditioning significant savings of scarce water resources can be achieved. How much can a business expect to save by using NXT Cool Zone®? This will depend on the above factors however using NXT Cool Zone® White will ensure energy savings of 50% compared to a conventional flat dark coloured metal or weathered galvanised silver roof. Increase roof product life.

NXT Cool Zone® roof coatings maintain a more constant lower roof temperature and reduce thermal shock, which occurs when cool rain hits a hot roof, causing a sharp drop in temperature. During temperature changes, a roof expands and contracts, causing stress which can degrade the roof.

Why is NXT Cool Zone® good for our environment? Energy produced by burning fossil fuels increases greenhouse gas emissions and creates air pollution associated with smog, acid rain and global climate change. NXT Cool Zone® roof coatings help to reduce the production of these air pollutants. Heat reflective roof products can also help reduce the "urban heat island effect," a phenomenon in which cities can be 1 to 4.5o C warmer than the surrounding countryside. These heat islands result due to dark buildings and paved surfaces which absorb heat from the Sun. This heat is released at night causing the air temperature to remain high. The higher urban temperature leads to an increased demand for air conditioning in buildings, increased petrol use for car air conditioning, increased levels of smog, and associated increased levels of heat-related and smog-related health problems. Installing reflective roofs such as NXT Cool Zone® will help reduce the urban heat island effect, decreasing the amount of smog in the air and benefiting the environment and our entire community. What are the 5 Star House (Victorian), Green Home (NSW), Energy Smart Home (WA), 4 Star Home (SA) and Greenhouse (Federal) programs in Australia? Climate scientists claim that we need to reduce greenhouse emissions by 80% this century to maintain avoid global warming. These programs are State and Federal Government initiatives with the broad objectives of ensuring that home and building designs are environmentally sustainable by reducing greenhouse emissions, preserve natural resources, reduce energy and water usage and help home owners save money and live more comfortably. In an uninsulated house most heat is lost and gained through the ceiling and roof – 25 to 35%. These programs recognise that this is the most important part of the home to insulate. NXT Cool Zone® can reduce energy waste by up to 50% and can play a significant role in reducing greenhouse emissions and the urban heat island effect. What is a US EPA Energy Star roofing product? ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy aimed at saving money and protecting the environment through energy efficient products and practices. An Energy Star compliant heat reflective roof product can reduce the roof surface temperature by up to 55o C decreasing the amount of heat transferred into a building’s interior. Energy star qualified roof products save money and energy by reducing the amount of air conditioning needed to keep a building comfortable. Under this program the compliance requirement for steep roofs (>10 Degree slope) is a minimum 25% Total Solar Reflectance. NXT Cool Zone® has a minimum TSR of 35% and a maximum above 90% which is fully compliant with Energy Star. Is NXT Cool Zone® better than ceiling insulation? Rather than allowing the Sun to superheat the roof space, then trying to control heat transfer with ceiling insulation, it is much better to reflect heat away from the surface of the roof. The same principle applies with glass windows. NXT Cool Zone® works in a similar manner to shading your roof by reflecting the heat before it can enter the roof space. Important Application and Usage Warnings Do not apply multiple roof coats in very low temperatures or late in the day particularly on non porous substrates such as sheet metal to avoid coating adhesion problems and blistering. Each coat should be independently cured before applying subsequent coats. Do not overcoat primers or sealers until they are completely dry (Nu-Prime, Master Sealer, Nu-Bond or GP Primer). Coating in very hot conditions may reduce gloss appearance causing a patchy appearance. The use of NXT Cool Zone® Low Sheen is recommended for metal roofs to eliminate the potential for application banding resulting from gloss variations due to overspray. To maximise heat reflecting performance, standard NXT Cool Zone® Gloss is recommended. Refer to the NXT Cool Zone® Material Safety Data Sheet for all safety and user information.
