He shared about something that I hadn’t realized had taken place. It happened while we were taking care of our niece and nephew for about 16 months. A lifetime friendship had been built between Paul and his cousins, Alex and Casey. His heart was to bring Christ to them in anyway he could throughout his life. When we took in these children they were 15 and 18 years old. Their mom had just died of ALS and my brother had lost everything. He brought them to Bill and me with only 2 small backpacks. I didn’t know how long they would be staying. I called them “children on loan from God.” My brother went into a sober living home and eventually recovered enough to take his children back. The next year Alex graduated from Troy Tech and was chosen to give a speech at the graduation. He made a reference to staying in Covina at our home as being the reason he could continue at his beloved high school. He is now attending University of Chicago on a full scholarship. Heart to Heart Substance of the Unseen

Last Sunday at Church, our son Paul had a chance to share as part of a teaching team. The theme was out-

reach. He shared about something that I hadn’t realized had taken place. It happened while we were taking care of

our niece and nephew for about 16 months. A lifetime friendship had been built between Paul and his cousins,

Alex and Casey. His heart was to bring Christ to them in anyway he could throughout his life. When we took in

these children they were 15 and 18 years old. Their mom had just died of ALS and my brother had lost everything.

He brought them to Bill and me with only 2 small backpacks. I didn’t know how long they would be staying. I

called them “children on loan from God.” My brother went into a sober living home and eventually recovered

enough to take his children back. The next year Alex graduated from Troy Tech and was chosen to give a speech at

the graduation. He made a reference to staying in Covina at our home as being the reason he could continue at his

beloved high school. He is now attending University of Chicago on a full scholarship.

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” When the

children came, I didn’t know what the future held for them. They just showed up on my doorstep (with their dog). I

looked to Jesus for help. I just began to take care of them by faith. My whole family embraced them. My two mar-

ried children invited them over to their homes and Paul shared our home. We had only seen them intermittently

throughout their lives and didn’t really know them. My brother Chris somehow knew we would care for them. He

told me later that when he and his wife had come to our house once and seen our family they commented to each

other when they left that, “maybe there is something to this Christianity.”

Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that

He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Last Sunday I was able to witness the sub-

stance of the unseen… how God works in the past, present and future of our lives. How He is faithful in all things

and why He wants us to be faithful in the small things that he calls us to do. Whether it is to cook, clean, take in a

family member, or encourage a friend. He is working in our lives and in the lives of those we love.

Keep up the great work with your children and remember that He is a rewarder to those who diligently

seek Him.

A Word to Fathers ~ By Bill Stephens

The Benefit of Peers

I met a junior high teacher at the gym. He was expressing to me some of the frustrations he experi-

enced in teaching. He said he often asked himself the question, “When did stupid ever become cool?” Some

of his students had no interest in learning. Teaching these kids correct grammar seemed pointless. These kids

had their own way of talking that was barely understandable to an adult. I could understand the frustration

this teacher was experiencing but, I also knew the answer to the problem. The answer is to take these students

out of the school setting, away from their peer group. That seems like a radical solution but I am convinced

that would have been the only solution.

The psychologist, Dr. Harold McCurdy,PhD published a study years ago that compared the childhoods

of twenty geniuses. He found three areas of commonality.

1. “A high degree of attention focused upon the child by parents and other adults expressed in intensive edu-

cational measures and abundant love.” In other words, the parents spent a lot of time reading to the child and

other creative educational endeavors.

2. Reduced contact with his/her peer group. Boys and girls who became great men and women spend their

childhood in the company of adults. McCurdy explains that “The peer group is not very wise. It emphasizes

short-term pleasure at the expense of long-term fulfillment. Adults provide a much wiser, long-term approach

to learning, as well as life in general. One caveat to this statement: You, as a homeschool parent have the

luxury to direct your child to other children that are a good match in character and intelligence.

3. A significant amount of imaginative play. Allowing your child to use his/her imagination. There are

many toys available that are made to challenge the imagination. When I was young, my parents bought me an

Erector Set which I spent hours enjoying. (One benefit of that toy—I wasn’t meant to become a structural en-

gineer.)

So in conclusion, the benefit of peers toward their spiritual and intellectual development?

Not much.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR AT RILEY'S FARM

Thursday, November 7th. For grades K – 9th. Mark your calendar for another fun adventure at Riley's Farm! You will

enjoy being in “apple country” as you participate in this historically-based field trip. This is an interactive, living history

program that focuses on the causes of the Revolutionary War. As you arrive, you'll be placed in “townships” You'll stay

with your own township throughout the day and visit a variety of village posts. After everyone has arrived and is on the

main green, the regulars will check you for contraband. If smugglers are found, they will be arrested in a brief recreation

of the “Gaspee Affair.” The excitement begins when the American minutemen attempt to come to the rescue. After the

opening skirmish, you'll be off to participate in several hands-on stations. Text books come alive as students participate

in these fun and challenging activities. After you're done with your village posts, you'll have a brief lunch. You'll be

given a soldier's ration of lemonade, cornbread, cheese, an apple and dried beef. If that's not enough, visit the Bakery,

General Store, or Hawk's Head Publick House. You can also bring your own food to supplement your ration. After

lunch, students get to participate in a mock battle, a recreation of the 1775 Battle of St. George's Tavern. Colonial

Townships will use their martial drilling training to defend the tavern behind a dry stone wall while the Redcoat Town-

ships will attempt to march on the tavern.

TIME: Please arrive and be ready to line-up in your township by 9:30 am. The program will begin at 10:00 am and

will conclude between 1:30 and 2:00 pm.

COST: $15.00 per person (ages 4 years old and up AND adults). Please note that it is not recommended that children

under age 4 participate in the field trip. If younger siblings are in attendance while the tour is in progress, they need pa-

rental supervision at all times. As an alternative, those of you with children under 4 can go apple picking while the older

kids participate in the field trip. ALSO, when you sign-up, please indicate if you would like to buy apple pies or caramel

apples (payment for these items are due when you pay for the field trip). Caramel apples are $5.00 each. For the pies,

you may choose crumb crust or double crust – please indicate which kind you want. The 3 lb. Pies are $15.00 each and

the 5 lb. Pies are $18.00 each. Please make your check payable to CCL and write in the memo area “Riley's”.

Please note, that this field trip will take place even if it is a little cold and a little drizzly – there are no refunds if you

decide to cancel because of weather. The only way our group will receive a refund is if Riley's Farm cancels the field

trip due to weather conditions.

If you are unable to pay the full admission amount you will owe by October 11th, please pay half the amount you will

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27th. For more than a decade, Operation Christmas Child has answered the

call to share the love of Jesus Christ with hurting children around the world. Since 1993, more than 85 mil-

lion gift-filled boxes have been distributed to children in more than 130 countries worldwide. The families of

WCSPSP will have the opportunity to help this wonderful ministry in a few ways. First, families can fill a

shoe box for a child in another country. The WCSPSP high school ASB will have times set up to collect

these boxes. Second, for the past several years, volunteers from WCSPSP have gone to the processing ware-

house in Orange County to help pack the filled boxes for shipping to other countries. This year, this ASB-

sponsored event will take place on November 27th from 10:00 am to

DISNEY YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM

We are looking into the possibility of setting up a field trip to do a Disney Youth Education Series program at Disneyland.

Because it would be a more expensive field trip and it would require at least 10 participants, we want to see who would be

interested in attending. The programs we are thinking about are called Exploring the Golden State (3rd - 5th grade) and Prop-

erties of Motion Physics Lab (6th - 12th grade). A brief overview of each program: 1) Exploring the Golden State – Stu-

dents in grades 3-5 act as early settlers as they travel through Disney California Adventure Park to explore the four regions of

California; Native Americans, the Gold Rush and California Missions. During this 2.5-hour program students will learn about

the state's rich history including the influential events and people that shaped the Golden State including Chuck Yeager, Ame-

lia Earhart, Howard Hugh, John Muir and Walt Disney. They will also be inspired as they learn of the obstacles early Califor-

nians overcame to fulfill their dreams. 2) Properties of Motion Physics Lab – During this 3-hour interactive learning experi-

ence, students in grades 6-12 will learn the role of mechanical physics at Disney California Adventure Park. Students will

study Newton's Laws of Motion and use the scientific method to explore the practical uses of magnetism, friction, gravity and

different forms of energy. With the Park as their learning lab, students will use hands-on experiments to see and test the rela-

tionship between physics and their favorite Disney attractions. Both programs cost $37.00 for the Disney Youth Education

Series Experience Only Ticket. Each programs needs to have a minimum of 10 kids. For the first 10 kids, two chaperones

(parents) are allowed, and for every 10 kids thereafter, one chaperone is allowed (so if we had 30 kids attend a program, then 3

chaperones could attend that one program). No more than the allowed number of chaperones can attend (so most parents

would not be permitted to attend the program). If we have enough interest, we are thinking of setting this up sometime be-

tween February and May 2014.

Please contact Denise at [email protected], 909-949-7057 or sign-up at Park Day or one of the school sites by Friday,

September 20th if you are interested in having your child/children attend one of these programs. Please include grade level.

to be bigger and better than ever! Join us for a first act of superior choral music guaranteed to delight your ears as it warms

your heart. Next, hold on to your seats as we journey to a land filled to the brim with your favorite fairy tale characters such

as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Pinocchio. As always, there's a musical finale that will send you from the theatre with

toes tapping and spirits tingling! PLEASE NOTE... SIGN-UPS WILL TAKE PLACE IN AUGUST, SEPTEMBER AND

EARLY OCTOBER AND PAYMENT WILL BE DUE BY MID-OCTOBER.

TIME: The performance begins at 10:00 am (the show is about 1 hr. and 10 min. in length). HOWEVER, it is first come,

first seating AND the whole group needs to be there in order to be seated. So we will need to arrive early and be at the en-

trance of the Haugh Center by 8:30 am. More details will go out to the attending families closer to the performance date.

COST: $9.00 per person (kids – including babies - AND adults)

COORDINATOR: Please RSVP to Denise Kross at [email protected], 909-949-7057, or sign-up at Park Days and

NEW TEACHER/CLASS INTRODUCTION!

Hello my name is Susanne Jackson and I am a certified Sign Language Interpreter. I have spent the last 20 years interpreting in the

field of education. From Elementary School and Junior High School to the last 12 years at the College level. This also includes inter-

preting church services and worship. I am also a wife of 19 years to my wonderful husband and a mother of four fabulous children

ages junior high to a toddler.

I absolutely love working with students and I'm excited to teach your child the beautiful language of American Sign Language

(ASL). My goal is to take students with little or no knowledge of ASL and Deaf Culture and provide them with the skills needed to

communicate comfortably in the deaf community. We will accomplish this by forming a language community and by creating an

interactive classroom environment.

Introduction to American Sign Language (Junior High Course):

American Sign Language(ASL) is a visually active language. This will be a creative, fun and

exciting exploration of basic signs used in everyday interactions and special occasions. Our topics

will included beginner conversational skills, religious signs through scripture and worship, story telling,

games and more. This class will build vocabulary and prepare students for future ASL classes. Students will need

to bring a spiral notebook. There will be quizzes and a final project incorporating what the students have learned in class.

CONSUMER MATH (Grades 11-12)

Text: Consumer Math (2nd edition) BJU Press softback ISBN# 1-57924-892-6

(2005 publish date) teacher's ISBN# 1-57924-893-4

This is a full year, high school level course - a God-centered, Scripturally-based approach to stewardship, and the finan-

cial transactions that are encountered in every-day grown-up real life. Based on the five essential principles for the con-

sumer: 1) plan ahead 2) shop for bargains 3) maintain the value of your belongings 4) know when to borrow, and 5)

keep accurate financial records.

Will cover such things as income and tax deductions, budgeting, personal banking, borrowing money, transportation

costs/investments ( buying and maintaining a car), food costs and budgeting strategies, clothing costs and budgeting

strategies, housing costs and budgeting (including home purchases and maintenance), life and health insurance, income

taxes (including completion of the basic tax forms), and vacation planning. (whew!)

These are BASIC LIFE SKILLS that everyone needs, and few, at this time in their life (or ever) are given adequate in-

struction on! Students will learn concepts in class, then complete daily assignments at home. Unit tests will be sent

home, to be administered by a parent or instructor, and brought back to the next class session. TEACHER’S EDITION

REQUIRED -- Parent(s) welcome and encouraged, but not required, to accompany students to class, in order to support

study during the week (or to learn alongside their student!). Parents or students will correct the daily work.

Math concepts will be basic, but there’s quite a bit of it!! -- at least completion of a Pre-Algebra class would be

wise. Ratios, Percentages, basic equation solving, and measurements (including conversions) will be COVERED, but a

basic knowledge would be good . . . This is a great math option for the student who is NOT strong in math skills, but

needs to get the required classes in for graduation, as WELL as being a terrific life-skills course for ANYONE, includ-

ing the mathematically gifted :-) Recommended for students who are seniors, especially before they “head out into the

world”.

**a placement exam must be completed prior to enrollment - call or e-mail ASAP**

This is a full year, high school level course - STUDENT MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ALGEBRA I

PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT - I do recommend, for most, that students take Alg 2 the year immediately following Alg 1,

if they are intending to do BOTH classes - Alg 2 content relies HEAVILY on Alg 1 content!!.

This is a presentation of Algebra as an exercise in stewardship of creation, developing thinking skills and Christ-

likeness . . . wow! Chapter 1 dives right into factoring polynomials, binomials, and trinomials, assuming a pretty strong

mastery. Text moves through linear equations and inequalities, linear relations, quadratic equations and functions,

graphing, linear programming, radicals and exponential functions and equations, imaginary and other complex numbers,

rational expressions and equations, trigonometry, and matrix algebra. Students will learn concepts in class, then com-

plete daily assignments at home. Daily homework assignments will be corrected by student or parent. Unit tests will be

sent home, to be administered by a parent or instructor, and brought back to the next class session. TEACHER’S EDI-

TION REQUIRED -- Parent(s) welcome and encouraged, but not required, to accompany students to class, in order to

support study during the week. The subject matter here is complex - TOO complex for a once a week class. It will be

TWO (2) days per week, though there may be a FEW Friday classes that we DON’T hold (due to holiday schedules,

etc).

Materials: 3-ring binder and paper, ruler (inches and cm), and a scientific calculator. (graphing calculator NOT neces-

This is a full year course. Will cover skills required to proceed into High School Algebra, and students completing it will be WELL PRE-

PARED for Algebra 1.

**I get asked often, which math should my Jr Higher be doing?” If your student does a decent job (80% average) on basic mathematics,

especially multiplication & division, and maybe ok on fractions, he/she should take Pre-Algebra. The current “fashionable” trend in educa-

tion these days (public and private) is that students should take Algebra I in 8th grade, which would mean Pre-Alg in 7th. This works for

some, and is (in my opinion) a GRAVE mistake for a lot of others! According to Bob Jones, this is an 8th grade curriculum.

This class is available, as well, to High School students who require additional work on the basics!

Call me if you need to talk about any of this!

Starts right out working with equations, covering properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Will move into decimals,

integers, multiples, factors, fractions, equations and inequalities, ratio, proportion, percentages, geometry and graphing. Emphasis through

entire text is on equations and solving them, using all the mathematical concepts introduced. These basic skills would be prerequisite for an

Algebra course. Students will learn concepts in class, then complete daily assignments at home. Daily homework to be corrected by parent

and/or student. Tests will be sent home, to be administered by a parent or homeschooling teacher, and brought back to the next class ses-

Modern World History In Modern World History we will not only be studying historical events, we will also be studying the meaning

of the world’s history. As Christians we believe we are all on a journey to the end of time. The Christian histo-

As believers in Christ we acknowledge that God is active and at work in the world and in history. We also be-

day, and how they relate to our salvation. In order to really understand history and our place in it, we will pay

special attention to the philosophy and theology that go along with that history. In order to explore the root of

things that happen, the Christian historian must include philosophy and theology in his study. If he does not,
