One Heart. One World.
Heartbeat International Foundation
Why We Exist: At least 1,000,000 people, each year, go without a pacemaker or internal defibrillator. The result
for each is death or severe disability.
Our Mission: To save lives globally by providingcardiovascular implantable devices and treatment
to underserved populations worldwide
Results – So Far: Over 15,000 life-saving, life-improving devices have been implanted in 30 countries
since 1984
One Heart. One World.
Our Founding: The Student & Professor• 1970s - Federico Alfaro of Guatemala is a
medical student at Baylor. Dr. Henry McIntosh is his professor.
• 1977 – A young patient of Dr. Alfaro’s needlessly dies due to lack of a pacemaker. Dr. Alfaro, via his local Rotary Club, starts first “Pacemaker Bank” to prevent future tragedies.
• 1983 – Dr. McIntosh visits his former student and learns of the Pacemaker Bank program.
• 1984 – Dr. McIntosh founds HBI in Lakeland, FL
