- Executive Summary " ,

, t i ,

The mission of the Heartland Green House Project is to bring about change through community outreach and by making environmental products and processes accessible to the every day consumer. The goal is

I to,build a mobile simulated environment that will creatively and attrzlctively display products that are currently available and educate consumers about their building-related purchasing choices that affect both people and nature.

A moveable display l'Green House" will be constructed that will demmstrate the practical uses of a range of recycled content building materials and sustainable technologies that are available regionally. This mobile display will be presented to large public gathecngs such as State and County Fairs, Home Shows Bnd,other high-traffic situations. The project is expected to use signage and print materials to educate and display to visitprs information on the potential access to these products, and stimulate an increase in their ,

A library of available information on suktainable techniques, their distribution networks and retail outlets will also be developed in both architect'sbinders as well as'a bobk library,

This project began in the Spring of 1997 with interest amqng ihdividuals from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and h4jssoufi;Edesi~g and construction of a mobile "Green House" within the Midwest region. In August of 1997, a,management team was orgadzed (see next heading of this report) and a feasibility

=SRA) has coordinated the project, with the assistance of Management Team members. This projei3 will alsojdentlfy and partTer with manufacturers, designers and architects who are working

' . A preliminary estimate of the cost for constiucting this display is approximately $112,629. Transportation of the exhibit is estimated at $145,000 - $161,000, with two years of project coordi#nation estimated at $50,000 - $80,000, however, these costs are expected to be reduced by seeking financial and material contributions from business and industry partners.

The bissouri State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has awarded a grant for $100,000.00 to Bridging the G h as partial fhd ing for construction costs and further development of a fundraising

- strategy. Product manufacturep and local architects, contractors and donors are also being recruited to fund the project.

A projected timeline for completion of the display is the Fall of 1999.

This price\es&ate is'for maximum costs for erection and tear down of the entire exhibit at each site. The exhibit isdesigned to be modular, so the cost'of setting up of one module would be a fractidrr of the total cost. Before final copstruction of the exhibit, it is expected that these costs will be reduced. Management Team members and technical partners will analyze the design and seek out resources to reduce 'these costs. ~

I

I

Materials will be selected and evaluked for this, project based on the following criteria Oripally outlined in Environmental by Desim, Volume I: Interiors by Kin Leclair and David Rouseau. The manufactufers will be qveyed to determine if a product fits into one of the categories Below for use in the ehbi t . If>materials are identified & questionable, the management team will have the final decision on the h e of the product.

Materids that are manufactured locally in the fowstate region will be given priority. A list will be developed of local distributors for the products that are being displayed. This information is important‘to both the manufacturers and consumers, since it assures maximum exposure for local products and give .those interested in accessing the ~

products a local contact.

The exhibit will house both an k-chtectural l i b q and a book library. n e archtectural library 1s s i w c a n t because it provides a layer of technical depth to the exhibit that will be useful to professioaal builders, architects and cralfts persons. For example a builder/arclutect visiting the exhibit can pull a binder ,to see insballation inspructions for a specific product or ident$ substitutes or products that are available. Samples have been collected for use in the design of the exhibit and will travel with the exhibit. This element allows visitors to investigate d idenbfied products and qforn&ion, whether displayed or not.

Tbe H&and Green Buildmg poject will also Pclude a library of books that support the e~vimnmental ithic. The concept for the book library is to be able to leave a duplicate library in each city that acts as a , host to th~ exhibit This could be accomplished through the fees reqdred to bring the e h b i t to a given ~ommunity which would include fun- for the library. It would also include a commitmgnt by a hast

. ! Travel Schedule ' ,

?

A firm &splay schedule is not yet possible due to the exact completion date of the constructioli of the exhibit. It appears that the exhibit can visit two state fairs per year. State fairs represent the largest exposure, and they are a primary target for the display. Since they are on a very tight schedule, however, it will be a quick turnaround, fiom pne fair to another. This remforces the need for carefid advance planning arounddl proposed &splay locations.

Other events m;are a great.opporturiky for this exhibit are Home Shows, military installations and &orts. It has also been suggested that the exhibit can be divided into modules and shown at schools and shopping centers as part of the annual rotation. State Recycling and Sdid Waste Conferences also represent unique opportunities for displaying modules and library hterials.

- . Storage: I

The exhibit can be stored in various locations throughout the region. Some pptions include military bases, fairgrounds and warehouses. The goal of the traveling exhibit is to have it visible and on display most of the time,

~ so optimum locations for down time would be sites with year-round tourist traffic.

The niilitary hk expressed interest in securing the e'xhibit while it is not travehg, however, th~s may or may not dlow the exhibit to be on display whle in storage. There may be a security issue with some of the military bases.

Traveling to mid-west malls might conveniently store the unit, while putting the exhibit on display to the pubhc: The exposure that malls would gwe this exhibit could be e?rtraordInaiy. Another location might be government offices, public buildmgs and institutions.

The hope is to keep the exhibit before the public as much as possible. It is foi this reason that the management team chose a modular contept that can be displayed as a whole orimhvidually. Ideally, storage will not be a major cost or concem and can, in fact, enhance the projest's public exposwe even inJhe off season.

1 Heartland Green Building Exposition

3 3 3 1 3

Proiect DescriDtion:

The project is an educational mobile exposition demonstrating sustainable architecture that will travel within Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Teach, inspire and influence the general public, building professionals and students about “green” building is the purpose. The mobile exposition will be presented at large public gatherings such as State and County Fairs and Home Shows. By dividing into smaller exhibits the exposition can be displayed in shopping centers, schools, and airports.

Desiqn Philosophv:

8 Sustainable Design: Innovation, beauty and meanina all a0 hand in hand with “green” architecture- By looking at the nature of materials and construction techniques we find new n

. Educate: The architecture itself will be a demonstration for learning. Information offered will range from simple to explicit including signage displays to a detailed library of products and books.

Site transition: Temporary sites for the exposition will be in the four-state region, constantly changing size shape and form.

Flexibility of Display: The exposition is designed in modular units. (The full exhibit is 2400 square feet; the smallest module is 100 square feet.)

. a

Environmental Benefits:

By exemplifying a different way of thinking about architecture that takes our role as stewards of the planet Earth, we can select from a plethora of technology and materials. The construction and display will be a billboard for environmental products. Some examples include Agriboard (structural wall panel made from straw); Environ (soybean and newspaper surfacing material); and Yemm & Hart (recycled plastic furniture). The exposition, due to its modular format, will demonstrate and reveal various construction techniques and describe the benefits of each. By using “green” materials and processes this project hopes to leave a lasting impression and add a new level of refinement to design solutions.
