In 1965, John and Jan Gillespie were joined by Green Bay Packers Quarterback Bart Starr and his wife, Cherry to build Rawhide from a dream. Located outside of New London, Wisconsin, Rawhide Boys Ranch emphasizes a faith-based residential environment as an alternative to juvenile corrections for court-referred and privately placed at-risk young men. In addition, Rawhide provides services to youth and their families through community-based programs, such as outpatient counseling, adventure based summer camps and intensive family weekends.

Rawhide is proud to continue our legacy of serving youth and helping them get on the right track to a brighter future. Over the years, Rawhide has helped transform the lives of thousands of youth. A study done by Dr. Frank Cummings, a Clinical Psychologist, documented Rawhide success rate at 73% for producing sustained positive outcomes in the lives of court-referred youth six months after discharge. Rawhide’s success rate is even more impressive when you realize the type of trauma that some of our youth have had to endure. Physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and violence are just some of the issues that Rawhide helps to heal.

I am excited to share that in response to overwhelming evidence, and a desire to help more youth, Rawhide is currently developing a new initiative to provide comprehensive trauma informed care at our residential facility. Healing from trauma can be a complicated process but recent research has made huge breakthroughs. For example, evidence shows that childhood trauma, can lead to behavioral issues and even physical health problems later in life. Rawhide’s groundbreaking Trauma Sensory Program will use occupational therapy to help heal past trauma and

improve social and intellectual functioning. This is an innovative and proven strategy that puts Rawhide at the forefront of providing state of the art care for youth.

In these challenging times we deal with more and more trauma induced mental health issues, addictions and severe environmental dysfunction. We continuously evaluate and address the ever-changing needs of the youth and families we serve by staying up to date on best practices and providing the love and support that ultimately fosters change. Rawhide’s desire to improve services and impact lives has led to the development of a highly successful continuum of care. Over the past 52 years Rawhide has grown from one boys home into a campus that includes, seven boys homes, an accredited private high school, an outpatient mental health clinic and numerous job training facilities. Rawhide also provides outpatient counseling services in Appleton, Green Bay, Milwaukee, West Bend and New London.

Exciting things are in store for the future of Rawhide! As we look forward we are excited to build upon our mission; being dependent on God, we inspire and equip at-risk youth and families to lead healthy and responsible lives through family-centered care, treatment and education. In late 2017, we will be welcoming a new Executive Director to Rawhide, developing new programs and collaborating with other agencies to bring about change in the lives of the youth and families we serve.

In order to have a thriving community we need to collaborate between all sectors – private businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations. The Fox Cities continues to thrive because we have organizations like the Heart of the Valley Chamber that bring people together from across specialties and sectors in a fun and relaxed environment. - Contributed by: Amanda Moore

14 Connecting People – Promoting Business

Chances are the lines are blurring between your desk phone and your smartphone. As more workers go mobile at least part of the time, it’s a good idea to optimize your communica-tion for success on mobile devices.

Add an address to your meeting request – when you send a meeting request to a prospect, customer or colleague, take the extra second to add in the physical address to the location line. This allows their smartphone to notify them when they should leave for the meeting and lets the user easily tap for directions or get traffic information with their Waze app.

Use dashes in your phone number – when a phone number is formatted with dashes, smartphones will highlight the number and make a phone call a tap away. Phone numbers embedded in images, using non-standard fonts, or formatted with periods between the numbers will not work as smooth.

Avoid emojis – Emojis that are commonplace in texting

and messaging don’t always translate to desktop email. Conversely, emoticons, created using combinations of symbols on your desktop computer, don’t show up as intended on mobile devices. With emails being cross-platform in many business situations, it’s best to leave these icons out if you don’t know where the recipient will be reading the message.

Edit your email signature – Custom signatures are standard when sending email from a desktop, but most default to the supplied message on a mobile phone, which doesn’t include your name or contact information. You can edit the signature in your settings menu. For iOS go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar and scroll down to signature. For Android, it can vary depending on your device, but if you go into your mail app, tap the menu button and then settings, you’ll see your signature – simply tap to edit.
